What should a Rajasthan board chemistry student expect?

On the Rajasthan board, chemistry and physics are the two compulsory subjects of the Senior Secondary science faculty. The board's 2026-27 syllabus prescribes NCERT chemistry books and gives the subject 70 theory marks, 56 from the written paper and 14 sessional, with a separate 30-mark practical. A student must clear theory and practical independently, so a strong written score cannot cover a weak lab result.

The full syllabus is published on the board's site, rajeduboard.rajasthan.gov.in, along with model questions and old papers, and the board says its website syllabus takes priority if a printed book disagrees. How does CBSE spread Class 12 chemistry marks across chapters?

CBSE fixes theory marks chapter by chapter, and the 2026-27 paper keeps last session's design. Sorted into mark bands, the ten chapters give a tutor a ready-made order of priority:

Add the bands up by branch and organic chemistry holds 33 marks, physical 23 and inorganic 14, which is why a weekly plan that starts from organic rarely goes wrong. Five lettered sections make up the paper, a few questions offer an internal choice, and neither a calculator nor a log table may be taken in. Recall and understanding account for roughly two-fifths; the remaining marks ask a student to use what they know on new material. Which topics has CBSE dropped, and why should entrance students care?

This session, CBSE has removed two pieces of the Class 12 course altogether: the solid state, and the p-block elements from Group 15 through Group 18. Four further topics remain in the textbook but are tested only inside school, never on the board paper: surface chemistry, the isolation of elements, polymers, and chemistry in everyday life. NEET and JEE syllabi are released separately by NTA and can still include material a board has removed, parts of the p-block among them. Use the board list for board revision only, and check the entrance list before crossing anything off.

What should the home tutor do differently in each branch?

Physical chemistry

Watch the student solve one or two problems line by line. Most lost marks come from a unit, a power of ten or a sign, not from the formula.

Organic chemistry

Keep a single sheet on which every functional group is joined to the ones it can become, and ask the student to rebuild it from memory each week, then compare it with NCERT. Conversion questions then become routes rather than lists.

Inorganic chemistry

Quiz in short bursts straight from the NCERT text, and ask for the reason behind each trend. NEET in particular rewards the exact textbook line.

End each session with two board-style "give reasons" questions, marked before the tutor leaves, so the written paper keeps pace with objective practice.

Can practical marks be prepared at home?

Partly, and the effort pays. On CBSE, titration and salt analysis bring 8 marks each, a content-based experiment 6, and 4 each go to the project and to the record with the viva. This session's titration uses permanganate against oxalic acid or Mohr's salt, and each student weighs and makes up the standard solution personally. Glassware stays at school, but a tutor at home can rehearse the molarity working, a clean table of burette readings, the order of tests in salt analysis and the usual viva questions. • ISC: CISCE pairs the theory paper with practical and project work, and answers are expected to explain more than a single NCERT-style line.
• IB Diploma: taught at SL and HL under two themes, structure and reactivity. The scientific investigation must be the student's own; a tutor can ask questions about it but not shape it.
