Home Tuition in West and Central Bengaluru: A Locality Guide
West and central Bengaluru is where the city's older planned neighbourhoods sit: Malleshwaram, laid out in 1889, Rajajinagar, inaugurated in 1949, and the Cantonment-era streets of Richmond Town, Cooke Town and Frazer Town. Many homes here are independent houses or small buildings, so a tutor more often rings a bell than signs a society register. The metro is a strength too: the Green Line runs through the north-west, and the Purple Line crosses the centre and runs west to Kengeri and Challaghatta.
This guide covers three zones: Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar and Yeshwanthpur; Vijayanagar, RR Nagar and Kengeri; and Frazer Town, Richmond Town and Ulsoor. For each locality it gives the stations tutors use, the doorstep or gate routine, and the timing that keeps classes regular.
| Zone | Open lines | Still to open |
|---|---|---|
| Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar and Yeshwanthpur | Green Line, from Sampige Road to Yeshwanthpur and beyond | None |
| Vijayanagar, RR Nagar and Kengeri | Purple Line, from Hosahalli to Challaghatta | None |
| Frazer Town, Richmond Town and Ulsoor | Purple Line at Trinity, Halasuru and MG Road | Pink Line, including Pottery Town station |
Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar and Yeshwanthpur
The Green Line's Reach 3, from Sampige Road to Yeshwanthpur, opened on 1 March 2014 with stations including Srirampura, Rajajinagar, Mahalakshmi, Sandal Soap Factory and Yeshwanthpur, and the line links the Tumkur Road suburbs with Majestic and south Bengaluru. Yeshwanthpur station stands on Tumkur Road opposite Yesvantpur Junction, a railway station commissioned in 1881.
- Malleshwaram: laid out in 1889 on a grid of cross roads and mains around Sampige Road and Margosa Road. Older houses, many being rebuilt as small apartment blocks, mean most visits go straight to the doorstep. Sampige Road, Srirampura and Sandal Soap Factory stations are close; the market roads get busy in the evening, so a slightly earlier slot helps.
- Sadashivanagar: built in the 1960s and 1970s on former palace gardens and once known as Palace Orchards. Large houses on wide, quiet roads often have security staff at the gate, so share the tutor's name in advance. With no station inside, tutors ride to a Malleshwaram station and take an auto, or come along Bellary Road, which is heavy in the evening.
- Rajajinagar: a planned suburb from 1949, divided between housing plots and an industrial area, in numbered blocks. Apartment buildings have replaced many original houses, so a tutor may reach a front door or a building gate. Rajajinagar station on Chord Road makes metro and a short walk the easy route; Chord Road is slow at peak hours.
- Mahalakshmi Layout: next to Rajajinagar, Basaveshwaranagar and Yeshwanthpur, and sometimes called Temple Layout. Independent houses and builder floors mean the tutor arrives at the doorstep. Mahalakshmi station on Chord Road serves the layout; agree a slot that avoids the evening rush there.
- Yeshwanthpur: known for its railway junction and the city's largest wholesale produce market, with Tumkur Road running through and Peenya and Jalahalli nearby. Homes range from older houses to gated complexes, so check the gate routine first. Tumkur Road is heavy at peak hours, so weekday classes work better slightly later.
Vijayanagar, RR Nagar and Kengeri
The Purple Line's western stations from Magadi Road to Mysuru Road, including Hosahalli, Vijayanagar, Attiguppe and Deepanjali Nagar, opened on 16 November 2015. The extension to Kengeri, through Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Jnanabharathi and Pattanagere, followed on 30 August 2021, and Challaghatta, the western terminus, on 9 October 2023. Mysore Road, part of NH-275 since 2014, is the main road spine.
- Basaveshwaranagar: grew in the 1970s and 1980s as an extension first called West of Chord Road, on hilly ground with some steep streets. Houses and small apartment buildings mean a doorbell visit and easy street parking. Tutors use Rajajinagar on the Green Line or Vijayanagar on the Purple Line and an auto; Chord Road crowds at school and office hours.
- Vijayanagar: between Mysore Road and Magadi Road, with Chord Road passing through and Hampinagar, Attiguppe and Govindrajnagar among its sub-localities. Tree-lined streets of houses mean most tutors walk up to the door. Vijayanagar, Attiguppe and Hosahalli stations, and a large bus terminal near Attiguppe, make it easy to reach.
