Now taking on home, online and hybrid tutors · in Mysuru
First language or second language? That is the question an English tutor in Mysuru should ask before anything else. KSEAB's list of SSLC blueprints includes English among the first-language papers and also as a second-language paper alongside Kannada, and the two make different demands. Add PU English, CBSE English Language and Literature, ICSE and ISC papers, early readers and spoken English, and the word English in a request can mean half a dozen different jobs. This page sets out what Mysuru families usually want from an English tutor and how you get chosen.

NXTutors works from requests, not job adverts. A parent names the class, the board, the skill that is letting the child down and the locality; we suggest two or three tutors whose profiles fit, closest first, and the parent sees each fee before a free first demo. You decide which ages and papers you take, where you travel and whether you teach online, and you set your own fee.
State-syllabus families make up much of the board-paper work. The first-language and second-language English papers in the SSLC differ in expectation, so a tutor has to know which one is on the hall ticket before planning a single lesson. In the PU years English sits among the language papers for which the PU department publishes model question papers, and its textbooks come in Kannada-medium and English-medium versions. We do not set out SSLC or PUC English patterns here, because the board revises blueprints; families judge a tutor by whether lessons use the prescribed textbook and the board's own model papers.
CBSE Class 10 English Language and Literature gives the board paper 80 marks: reading 20, with one discursive and one factual, case-based passage carrying a chart or data; grammar 10; writing 10, split between a formal letter and an analytical paragraph that reads a graph or chart; and literature 40 from First Flight and Footprints without Feet. The school adds 20, five of them for listening and speaking. In Classes 11 and 12, English Core shifts weight toward literature, from 31 marks in Class 11 to 40 in Class 12, with internal marks for listening, speaking and a project. ICSE students write separate language and literature papers, and ISC students face a long composition chosen from several topics, so CISCE families look for a tutor who can mark extended writing honestly.
Two other needs come up often in Mysuru. One is the child who studied in Kannada medium and now meets English-medium textbooks at PU or on changing school; that child needs a tutor at ease in both languages who uses Kannada as a support and then withdraws it. The other is spoken confidence: a student who understands everything in class but answers in single words. Primary-age requests, Classes 1 to 5, centre on reading aloud without guessing, phonics, and short written sentences.
English lessons are often shorter and more frequent than maths or science, so a tight round of nearby homes pays off. A tutor in Saraswathipuram or Kuvempunagar can cover South-West Mysuru's plotted layouts along the Outer Ring Road; one near Mysore Junction can reach Gokulam, Yadavagiri, Vontikoppal and Jayalakshmipuram by bus or auto. Chamarajapuram, Krishnamurthypuram, Ashokapuram, Chamundipuram and J.P. Nagar form Central and South Mysuru, where older lanes and shopping streets mean you should ask in advance where to park.
In North-West Mysuru, Vijayanagar's four stages repeat street patterns, so take the stage, phase, cross and main road plus a landmark; Hinkal apartment buildings register visitors at the gate. East Mysuru's Bannimantap, Siddhartha Layout and Raghavendra Nagar each need a slightly different approach, and during Dasara the area near the Bannimantap Parade Grounds is very crowded, so agree in advance which lessons move online that week. Spoken-English and ISC literature sessions both work well over video, which lets you take students anywhere in the city.
Make your profile say exactly which English you teach. List the SSLC papers, PU, CBSE, ICSE or ISC classes you handle, whether you take spoken English or early reading, and whether you can explain in Kannada. Parents respond to concrete method: a line such as I collect errors from your child's own writing and fix one pattern a week is more persuasive than a general promise of fluency.
In the demo, ask the child to write five or six lines on a familiar topic and to read a short passage aloud. Within minutes you will see whether the gap is reading, grammar, structure or confidence; say so plainly to the parent and show one repair, such as rebuilding a sentence or outlining a literature answer. Offer a slot you can keep, suggest an online option for Dasara week or exam weeks, and see how you get paid before settling the timetable.

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.
You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
Ask the parent to check the hall ticket or the school's subject list before the demo. KSEAB lists English as a first-language paper and as a second-language paper alongside Kannada, and the two need different preparation.
They come up for children of all ages, often alongside board work. Mention spoken English on your profile if you teach it, and describe how you build it, for example short talks or a spoken summary at the end of each lesson.
Not for every student, but it widens your reach. Children moving from Kannada-medium study often learn faster when a tutor can explain a grammar point in Kannada for the first few months. Say on your profile which languages you can explain in.
Literature carries 40 marks in Class 12, so close reading and well-organised long answers come first, followed by creative writing formats and reading passages. Keep a short weekly session even when the student is busy with science or commerce subjects.
