Class 10 home tutors in Bengaluru: the SSLC first, then CBSE, ICSE and IGCSE

For a Karnataka state board student, Class 10 ends with the SSLC, and the result decides the next step into a pre-university college and a combination of subjects. A neighbour on CBSE or ICSE faces a different board paper, and an IGCSE student a different exam series again. The chapters overlap; the papers, marking and calendars do not. This guide is by our two Class 10 authors: Abhinandan Tiwary covers maths for CBSE and ICSE students, and Aaditya Kashyap covers science on the same two boards. Between them they explain what each route demands, which subjects repay a tutor, how to lay out the year and the week, how tutors travel to each part of Bengaluru, and what to test in the free demo.

What does the SSLC year involve?

The SSLC is conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, a Government of Karnataka body. The same board runs the II PUC examination two years later. Its 2026 notices refer to SSLC Examination 1 and Examination 2, and its website carries separate registration for repeater and private candidates. Subject patterns, marks and the 2027 timetable should be taken only from the board's own circulars on kseab.karnataka.gov.in, not from older guidebooks or forwarded messages.

For a tutor, the SSLC means a few practical things:

  • The state textbook is the base. Every exercise in it should be done, in the student's medium, before any extra material.
  • Past and model papers matter. Practise in the board's own format, and check each year whether anything has changed.
  • Answers must be complete. Steps in maths, labelled diagrams in science and well-organised long answers in social science all earn marks.
  • Plan beyond the exam. The result feeds into the choice of PU college and combination, so a realistic target should be set early in the year.

Our Karnataka board tutors in Bengaluru page covers the state board from the SSLC through to the PUC.

How do CBSE, ICSE and IGCSE compare in Class 10?

Class 10 outside the state board, at a glance
BoardHow the marks are made upDecisions and exam sittingsWhere students lose marks
CBSEFor the main subjects, the board paper carries 80 and internal assessment 20; a student needs 33% in each subject; roughly half of each paper tests competencies rather than recallChoose Mathematics Standard or Basic. Since 2026 there are two board exams: the main one, which everyone sits, and an optional later one for raising marks in a maximum of three subjects. CBSE had not yet published the 2027 datesUnfamiliar case-based questions, and pacing
ICSEIn maths, one three-hour written paper worth 80, with the other 20 coming from internal work assessed by the school teacher and an outside examinerA broad syllabus in every subject; school preliminaries set the rhythm of the final monthsSteps left out, and long answers that are too thin
Cambridge IGCSE maths (0580)All marks come from Cambridge's own papersTwo tiers: Core, graded C to G, and Extended, graded A* to E. Indian centres have a March sitting besides June and NovemberEntering at a tier that does not match the student

Which Class 10 subjects repay a tutor most?

  • Maths: cumulative, and unforgiving of missing steps. Worth a tutor if Class 9 algebra or geometry is shaky, or if marks disappear in the working. See maths home tutors in Bengaluru and the Class 10 maths preparation guide.
  • Science: three subjects in one, each with its own trap: numericals in physics, balanced equations in chemistry, diagrams and terms in biology. See science home tutors in Bengaluru and our Class 10 science notes.
  • English: writing formats and literature answers; a handful of focused sessions is often enough.
  • Social science: mostly a reading, note-making and map routine the student can run alone.
  • Kannada, Hindi or another language paper: easy to leave until the end, and costly when that happens; keep a weekly slot for it.

Where maths and science are both only a little behind, a single tutor can carry the two. A subject that is badly behind, or a student chasing a very high score, justifies a separate specialist.

What does a well-run Class 10 year look like in Bengaluru?

The calendars differ: CBSE schools open the session in April, the Karnataka board publishes its own SSLC timetable every year, and IGCSE runs to whichever series the school enters. The shape of a good year does not change much, though:

  1. Start of term: get the subject-wise syllabus and the latest pattern, test the Class 9 basics each subject needs, and move a chapter ahead of the class.
  2. Mid-year: a short test each week on what is finished, every wrong answer logged with its correction, and an agreed switch to online when the roads or the weather make a visit unrealistic.
  3. Finishing the syllabus: no chapter left untouched, all project, practical and internal work handed in, and the first timed papers in one subject at a time.
  4. Preliminaries: whole papers, timed, then checked line by line against the marking scheme or model answers.
  5. The run-in: revision driven by the error log and the official exam timetable, with nothing new introduced.

The earlier the tutor joins, the more there is to work with. Joining once the preliminaries are over still helps with exam technique and timing, but foundations take months to rebuild, not weeks.

Fitting a tutor into a crowded Class 10 week

School, a bus or van ride through slow roads, possibly a coaching batch, then homework: the board-year week in Bengaluru is full before a tutor is added. Draw up the whole week on one sheet, journeys included, and look for these things before agreeing a slot:

  • A daily block of independent study that nothing else is allowed to take, because solving alone is what lifts scores.
  • Tutor visits on the days with no coaching, so your child does one commute in the evening, not two.
  • Tuition that follows the school's chapter of the week, practised in the board's answer style.
  • One free evening, and proper sleep, especially once the preliminary papers begin.

Which route will the tutor take to your zone?

Should Class 10 tuition be at home or online?

Sitting beside the student is the surest way to catch a slip in a long maths solution or a physics numerical, so home visits suit those subjects well. Going online brings in tutors from the far side of the ORR, useful when you need an ICSE or IGCSE specialist, and spares everyone a weekday drive in peak traffic. For any written subject taught on screen, insist that the notebook is visible while your child writes, by tablet, shared board or a phone camera angled down at the page. Plenty of families settle on a weekend visit plus one online evening. Our online tutoring for Bengaluru students page covers the setup.