- Nagarbhavi: in two stages, the 2nd laid out by the BDA in numbered blocks. Plotted houses mean doorstep visits and easy parking for a tutor on a two-wheeler. The Outer Ring Road runs past; tutors without a vehicle combine Vijayanagar or Attiguppe station with an auto, and online sessions can add higher-level board subjects.
- RR Nagar: Rajarajeshwari Nagar, along Mysore Road, entered through a well-known arch, with Nagarbhavi to the north and Kengeri to the south-west. Houses on older layouts sit beside newer apartment projects, some gated, so add the tutor to the visitor list where needed. Rajarajeshwari Nagar station gives tutors from Vijayanagar or Kengeri a direct ride.
- Kengeri: a BDA satellite town on Mysore Road, now inside city limits, with access to the NICE Road and the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway. Homes range from houses and builder floors to gated complexes. Kengeri, Kengeri Bus Terminal and Pattanagere stations, plus Kengeri railway station on the Mysuru line, let tutors travel by metro and avoid Mysore Road traffic.
Frazer Town, Richmond Town and Ulsoor
The Purple Line's first section, Baiyappanahalli to MG Road, opened on 20 October 2011 with Halasuru and Trinity stations. Pottery Town station on the Pink Line's underground section is under construction and is expected to serve Frazer Town, Cox Town and Richards Town; it is not open, so tutors to those streets come by road or by Purple Line and auto.
- Frazer Town: founded in 1906 and officially named Pulakeshi Nagar, beside Cooke Town, Cox Town and Richards Town, with Bangalore East railway station on its edge. Heritage bungalows, older houses and multi-storey apartments mean either a doorbell or a building gate. Shopping streets crowd in the evening, so an afternoon or early-evening class suits.
- Cooke Town: laid out in 1900, with parks and quiet lanes, next to Bangalore East and Banaswadi railway stations. Many bungalows have given way to low-rise flats and some gated apartments, so the tutor may register with a guard or ring a bell. An early slot beats weekday evening traffic toward the main roads.
- Richmond Town: established in 1883 as part of the Bangalore Cantonment, bordered by Shanthinagar, Langford Town and Ashok Nagar. Many apartment buildings have a guard at the entrance, so give the tutor's details at the gate. MG Road on the Purple Line is the nearest station; central roads are congested at office hours, so a later evening or weekend slot is steadier.
- Ulsoor: officially Halasuru, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city, near the eastern end of MG Road and centred on Halasuru Lake, with Indiranagar and Cambridge Layout as neighbours. Homes mix old houses near the temples, standalone apartments and some gated societies. Trinity and Halasuru stations bring tutors straight from Indiranagar or the city centre.
Which slot should a family in the west or centre choose?
- On the Green or Purple Line: an evening slot is realistic when the tutor comes by metro; agree the last leg from the station once.
- Near Chord Road, Tumkur Road or Bellary Road: start soon after school or later in the evening, outside the office rush.
- In the Cantonment streets: afternoons and early evenings avoid the crowded shopping roads.

Frequently asked questions
Which metro stations serve Malleshwaram?
Sampige Road, Srirampura and Sandal Soap Factory on the Green Line serve Malleshwaram, and Malleswaram railway station is nearby. Tutors from Rajajinagar or further along the line can come by metro and finish with a short auto ride. Most homes are houses or small buildings, so there is rarely a society gate to register at.
Can a tutor reach RR Nagar and Kengeri by metro?
Yes. Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Jnanabharathi, Pattanagere, Kengeri Bus Terminal and Kengeri stations on the Purple Line opened in August 2021, and Challaghatta followed in October 2023. A tutor from Vijayanagar can ride straight through, which avoids the office-hour traffic on Mysore Road, and take a short auto to the house.
Is there a metro station in Frazer Town?
Not yet. Pottery Town station on the Pink Line's underground section is under construction and is expected to serve Frazer Town, Cox Town and Richards Town. Until it opens, tutors come by road or by Purple Line and auto, and Bangalore East railway station sits on the edge of Frazer Town.
Do tutors need a gate pass in Sadashivanagar or Richmond Town?
Often, yes. Many large houses in Sadashivanagar have security staff at the gate, and many Richmond Town apartment buildings have a guard at the entrance. Share the tutor's name before the free demo class, so the guard expects them and the first session starts on time.
How much does home tuition cost in west and central Bengaluru?
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fees, and each one appears on your shortlist before the free demo.
