Tutoring in Shillong: what to know

Tuition work in Shillong falls into four zones. Police Bazar & Jaiaw is the old centre, with Police Bazar, Mawkhar, Jaiaw and Mawprem; Laban & Upper Shillong covers Laban with its parts such as Lumparing and Rilbong, Lawsohtun, and the hillside villages above the town; Laitumkhrah & Rynjah runs east through Malki, Laitumkhrah, Nongthymmai, Rynjah, Umpling and Madanrting; and Mawlai & Pynthorumkhrah takes in Mawlai, Pynthorumkhrah and Nongmynsong. The city has no rail link, so tutors move by shared taxi, city bus or two-wheeler. Many homes are in sloping lanes or numbered bylanes, so the practical skill is turning a locality, a lane and a landmark into a reliable route.

Boards come in three main groups. Many students sit the Meghalaya Board of School Education's SSLC at the end of Class 10 and its HSSLC at the end of Class 12, where the board lists Science, Commerce, Arts and Vocational streams. A second group works through the NCERT textbooks for CBSE; a smaller one is in CISCE-affiliated schools taking ICSE or ISC; IB and Cambridge IGCSE learners more often study with an online specialist. MBOSE's own website, mbose.in, carries the syllabuses, booklists, sample and previous question papers and the academic calendar, so plan lessons from those documents and list every board you teach on your profile.

Home and online teaching sit comfortably together here. Heavy monsoon rain and quick changes of weather on the higher slopes make an online session a sensible stand-in on the wettest days, and families in outer localities such as Upper Shillong or Madanrting often combine a home tutor with an online one. Take a request from Nongthymmai: NXTutors puts forward two or three names, drawn from that locality before its zone, the rest of Shillong and finally online, and the parent compares fees before a free first demo. Online students can live anywhere in India, so your week need not end at the localities you can reach.

How you get tuition work on NXTutors

Six steps from applying to your first class. Swipe to see each step.

  1. Sign up with a one-time code

Start on your phone with an OTP to your number or email. Next come your subjects, classes and boards, such as MBOSE, CBSE or ICSE, and the Shillong localities you can travel to every week.

  2. Upload your ID; our team reviews it

Then upload a government photo ID for our team to review; no family sees your profile until that is done, and each ID can sit on only one tutor account. This proves identity only, with no police or background check.

  3. Your profile carries the Verified badge

Once that review is done, families can open your profile: your boards and streams, the localities you cover from Mawlai to Laban, home, online or both, and the hourly fee you set yourself.

  4. A family nearby sends a request

A family in Jaiaw or Rynjah sends a request. The shortlist NXTutors builds holds two or three tutors, picked from that locality first, its zone second, the wider city third, and online last.

  5. Free demo; the family sees your fee first

Your fee is visible to the parent before anything is booked. Lesson one is a free demo, and we ask a parent to be at home for the demo; you meet the student and learn the lane, landmark and timing.

  6. Teach at home, online or both

From there your week is yours to shape: home students within reach, online learners anywhere in India, or both, with a session shifted online whenever monsoon rain slows the hill roads.

Boards you can teach in Shillong

Expect a mixed timetable in Shillong: an MBOSE SSLC candidate on Monday, an HSSLC Science or Commerce student midweek, a CBSE learner working from NCERT on Saturday. ICSE and ISC students come from CISCE-affiliated schools, and IB or Cambridge IGCSE learners usually look for a specialist online. Each board publishes its own documents: MBOSE puts syllabuses, booklists and question papers on mbose.in, CBSE its sample papers and marking schemes on its academic portal, and CISCE its regulations on cisce.org. Name each board and stream you teach.

Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE)

SSLC (Class 10); HSSLC (Class 12: Science, Commerce, Arts, Vocational)

MBOSE conducts the SSLC examination at the end of Class 10 and the HSSLC at the end of Class 12, with Science, Commerce, Arts and Vocational streams. Its website publishes syllabuses, booklists, sample question papers, previous years' papers and the academic calendar. Teach from the prescribed books on its booklist, practise on its own papers, and take dates only from the board's notices.

CBSE

Classes 1–12

CBSE students in Shillong often live on the same lane as MBOSE ones, so be clear which syllabus each child follows. Work from the NCERT textbooks, practise with the sample papers and marking schemes CBSE releases, and train students to set out complete, stepped answers. In Classes 11 and 12, that NCERT base also supports later JEE or NEET preparation.

CISCE (ICSE and ISC)

ICSE (Class 10); ISC (Class 12)

CISCE's two examinations, the ICSE after Class 10 and the ISC after Class 12, are taken in some Shillong schools. The syllabuses are wide and answers are long, English carries prescribed texts, and many subjects include internal assessment. Plan to finish the syllabus early enough for two or more revision rounds, and use the specimen papers CISCE publishes for timed practice.

Where in Shillong tutors are needed

Zones marked "Tutors needed" have the fewest tutors living in or travelling to them, so families there mostly see online tutors today. Add them to your travel areas to reach those families first.

Police Bazar & Jaiaw

Tutors needed

The centre is the easiest part of Shillong to reach by shared taxi or city bus, with the Jhalupara bus stand on GS Road beside Mawkhar, but market roads near Iewduh and the Police Bazar shops are crowded by day. Evening slots after shop hours are the norm. Expect flats above shopfronts, where you need a building name and floor, and older houses in Jaiaw and Mawprem lanes, where you need the lane and a landmark.

Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Mawprem, Police Bazar

Laban & Upper Shillong

Tutors needed

Laban families usually name their part, such as Lumparing, Madan Laban, Kench's Trace or Rilbong, so note it when you accept a request; shared taxis and buses reach it through Bara Bazar and the Rilbong side, and the market near the Last Stop is a handy meeting point. Upper Shillong is higher and more spread out, with weather that turns quickly, so offer earlier slots there and keep an online option ready for rain or mist.

