Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Middle school is easy to underrate. Nothing in Classes 6 to 8 is a board exam, so a slipping grade can feel like something to fix later. Yet this is where algebra starts, science splits into real physics, chemistry and biology ideas, and a third language often enters the timetable. A child who leaves Class 8 with weak fractions or no study routine walks into Class 9 already behind, whether the goal is the Karnataka SSLC, a CBSE or ICSE board paper, or IGCSE. In this guide Aaditya Kashyap, who writes on CBSE and ICSE science, and the NXTutors Academic Team explain what changes in these years, how each board handles them, and how to find a tutor who can reach your part of Bengaluru.
The shift is less about difficulty than about independence. In the primary classes, a teacher checked almost every page. From Class 6:
A middle-school tutor's real task is to teach these new ways of working, not just to re-explain chapters.
| Board or programme | What is distinctive | What the tutor should do |
|---|---|---|
| Karnataka state board | School years leading towards the SSLC, which the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board conducts at the end of Class 10 | Teach from the state textbooks in the child's medium and follow the school's test calendar |
| CBSE | Three-language framework (R1, R2, R3), with the third language compulsory from Class VI from 2026-27; NCERT's newer books Ganita Prakash for maths and Curiosity for science | Use the current NCERT edition, not an older guidebook, and plan time for the third language |
| ICSE | CISCE regulations leave Classes I to VIII to school-chosen books and expect a third language from at least Class V to Class VIII, examined internally | Get the school's book list and keep English writing strong |
| IB Middle Years Programme | Ages 11 to 16 over five years, eight subject groups, with at least 50 teaching hours per group each year | Work to the unit's criteria and help the student plan, never write the task |
| Cambridge Lower Secondary | Typically ages 11 to 14; Checkpoint is an optional assessment | Follow the school's stage and, if it sits Checkpoint, practise that style |
Our Karnataka board tutors in Bengaluru, CBSE, ICSE and IB pages go deeper into each board.
| Subject | Common trouble spot | What a tutor does |
|---|---|---|
| Maths | Fractions and negative numbers carried over shakily; algebraic expressions; word problems on ratio | Goes back to the weak idea, then builds forward with short daily practice |
| Science | Explaining an activity in words; diagrams; the first chemical ideas | Asks "why" after every answer and gets the child to draw and label from memory |
| English | Grammar in context; organising a longer composition | Plans, writes and marks one piece a week |
| Social science | Long answers and maps | Teaches a note-making method, then steps back |
| Second or third language | A language not spoken at home | A short separate weekly slot with a language tutor |
For most children, one tutor for maths and science together is enough at this stage. See our maths and science home tutors in Bengaluru if one subject needs a specialist.
A good tutor checks these habits as closely as the marks, and hands responsibility back to the child step by step through Class 8.
Middle school brings models, charts, presentations and, in the IB MYP, assessed tasks. The rule is simple: the tutor may explain the topic, help the child plan, and ask questions about a draft, but the work must be the child's own. Schools notice when a Class 7 project reads like an adult wrote it, and the child learns nothing from it. If a project takes over a whole week of tuition, ask the tutor to keep at least half of each session on the core subjects.
When a family moves to Bengaluru mid-way through school, a change of board may come at the same moment. The middle years are the kindest time for it, because nothing is yet examined by the board, but the gaps are real. A child moving from a state board elsewhere into CBSE may meet a different order of maths topics; one moving into ICSE usually finds the English and the written answers more demanding; one joining the Karnataka state board may need help with a language the family does not speak. Ask the new school for its syllabus for the year just finished as well as the current one, and give both to the tutor. The first four to six weeks should be spent finding and filling the holes, with the new class work kept up alongside. Our guide on switching from CBSE to IB or IGCSE covers a move to an international programme.
| Zone | Typical route | Slot advice |
|---|---|---|
| Jayanagar, JP Nagar & Banashankari | Green Line to the nearest station, then a walk or short auto | Parking near the Jayanagar shops is tight in the evening, so metro tutors are steadier |
| Hennur, Kalyan Nagar & Banaswadi | Bus, two-wheeler or cab; the Blue Line here is under construction | A tutor already living in the zone keeps weekday sessions regular |
| Frazer Town, Richmond Town & Ulsoor | Purple Line to Halasuru or Trinity for Ulsoor | An afternoon or early evening slot avoids the shopping-street crowds |
| Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar & Yeshwanthpur | Green Line, with stations a short walk or auto from most homes | Market roads fill in the evening; a slightly earlier start helps |
| Vijayanagar, RR Nagar & Kengeri | Purple Line between the western stations | Riding the metro avoids Mysore Road at rush hour |
| BTM, Bannerghatta Road & Electronic City | By road on Bannerghatta Road, where the Pink Line is built but not open | Agree a slot outside the office rush on the main road |
The South Bengaluru and West and Central Bengaluru guides add more on these routes.
