JAC, the Jharkhand Academic Council, is the state board and holds the Class 12 examination for its schools. We keep our description of its biology paper general. A JAC student needs a tutor who teaches from the textbooks and question style the school follows, and who checks the council's syllabus, timetable and pattern in its own notices each year rather than relying on an old paper. If your child is also preparing for NEET, the tutor should add objective practice on the NEET syllabus alongside the board work.

How is the CBSE Class 12 biology paper designed?

CBSE's 2026-27 design for Class 12 puts about half the marks on knowledge and understanding, about 30% on applying ideas and about 20% on analysing, evaluating and creating. Questions range from multiple choice and assertion-reason to short and long answers and case-based or passage-based items, and roughly a third of the paper offers internal choice. In practice, memory serves the knowledge and understanding share well enough; the rest needs practice with unfamiliar data, experiments described in a passage, and questions that ask why rather than what. A tutor should set a few such questions every week, and mark them the way a board examiner would.

From ICSE Class 10 to ISC biology: what gets harder?

ICSE students already take biology as a paper of its own, with its own internal assessment, so they arrive in Class 11 used to detailed diagrams and exact definitions. ISC keeps that style and adds depth and volume. The Class 12 theory paper spreads its 70 marks across Reproduction (16), Genetics and Evolution (15), Biology and Human Welfare (14), Ecology and Environment (15) and Biotechnology (10), and the syllabus expects structures to be taught with diagrams. The hardest change for most students is pace: more chapters, each longer, with the project and practical file running alongside. A tutor who sets a short weekly written test on the last two chapters keeps the volume under control.

When does a student need a biology tutor?

• The idea is clear but the answer is not. Marks lost for loose wording or missing steps, even when your child can explain the topic aloud.
• Diagrams left out. Questions that ask for a labelled figure answered in words only, or labels in the wrong places.
• Blank data questions. Graphs and experiment passages skipped or answered from general knowledge.
• Good unit tests, weak half-yearly. Usually a sign that nothing is being revised after the chapter test.
• Inheritance problems. Crosses and pedigrees that go wrong halfway through.

How can a student protect the practical marks?

Practical marks are the easiest to lose through neglect. In CBSE they are 30 of every 100, drawn from experiments, slide preparation, spotting, the practical record and an investigatory project with a viva. In ISC Class 12 they are a three-hour practical of 15, project work of 10 and a practical file of 5. A tutor can help in ways that keep the work honest:

• Checking each month that the record or file is written up and complete.
• Revising the theory behind each experiment so the viva holds no surprises.
• Practising spotting from labelled images before the practical exam.
• Questioning the project plan and method, while the project itself stays the student's work.
