Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Two children on the same Bengaluru street can be sitting completely different English papers. One is preparing for the Karnataka SSLC, another for CBSE Class 10, a third for ICSE, and a fourth has just joined an IGCSE or IB programme after the family moved for work. Each paper rewards something different, so the first job is matching the tutor to the paper, and the second is finding someone who can reach your neighbourhood at the hour you need. This page covers both. For a fuller account of every board, read our national English home tutor guide.
Bengaluru has the Karnataka state board, CBSE, CISCE's ICSE and ISC, and IB and Cambridge IGCSE schools as well. The table sets out what each one asks of a student in English and what that means for the tutor you pick.
| Board | How English is examined | Ask the tutor about |
|---|---|---|
| Karnataka SSLC and PUC | The state board sets its own textbooks and its own English paper for Class 10 and for the two PUC years | Recent experience with state textbooks and the board's model papers |
| CBSE Class 10 | An 80-mark paper: reading 20, writing and grammar 20, literature 40 from First Flight and Footprints without Feet; the school adds 20 | How they teach the letter and the analytical paragraph |
| CBSE Class 12 | English Core out of 80: reading 22, creative writing 18, literature 40; internal 20 covers listening, speaking and a project | Literature answers that link themes across chapters |
| ICSE | Two papers, language and literature, each two hours and 80 marks, each with 20 marks of internal assessment | Timed compositions of 300 to 350 words |
| ISC | Two three-hour papers of 80 marks, plus 20 marks of project work in each | The 400 to 450 word composition and proposal writing |
| IGCSE and IB | Cambridge First Language (0500) or Second Language (0510); IB Language A with unseen analysis, a comparative essay and an oral | Which syllabus they have taught, by code |
Many Bengaluru children are on the Karnataka state board, which holds the SSLC at the end of Class 10 and the pre-university course across Classes 11 and 12. We describe this board only in general terms, because the scheme and dates come from the board's own notices each year and those are what a tutor should work from.
In practice, a good state-board English tutor does three things. They teach from the prescribed state textbooks rather than a CBSE guide, so lessons follow the chapters your child is tested on in school. They practise the kinds of writing the board's papers ask for, using the board's model papers. And they build the habits every English paper rewards: reading an unseen passage carefully, planning before writing and checking grammar in the last few minutes. When you ask, tell us whether English is your child's first or second language at school, so we match the right level.
Families who relocate to Bengaluru for work, often into the eastern and south-eastern tech belts, meet a particular English problem. The child may have moved from a state board elsewhere to CBSE, from CBSE to an IGCSE school, or into an English-medium classroom for the first time. The gap is rarely vocabulary alone. It is usually that the new school expects longer, more independent writing and far more reading.
For the first term after a move, one extra reading-and-writing session a week often does more than a long list of grammar worksheets.
Senior students in Bengaluru often push English aside for science or commerce subjects and entrance preparation, and then find that it pulls their board percentage down. The fix does not need many hours. One focused session a week, with a piece of writing marked each time, keeps English steady.
For CBSE Class 12, grammar leaves the paper, so creative writing and literature carry the marks; the prescribed books are Flamingo and Vistas. For ISC, the language paper asks for a composition from six topics, directed writing, a proposal, grammar and comprehension, and the literature paper covers drama, stories and poetry, including a poem's style. Our guide to ISC Class 12 English goes into both papers. PUC students should ask a tutor to work from the state textbooks and past board papers in the same steady way.
English suits a weekly rhythm, so the slot has to survive Bengaluru traffic every week, not just once. The metro has changed which tutors can reach which homes. Here is how it works zone by zone, with one neighbourhood in six of them as an example.