Both can work at this age, and the right choice depends on the child more than the subject. A child who drifts or hides confusion does better with a tutor at the table. A self-motivated Class 7 or 8 student can do well online, provided the tutor sees the notebook live, through a phone camera above the page or a writing tablet. Online also helps when the only tutor for a particular language or programme lives across the city. Many families mix the two: home on one weekday, online for a shorter check-in later in the week. Our online tutoring for Bengaluru students page covers the setup.
The first class with the tutor you choose is a free demo. Use it to see how the tutor thinks:
If it is not a fit, the next tutor on the shortlist gives their own demo, and switching later is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified. The demo class checklist has more ideas.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Middle-school tuition usually sits below the senior classes. The subjects covered, the programme (IB MYP and Cambridge specialists may charge more), the number of weekly sessions and the tutor's trip at your hour all move the figure. Tutors set their own fees, shown before the demo; see the Bengaluru fees guide and our pricing guide.
Banashankari stretches across six stages, so tell us yours: the inner stages are near the Green Line, while the outer ones are easier by road. In Hennur, with no metro yet, a tutor from the same neighbourhood or nearby Kothanur is the practical choice. Ulsoor is well served by the Purple Line, so tutors from Indiranagar or the centre can arrive straight from the station.
Malleshwaram visits are mostly to houses or small buildings on numbered crosses, with three Green Line stations nearby. Kengeri has the Purple Line and a railway station close together, which helps tutors from Vijayanagar or RR Nagar. And in Arekere, on Bannerghatta Road, older layout houses are a doorstep visit while the apartment complexes need a gate entry.

A Class 6, 7 or 8 student in Bengaluru needs a tutor only when a specific problem lasts. Signs are falling maths or science marks for more than a term, lasting confusion over algebra or fractions, or no study routine before Class 9. These years form the habits for the SSLC, CBSE, ICSE or IGCSE board years.
For a Bengaluru child moving into Class 6, the big change is independence rather than difficulty. Subjects multiply with different teachers, maths turns abstract with letters and negative numbers, science asks why, written answers lengthen, and self-study is assumed. A tutor's real task is to teach these new ways of working.
From 2026-27, Bengaluru CBSE students in Classes 6 to 8 follow a three-language framework in which the third language is compulsory from Class VI. NCERT's newer middle-school books include Ganita Prakash for maths and Curiosity for science. A tutor should work from the current editions, not older guidebooks.
Yes, NXTutors matches Bengaluru tutors for Karnataka state board Classes 6 to 8 who teach from the state textbooks in your child's medium and follow the school's test calendar. Tell us the medium and the subjects that worry you. The SSLC at the end of Class 10 is conducted by KSEAB.
Yes, a Bengaluru tutor can help with the IB MYP or Cambridge Lower Secondary. The MYP runs five years from age 11 with eight subject groups; Cambridge Lower Secondary typically covers ages 11 to 14 with an optional Checkpoint. The tutor helps plan and explains criteria, but never writes assessed work.
Most Bengaluru middle-school children need one tutor for maths and science together, with English writing if compositions are weak. Social science usually needs a note-making method rather than weekly tuition. A second or third language not spoken at home suits a short separate weekly slot with a language tutor.
A Bengaluru child should reach Class 9 with five study habits already in place. They are a fixed daily study slot, a mistakes notebook revisited before tests, working shown every time, twenty minutes of reading a day, and a week planned on paper. A good tutor checks these as closely as marks and hands responsibility back through Class 8.
For Classes 6 to 8 in Bengaluru, the right choice depends more on the child than the subject. A child who drifts or hides confusion does better with a tutor at the table, while a self-motivated Class 7 or 8 student can do well online if the tutor sees the notebook live. Many families mix both.
In a Class 6 to 8 demo in Bengaluru, see whether the tutor asks for the school book and last test before teaching. They should trace an algebra mistake back to fractions, have your child explain aloud, and ask for reasons and diagrams in science. You should leave with a plan for the next month.
