Now taking on home, online and hybrid tutors · in Kohima
An English tutor in Kohima typically sees each student once or twice a week, sets a piece of writing every time and marks it before the next session, whether that session is at home or online. English moves to the screen more easily than any other subject, which helps in the June to September rains, when reading and written work can be sent ahead and marked remotely. On the Nagaland board's calendar the year runs almost exactly with the calendar year: literature from January, unseen passages and note making in the middle months, full papers from October.

English is a subject where marks drain away quietly. A Kohima student may read well and still lose marks on the format of a notice, or know a chapter thoroughly and write an answer too thin to earn credit; another may manage every written task yet stay silent when asked to speak. Parents want a tutor who can see which of these is happening and fix it. Most students here sit the Nagaland Board of School Education's HSLC and HSSLC papers or CBSE, with some on CISCE. This page explains the demand, the wards and how to stand out.
Requests for younger children centre on reading. In the primary years parents notice a child who guesses words from their first letters, loses the place on the page or quietly avoids books, and they want little-and-often practice: new words sounded out, a page read aloud with gentle correction and the story retold in the child's own words. Where English is not the main language at home, chatting in English about pictures and simple stories builds listening as well. These families ask for someone who enjoys primary classes, not a Class 12 specialist.
Class 9 and 10 requests follow the HSLC paper. The board lists a multi-skill English course book for these classes and also offers Alternative English as a separate subject, so the first question is which one the child takes. The HSLC 2026 English blueprint sets 38 questions for 80 marks: reading 20 through three unseen passages, writing 20, literature 25 and grammar 15. Ten multiple-choice and fifteen very short answers of one mark each reward accuracy, while a single seven-mark article, speech, formal letter or report is the largest question on the paper. CBSE Class 10 students meet a different balance, with literature worth 40 of the 80 board marks.
At the higher secondary stage the HSSLC 2026 English blueprint sets 30 questions for 80 marks. A long reading text carries 10 marks through two five-mark questions, note making is worth 7, reading comprehension adds 8, and writing widens to messages, advertisements, opinions, forms, articles, newspaper reports, speeches, business letters and job applications. Grammar narrows to tense, idioms and phrases, and modal auxiliaries. The board's calendars also list an English listening and speaking test for Classes 9 and 10 and for 11 and 12, so spoken practice counts at school too.
Kohima is a hill city without a rail line, where tutors move by taxi, bus or two-wheeler and many homes sit above or below the road. Its four zones are North Kohima & Kohima Village, Main Town & Midland, Chandmari & PR Hill, and Lerie & Agri Farm. Peraciezie, at the northern end beside Bayavü Hill, is easier for tutors on that side; if you cross from the south, avoid the hour when offices close. Kohima Village, the old settlement on the high ground, needs the nearest taxi point and a landmark from there.
Officers' Hill, also called Thegabakha, lies west of the centre between Midland and PR Hill; its narrow roads mean asking in advance where to leave a two-wheeler. Lower Chandmari is a ward of its own beside Upper Chandmari, so confirm which one, and late-afternoon slots suit it. Lerie, grouped with New Ministers' Hill and New Reserve at the southern end, suits weekday visits from a tutor from Agri Farm or PR Hill. Because English travels well online, you can keep home visits close to your ward and teach older students elsewhere on screen.
Kohima parents choose an English tutor on fit: the paper, the skill and the ward. On your profile, name the courses you teach (HSLC, HSSLC, Alternative English, CBSE, ICSE or ISC), whether you teach early reading or spoken English, and the wards you can reach. A clear, well-written profile introduction is itself evidence for an English tutor, so take care with it. Turn on online teaching so families can keep lessons going on wet evenings.
In the free demo, ask to see a marked answer before teaching. Pick the weakest strand from it, reading, writing, grammar or speaking, and teach one fix the child can use at once, such as a notice format or a plan for a literature answer. Let the child do most of the reading, talking and writing, and describe the outline of their paper so the parent sees you know it. End by setting a piece of writing and a date for marking it. Families can switch tutor at no cost, so steady marking is what keeps a student; see how you get paid on the tutor terms page.

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.
You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
In the 2026 blueprint it is a seven-mark writing task: an article, speech, formal letter or report. It is worth practising every fortnight from early in Class 10.
The board offers both at secondary and higher secondary level, with different books. Confirm which one the student takes before planning, and say on your profile which you teach.
A long reading text worth 10 marks, note making worth 7, wider writing tasks such as reports, speeches and job applications, and grammar narrowed to tense, idioms and phrases, and modal auxiliaries.
Yes. Reading and written work can be sent ahead and marked remotely, so English adapts well to online lessons, especially during the June to September rains. Online students can be anywhere in India.
Some do, for interviews or class presentations, and the board's calendars list a listening and speaking test. Closing each lesson with a short spoken summary is a simple way to build it.
