How much of each exam is chemistry, and what scores?

What should a Salem State Board student look for in +1 and +2 chemistry?

On its website the Directorate of Government Examinations, Tamil Nadu, gives the Higher Secondary years two separate examination sections, HSC (+1) and HSC (+2), and lists the Higher Secondary Examination with March/June sessions. So the building blocks of chemistry, moles, bonding and the first organic chapters, belong to a year that is examined on its own. The Directorate also decides and revises the paper design, which is why we leave it out and point you to dge.tn.gov.in.

Three questions sort out the right tutor. Do they teach from the state book, in Tamil or English as your child writes? Will the practical record grow steadily rather than in a last-minute burst? Where does CBSE put the Class 12 chemistry marks?

Unusually, CBSE fixes the marks for every chapter, which turns planning into simple arithmetic. The 2026-27 curriculum keeps last session's paper design. Taking the ten theory chapters from heaviest to lightest:

• 9 marks: Electrochemistry, the single largest chapter, worth numericals every week.
• 8 marks: Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, the centre of most conversion questions.
• 7 marks each: Solutions, Chemical Kinetics, Biomolecules, the d- and f-Block Elements, and Coordination Compounds.
• 6 marks each: Haloalkanes and Haloarenes; Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers; Amines.

Added up by branch, organic chemistry holds 33, physical 23 and inorganic 14, so organic deserves the largest share of the weeks. Five sections make up the paper, a handful of questions offer an internal choice, and calculators and log tables are both banned. Around two-fifths of the marks check recall and understanding; the other three-fifths ask for application, analysis or evaluation. Which topics has CBSE removed, and can an entrance student skip them?

Two pieces are gone from the 2026-27 Class 12 syllabus: the solid state, and Groups 15 to 18 of the p-block. Four others are still taught but marked only within school: surface chemistry, polymers, chemistry in everyday life, and the extraction of elements from ores.

Treat that as a board decision only. NTA issues the NEET and JEE syllabi separately, and a chapter the board has set aside, such as parts of the p-block, may still be tested. Before notes go into a cupboard, compare them with the official entrance syllabus.

How should a home tutor handle the three branches each week?

Keep pace with whatever chapter school or the entrance class is teaching, and give each branch the personal attention a crowded room cannot.

Physical: watch the pen

Most students know the formula for a solutions, kinetics or electrochemistry problem. Marks vanish on units, signs and powers of ten, which a tutor catches only by watching a problem being solved.

Organic: draw the routes

Build one page that links the functional groups in the book, redraw it from memory every week, and check it against NCERT. A conversion question then becomes a route to trace, not a list to recall.

Inorganic: say it exactly

Medical entrance favours the textbook's own sentence. Brief quizzes lifted from NCERT, with a reason asked for every trend, build that exactness.

Finish every lesson with two short "give reasons" questions in board style, marked on the spot, so the written paper does not fall behind the objective practice.

Can the CBSE chemistry practical be prepared away from the lab?

Largely, yes. Of the 30 marks, titration and salt analysis bring 8 apiece, an experiment based on the theory 6, the project 4, and the record together with the viva 4. This year's titration is potassium permanganate against oxalic acid or Mohr's salt (ferrous ammonium sulphate), and every student must weigh and prepare the standard solution alone.

The burette and chemicals stay at school; the thinking does not. At home a tutor can practise the molarity calculation from a weighed mass, a clean table of burette readings that ends in the result, salt analysis in its proper sequence, a project small enough to finish honestly, and viva questions such as why permanganate acts as its own indicator.

Close to the New Bus Stand

Tutors from many directions can find Swarnapuri, a compact neighbourhood by the New Bus Stand and Omalur Main Road, but its lanes sit tightly together, so the door number and cross street matter more than a general landmark. Next to Fairlands, Meyyanur is easiest with a location link and the lane name, which spares the tutor a search along a main road kept busy by shops and offices.

North Salem

One of the corporation's four zones takes its name from Hasthampatti. Its main roads fill in office hours while the streets behind stay quiet, so weekday lessons after office time, or a longer one on Saturday, keep steady. In Chinna Thirupathi, near Kannankurichi Main Road, tell the tutor which side of the main road your street is on, as some lanes look much the same.

West Salem

Suramangalam covers both the old part and the streets by Salem Junction on Junction Main Road, so say which. In Narasothipatti, near Mamangam and Azad Nagar, a few streets branch off one another and are easy to miss after dark; send a location link first.

ISC, IB or IGCSE chemistry: can you find a tutor in Salem?

• ISC: theory is examined with practical and project work, and CISCE answers usually need fuller explanation than one sentence.
• IB Diploma: studied at SL or HL, with the content grouped under structure and reactivity. The investigation must be the student's own; a tutor can ask questions about it but should not shape it.

Why fix chemistry in Class 11 rather than Class 12?

Class 12 chemistry stands on Class 11. Moles come back in every solutions problem, equilibrium returns in electrochemistry, and the opening organic ideas return in each conversion. For a State Board student the +1 year is also examined in its own section, so a shaky start costs marks twice: in the first year, and again in Class 12 and entrance mocks.
