Now taking on home, online and hybrid tutors · in Shillong
Can you get from your door to a student's door in Rynjah, Jaiaw or Laban by shared taxi in the rain, and still have the energy to explain quadratic equations for an hour? In Shillong that question matters as much as your degree. The city is built on slopes, homes sit above and below the road, and many lessons begin with a walk down a flight of steps. Maths tutors who plan their localities carefully can build a dependable week here; those who accept homes on every side of town tend to spend their evenings in traffic.
No open maths requests in Shillong right now. New family requests appear here as they come in; join now so they can reach you.
This guide is for maths teachers considering Shillong. It sets out the boards and classes that ask for maths, how the four zones work for a tutor without a car, what families expect, and how to use the free demo well. NXTutors does not run job adverts. A parent sends one request with class, board, locality and timing, and we suggest two or three tutors, nearest first. You decide your classes, localities, mode and fee.
The Meghalaya Board of School Education sets the pattern for a large share of maths work. MBOSE conducts the SSLC examination at the end of Class 10 and the HSSLC at the end of Class 12, where the board lists Science, Commerce, Arts and Vocational streams. Its website, mbose.in, carries syllabuses, booklists, sample and previous question papers and the academic calendar. A dependable MBOSE maths tutor plans from those documents and the books on the booklist, sets students the board's own previous papers under a clock, and takes every date from the board's notices rather than a forwarded message.
CBSE students, often living in the same lane as MBOSE ones, work from the NCERT textbooks. Their Class 10 maths comes as Standard or Basic, and the papers increasingly ask students to apply a method in a setting they have not seen, so practice with CBSE's sample papers and marking schemes is part of the job. ICSE and ISC students from CISCE-affiliated schools face a wide syllabus and long written solutions, which means planning early enough for two or more revision rounds. IB and Cambridge IGCSE maths learners are fewer and usually study with an online specialist.
Across boards, the steep points are familiar: Class 9 algebra and geometry, the Class 10 board year, and the step from Class 10 to Class 11, where functions, trigonometry and then calculus arrive quickly. HSSLC Science students who are thinking about JEE need board-style answers and entrance-style problems held in one plan, since the NCERT chapters in Classes 11 and 12 serve both. HSSLC Commerce students who take mathematics want clear, practical teaching of the chapters they find abstract. Younger children, up to Class 8, mainly need secure arithmetic and the habit of checking their own work.
Laitumkhrah & Rynjah is the zone where maths requests tend to cluster, because Laitumkhrah is known as a centre of education with many schools. Its roads fill at school opening and closing hours, so later evening slots run more smoothly. A tutor can link homes along one road here: Malki to Laitumkhrah, Laitumkhrah to Rynjah and Umpling, Nongthymmai to Madanrting. In Rynjah, ask for the bylane number; in Madanrting, agree a named bus stop as the meeting point on the first visit.
Police Bazar & Jaiaw is the easiest zone to reach by shared taxi or city bus, with the Jhalupara bus stand on GS Road beside Mawkhar, but market crowds near Iewduh make after-hours slots the norm. Laban & Upper Shillong suits a tutor who knows its parts, such as Lumparing or Rilbong; Upper Shillong is higher and more spread out, so offer earlier slots and an online fallback when mist settles. Mawlai & Pynthorumkhrah is easiest for tutors living nearby or in Jaiaw, since crossing the city at busy hours is slow. On the wettest monsoon evenings, a maths lesson moved online with a shared whiteboard keeps the week intact.
Shillong parents look for precise locality names, because the big names cover a lot of ground. Write "Laitumkhrah, Malki and Nongthymmai" rather than "east Shillong", and add the boards and classes in the same line, for example "MBOSE and CBSE maths, Classes 8 to 12". If you teach HSSLC Commerce mathematics or ISC, say so separately. Tick online as well as home if you can; families in Upper Shillong or Madanrting often combine the two, and online students from anywhere in India can then find you.
Arrive at the demo with a plan for the first fifteen minutes and none for the rest. Ask the student which question in last week's homework they could not finish, and start there. Let them talk through their working before you correct it, so you can see the actual misunderstanding. Then give a fresh question of the same kind and step back. End by telling the parent what you will cover in the next four weeks and how you will handle a rainy evening. Your fee is on your profile already; for payouts, see how you get paid on the tutor terms page.

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.
A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.
You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
From mbose.in, which publishes syllabuses, booklists, sample and previous question papers, the academic calendar and notices. Avoid forwarded copies.
Yes, if you choose localities on shared-taxi and bus routes. Police Bazar & Jaiaw is the simplest to reach that way; ask each family for the nearest named stop.
Agree in advance with the family that the lesson can move online that evening. It keeps the rhythm going and avoids lost weeks during the monsoon.
Some do, where mathematics is part of their subjects. Add it to your profile as a separate line so those families can find you.
Only if you live nearby or can teach there earlier in the day. It is higher and more spread out, and mist can settle quickly, so a home-plus-online mix often suits families there.
Yes. Class 11 and 12 NCERT chapters underpin both, so one plan can cover board answers and entrance problems. Agree the balance with the family at the demo.