How do you test a tutor in the Class 10 demo?

You pay nothing for the first lesson with the tutor you pick, so treat it as an interview about the exam:

  1. Exam knowledge. SSLC: how do they keep up with the board's current pattern? CBSE: how do the 20 internal marks and the optional second exam affect planning? IGCSE: which tier, and why?
  2. Diagnosis. Give them your child's last test paper and ask which errors cost the most marks.
  3. Marking. See whether they go through the method line by line or just tick the answer.
  4. Teaching, not solving. Choose a textbook question your child has not met and watch how the tutor leads them to it.
  5. A timeline. Ask when the first full-length papers will be set.

Not convinced? The next name on your shortlist gives a demo of their own, and moving to a different tutor later costs nothing. Every tutor who joins passes an ID check before the profile is marked Verified. The parents' demo checklist suggests further questions.

What does a Class 10 home tutor cost in Bengaluru?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For a board-year student, expect the quote to reflect how many subjects are covered, which board it is, how much board-year teaching the tutor has done, how far they travel at your time and how often they come. Every tutor fixes their own rate, and it is on the shortlist before you book a demo. Budgeting help is in the pricing guide and our article on Bengaluru tuition fees.

Localities where we match Class 10 tutors

Along Kanakapura Road, the Green Line extension lets tutors from Jayanagar or Banashankari ride in and walk the last stretch; most newer homes are in gated societies, so register the tutor at the gate. Yeshwanthpur ranges from older houses to apartment complexes, and the metro station facing the railway junction makes the trip simple. KR Puram is reached directly on the Purple Line, though the walk from the station crosses a busy junction at office hours.

BTM Layout has had its own Yellow Line station since August 2025. Richmond Town buildings often have a guard, so share the tutor's details at the gate. And in Hebbal, a tutor living on your side of the flyover is the dependable choice for weekday evenings.

The year before is covered by our Class 9 page, and the step into first PUC or Class 11 by Class 11 home tutors in Bengaluru. Send us the board, the subjects, the medium of instruction, your layout and stage, and the weekdays that are free. Two or three suitable tutors come back to you, each with a fee. Class 10 Home Tutor in Bengaluru: common questions

For Class 10 in Bengaluru, subjects, board, the tutor's board-year experience, travel at your time and frequency set the quote.

How do I find a Class 10 home tutor in Bengaluru?

To find a Class 10 home tutor in Bengaluru, send the board, subjects, medium of instruction, your layout and stage, and free weekdays. We return two or three matched tutors, each fee shown before the first class. The first lesson is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.

Who conducts the SSLC exam for Class 10 students in Bengaluru?

The SSLC exam for Bengaluru Class 10 state-board students is conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, a Government of Karnataka body that also runs II PUC. Its 2026 notices refer to SSLC Examination 1 and Examination 2. Take patterns and timetables only from kseab.karnataka.gov.in.

What should an SSLC home tutor in Bengaluru focus on?

An SSLC home tutor in Bengaluru should focus on every exercise in the state textbook in your child's medium, then the board's own paper format. Answers need steps in maths, labelled diagrams in science and organised long answers in social science. Set a realistic target early, since the result shapes the PU college and combination.

What does the optional second CBSE Class 10 exam mean for a Bengaluru board-year plan?

For a Bengaluru board-year plan, the CBSE main Class 10 exam is compulsory, and an optional later exam lets students raise marks in up to three subjects. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing, so check cbse.gov.in. In main subjects the board paper carries 80 and internal assessment 20.

How do CBSE, ICSE and IGCSE compare for Class 10 in Bengaluru?

Class 10 in Bengaluru is marked differently on CBSE, ICSE and IGCSE, so the tutor must know your child's papers. CBSE main subjects are 80 board plus 20 internal, ICSE maths is one three-hour 80-mark paper plus 20 internal, and IGCSE maths 0580 comes wholly from Cambridge papers at Core or Extended. For a wider comparison, see our CBSE, ICSE, IB or IGCSE guide.

Can one Bengaluru tutor teach Class 10 maths and science together?

One Bengaluru tutor can teach Class 10 maths and science together if both are only slightly behind and the tutor is strong in each. When one subject is badly behind, or the target score is very high, a separate specialist is the better use of money. Ask for one chapter from each subject in the demo.

When should a Class 10 student in Bengaluru start with a tutor?

A Bengaluru Class 10 student should start with a tutor in the opening weeks of the school year. That leaves time to close Class 9 gaps and build a weekly test habit. A tutor who joins after the preliminaries can sharpen technique and timing, but foundations take months to rebuild, not weeks.

How can a busy Bengaluru Class 10 week fit in a tutor?

A busy Bengaluru Class 10 week fits a tutor most easily on days without coaching, so your child does one evening commute, not two. Draw the whole week on one sheet, journeys included. Protect a daily block of independent study, follow the school's chapter of the week, and keep one free evening and proper sleep.

Is home or online Class 10 tuition better in Bengaluru?

Home Class 10 tuition in Bengaluru suits long maths solutions and physics numericals, where sitting beside the student catches slips. Online brings ICSE or IGCSE specialists from across the Outer Ring Road and saves weekday peak-hour drives. Keep the notebook visible on camera; many families pair a weekend visit with one online evening.

How do I test a Class 10 tutor in a free demo in Bengaluru?

In a free Class 10 demo in Bengaluru, treat the lesson as an interview about your child's exam. Ask how the tutor tracks the SSLC pattern, how CBSE internal marks and the second exam affect planning, or which IGCSE tier fits. Hand over your child's last test and ask which errors cost most. Watch whether they mark method line by line.