| Zone | How tutors usually arrive | Slot advice |
|---|---|---|
| Koramangala, HSR and Bellandur (e.g. Koramangala) | Yellow Line to Central Silk Board for the Koramangala and HSR side; Bellandur by road, as its Blue Line stations are not open | Pick a tutor from your side of the Outer Ring Road |
| Jayanagar, JP Nagar and Banashankari (e.g. Banashankari) | Green Line to the nearest station, then a walk or short auto | Give the stage or phase with cross and main numbers |
| BTM, Bannerghatta Road and Electronic City | Yellow Line along Hosur Road; Bannerghatta Road still by road until its Pink Line section opens | Keep lessons clear of office shift changes |
| Indiranagar and Old Airport Road | Purple Line to Indiranagar; bus to the Domlur terminus | Start before the 100 Feet Road evening crowd |
| Whitefield, Marathahalli and KR Puram (e.g. Whitefield) | Purple Line through to Whitefield (Kadugodi), then an auto; Marathahalli has no station yet | Share tutor details with the society desk before the demo |
| Hennur, Kalyan Nagar and Banaswadi (e.g. HRBR Layout) | No metro yet; bus, two-wheeler or cab | A tutor already living nearby keeps weekday lessons regular |
| Hebbal, RT Nagar and Yelahanka | By road; Blue Line stations here are under construction | Stay on your side of the Hebbal flyover |
| Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar and Yeshwanthpur (e.g. Malleshwaram) | Green Line, with most homes a short walk or auto from a station | A slightly earlier slot, before the market roads fill |
| Vijayanagar, RR Nagar and Kengeri | Purple Line west to Vijayanagar, RR Nagar or Kengeri | Avoid Mysore Road at rush hour |
| Frazer Town, Richmond Town and Ulsoor (e.g. Richmond Town) | Purple Line to Halasuru or Trinity for Ulsoor; Frazer Town by road or metro and auto | Afternoon or early evening, before the shopping streets fill |
Every zone and area is listed on our Bengaluru home tuition page, which also explains how we look for tutors nearby first and online tutors last.
English moves online more easily than most subjects once a child is past early reading. Essays can be written in a shared document and marked before the next lesson, and online widens the choice for IB, IGCSE and ISC, where specialists are fewer. Home lessons remain the better choice for a child still learning to read, for one who drifts on screen, and wherever a reliable tutor lives within easy reach. For a home on the far side of the Outer Ring Road from the tutor, a mix often works: one home lesson, plus one online session on a busy weekday.
Bring a recent marked school paper or a piece of writing, and check the following during the class:
Our demo class checklist for parents covers the practical side. If the fit is wrong, we set up a demo with the next tutor on your shortlist.

Yes, NXTutors finds English tutors in Bengaluru for the Karnataka SSLC and PUC on request. Tell us the class and whether English is your child's first or second language at school. The tutor should teach from the state textbooks, practise with the board's model papers, and take pattern details from official notices.
CBSE Class 10 English for Bengaluru students in 2026-27 is an 80-mark board paper: reading 20, writing and grammar 20, and literature 40 from First Flight and Footprints without Feet. The school adds 20 internal marks, including listening and speaking. Literature is half the paper, so structured answers with close reference matter.
CBSE Class 12 English Core for Bengaluru students is out of 80: reading 22, creative writing 18 and literature 40, from Flamingo and Vistas. Internal marks of 20 cover listening, speaking and a project. Grammar leaves the paper, so a tutor should train creative writing and literature answers that link themes across chapters.
ICSE English for Bengaluru students is two papers, language and literature, each two hours and 80 marks with 20 internal marks. ISC has two three-hour, 80-mark papers plus 20 marks of project work each. ICSE compositions run 300 to 350 words and ISC 400 to 450, so weekly timed writing matters.
An English tutor for a child new to a Bengaluru IGCSE school should start by confirming the entry: First Language English 0500 or English as a Second Language 0510. The first rewards analysis of a writer's language and extended writing; the second tests reading, writing and listening. Then diagnose from recent schoolwork.
IB Language A asks a Bengaluru student for guided analysis of unseen non-literary texts, a comparative essay on two literary works and a 15-minute oral. Specialists are fewer, so online lessons widen the choice. A tutor may coach the oral and explain criteria, but must not write any coursework.
One focused English session a week is enough for most PUC or Class 12 students in Bengaluru, provided a piece of writing is set and marked each time. Before board exams, add a timed paper every week or two. English rarely needs long hours; it needs steady feedback on real writing.
Online English tuition suits most Bengaluru students past early reading, because essays go into a shared document and come back marked, and IB, IGCSE and ISC specialists become reachable. Home lessons suit children still learning to read or who drift on screen. Across the Outer Ring Road, one home and one online session works.
In a free English demo in Bengaluru, check that the tutor reads your child's writing before teaching and can name the tasks on your child's paper. Your child should write or speak for much of the hour, corrections should focus on two or three priorities, and you should get a month's plan with a timed piece.
Tell us the class, board and your area. We share two or three matched tutors, and the first class is a free demo.