Laban, Lawsohtun, Upper Shillong

Laitumkhrah & Rynjah

Tutors needed

This eastern spread is linked by roads: the national highway passes Malki and Nongthymmai, and a road via Goraline joins Laitumkhrah to Rynjah, so one evening can cover several homes. Laitumkhrah is known as a centre of education with many schools, which makes school opening and closing the busiest road times. In Rynjah, ask for the bylane number; in Umpling and Madanrting, agree whether to meet at the gate or a named bus stop.

Mawlai & Pynthorumkhrah

Tutors needed

Mawlai is large and divided into localities such as Mawlai Mawiong, Mawlai Nongpdeng and Kynton Massar, so always confirm which one and the nearest stop, for example Mawiong or Mawlai Pump. Homes here and in Pynthorumkhrah and Nongmynsong often sit on slopes reached by steps. Crossing the city at busy hours can be slow, so tutors living on this side, or in Jaiaw for the nearer parts of Mawlai, have the easiest evenings.

Women tutors welcome

For women tutors: you set the terms

Shillong's women tutors can teach through NXTutors in homes, online, or in a mix of the two. What reaches you is shaped by two settings on your profile, your localities and your available hours: a tutor in Laitumkhrah might keep to Malki, Nongthymmai and Rynjah, one in Jaiaw to the central wards and nearer Mawlai, and anyone can teach the rest of India online. With many homes down steps or along narrow lanes, ask the family to meet you at the road on a first visit. One ID check applies to every tutor who signs up, and we ask a parent to be at home for the demo. These are practical controls, not a promise about any household.

  • Choose home, online or both on your profile, and change it whenever you like.
  • List only the localities you are happy to reach; leaving out late cross-city trips is fine.
  • Open only the hours that suit you, and move a session online on heavy-rain days if you prefer.
  • The first meeting with any family is a free demo; we ask a parent to be at home for the demo.
  • Agree fees, timings and messages with the parent, not the child.
  • Teach younger students in a shared room with an adult at home; online, keep both cameras on.
  • Sign-up uses an OTP on your phone or email, plus a government photo ID reviewed by our team.
  • Uneasy about a visit? Leave, report it to NXTutors with Safeguarding in the message, and call 112 first if it is an emergency.

Read the safeguarding policy and how the ID check works.

Why tutors choose NXTutors

What is different from a directory listing or a tuition bureau.

  • You set your fee

Your fee per class is on your profile, and families see it before the demo, so there is no haggling after a good class.

  • Matched, nearest first

Each request goes to two or three tutors who fit it, nearest first, not to a long list of people chasing the same family.

  • Demo first

The first class is a free demo. Families decide after meeting you, not from a phone call or a price list.

  • No made-up leads

We never show invented requests. The only request details on these pages are real and anonymised, and only once there are three or more.

  • An ID check for everyone

Every tutor who joins goes through the same ID check. Real tutors who pass carry the Verified badge; sample profiles are always labelled.

  • AI-first, with real teachers

Parents can ask NXT AI about your profile and compare tutors side by side. The teaching is always yours.

Tutor plans and what each includes

Tutor plans are listed on our pricing page with what each one includes. Read them before you apply; we do not quote prices on this page. Tutors are independent: you set your own fee, and families pay you for the classes they take.

Questions from tutors

How do tuition requests in Shillong reach tutors?

Through a parent's request form: class, board, subjects, locality, landmark and a choice of home, online or both. From that, NXTutors picks two or three tutors, nearest first, widening to the zone, the city and online. The localities and boards on your profile decide whether you are among them.

Can I live in Shillong and teach students in other states online?

Yes, if your profile includes online teaching. Requests for home lessons go to tutors near the family first, while online requests can come from any Indian city, so a Shillong tutor can mix a few local homes with students elsewhere in the country, all from one profile.

Which Shillong localities should I add to my profile?

The ones you could reach on a wet weekday evening without strain. Someone living in Nongthymmai might choose Malki, Laitumkhrah, Rynjah and Madanrting; someone in Mawprem might stay with Jaiaw, Mawkhar and Police Bazar. Fewer localities, kept reliably, serve families better than a long list.

What does the ID check involve for a Shillong tutor?

An OTP to your phone or email, then a review of your government photo ID by our team before families can see your profile. That establishes identity only, without any police or background check, and one ID can be linked to only one tutor account. Read /how-we-verify-tutors for each step in detail.

Is joining NXTutors as a tutor free?

Yes. Signing up and onboarding are free, and the Free plan gives you 160 lead credits a month. Paid plans (/pricing) are optional: they add visibility, AI tools and more credits, and no plan is a fee to apply for a tuition. What you charge per hour is your own decision and appears on your profile before a family books the free demo. Since parents may change tutor at no cost, steady preparation and punctual visits matter.

Can a woman tutor in Shillong keep home visits close to where she lives?

Yes. Home requests only follow the localities on your profile, so you could visit homes in Laitumkhrah and Malki alone and teach everyone else online. The free demo lets you meet the household first, and a regular timetable is agreed only after that meeting, on terms that suit you.

Which boards will I teach in Shillong?

The Meghalaya Board of School Education and CBSE cover most students, MBOSE through the SSLC in Class 10 and HSSLC in Class 12. ICSE and ISC appear in CISCE-affiliated schools; IB and IGCSE are mostly online. For MBOSE work, use the syllabuses, booklists and papers on mbose.in.

Can I teach the same Shillong student partly at home and partly online?

Yes. Switch on both modes and agree the split with the parent after the demo. A common pattern is weekly home visits during term with a session moved online on heavy-rain days, which keeps the routine steady when the hill roads are slow. Note the plan in your messages with the parent.
