Every board calls it commerce, but subject names, textbooks and marking differ. We ask for the exact subject list from the timetable before shortlisting anyone.

How should a tutor approach Karnataka PUC commerce?

First and second PUC are taught in pre-university colleges under the state's Department of School Education (Pre-University), and the II PUC examination at the end is conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board. Combinations are set at college level, so the tutor needs your child's actual list rather than a general idea of "commerce". We do not reproduce paper patterns here; the department and the board revise them, and the current versions are on their websites and with the college.

• Work from the prescribed textbook. A tutor used to NCERT books must check the state edition chapter by chapter before teaching from it.
• Match the medium. If your child writes business studies or economics in Kannada, the tutor should teach the terms in Kannada too.
• Use the department's own material. Its model question papers carry a note that they are for practice and do not predict the annual paper, but they show the style, and the First PUC question bank and lesson-based assessment sheets give graded practice.
• Treat theory as a skill. Business studies rewards definitions, features, points and examples set out clearly; students strong in accounts often lose easy marks here.

How should you split the help across subjects?

Commerce subjects come in two kinds. Accountancy and statistics or maths are solved on paper step by step and improve with volume of practice. Business studies, ISC Commerce and most of economics are written subjects, with diagrams and some numericals in economics. Few tutors are equally good at both, which is the real decision.

Planning the first and second year

The first year sets up everything after it. Accountancy starts from the basic recording process, economics adds statistics and demand and supply, and business studies builds a vocabulary. The second year moves accounts to partnerships and companies, economics to the whole economy, and brings the board exam, entrance tests and college applications into the same few months.

1. First term of year one: journal, ledger and trial balance until they are automatic, and a glossary for business studies. The cheapest moment to bring in a tutor.
2. Rest of year one: final accounts with adjustments, and one full written theory answer every week.
3. Start of year two: partnership accounts early, since later chapters lean on them; economics numericals kept going alongside.
4. Mid-year two: company accounts and financial statement analysis; a revision loop for theory.
5. Before the board exam: timed past and model papers in every subject, with the tutor marking theory answers line by line; entrance practice added once board answers are secure.

Where do CUET and CA Foundation fit?

CUET (UG). Domain subjects named in the National Testing Agency's bulletin for 2026 include Business Studies, Accountancy / Book Keeping with code 301, and Economics / Business Economics with code 309. A domain test is 60 minutes long, has 50 questions that must all be attempted, and is set on the NCERT Class 12 syllabus. CA Foundation. Under its new scheme, ICAI's Foundation course has four papers: Paper 1 is Accounting, Paper 2 Business Laws, Paper 3 Quantitative Aptitude and Paper 4 Business Economics. School accountancy and economics feed the first and last; business law and quantitative aptitude are fresh ground. Eligibility, registration and sittings are decided by ICAI and published on icai.org. Mention the goal at the start, so the school tutor builds the overlapping subjects with it in mind.

Finding commerce tutors across Bengaluru

Your shortlist begins with tutors in your locality, then those who already travel there, then the rest of the city, then online tutors anywhere in India. How easily a tutor can come regularly depends mostly on the metro and the big roads:

Is commerce better taught at home or online?

Accounts is the subject that gains most from a tutor in the room, because a posting to the wrong side or a forgotten adjustment is spotted the moment the pen moves. Business studies and economics translate well to a screen: talk through the idea, write the answer, send a picture or share the document for marking. PUC students often have few free hours before evening. Many families therefore keep accountancy as a home visit, once or twice a week, from a tutor on their side of the city, and put the theory subjects online at a later hour. What should you look for in a commerce demo?

• Before teaching anything, does the tutor find out the PUC combination or board, the subject names on the timetable, the medium and the book?
• In an accountancy problem, is your child holding the pen, with the tutor stepping in at the first wrong entry rather than at the final total?
• For business studies or ISC Commerce, does the tutor set a short written question and then mark it point by point in front of you?
• For economics, who draws the curves? It should be your child, with the tutor correcting labels and shifts.
• Does the tutor connect subjects, say share capital in accounts with sources of finance in business studies?
• Are you given a simple weekly timetable with each subject on its own day?

What does a commerce tutor in Bengaluru charge, and how do you start?
