Science tutor jobs in Shillong

Most science tuition in Shillong ends at a single milestone: the Class 10 paper, whether that is the MBOSE SSLC, the CBSE board or the ICSE. Up to that point science is one subject on the timetable, and families usually want one tutor who can move between electricity, chemical reactions and the human body in the same week. After it, students choose an HSSLC stream or its equivalent, and science splits into separate subjects. This page is about the years before the split.

Open tuition requests in Shillong for science

No open science requests in Shillong right now. New family requests appear here as they come in; join now so they can reach you.

If you teach school science and live within reach of a few Shillong localities, here is what the work looks like: which boards ask, where in the city it sits, what parents expect, and how to stand out at the free demo. NXTutors does not advertise vacancies; each request from a family is matched with two or three tutors, starting from the same locality and widening out to the zone, the city and online.

Who asks for science tutors in Shillong

For MBOSE students, the board's own documents are the starting point. The Meghalaya Board of School Education publishes syllabuses, booklists, sample question papers, previous years' papers and its academic calendar on mbose.in. A science tutor for an SSLC candidate teaches from the books on that booklist, practises on the board's past papers until the format is familiar, and checks every date against the board's notices. Because the SSLC is the first public examination most students sit, part of the job is calm exam technique: reading the question twice, labelling diagrams fully, and showing working in numericals.

CBSE students in the same neighbourhoods work from the NCERT textbooks, and their papers now reward applying an idea as much as recalling it. Case-based passages, assertion-reason items and questions set in everyday situations are common, so a tutor should use CBSE's sample papers and marking schemes, not only the chapter exercises. ICSE students take physics, chemistry and biology as separate papers in Class 10, with a wide syllabus and long answers; their tutor needs a revision plan that returns to older chapters regularly and makes room for practical and project work.

Middle-school requests, Classes 6 to 8, are usually about understanding rather than marks. A child might recite a definition of photosynthesis without being able to say where the plant gets its carbon, or confuse mass with weight. Short experiments with household items, questions that ask why, and careful diagrams fix most of this. Class 9 is the point where numericals in motion and the mole concept arrive, and the families who ask for help early in Class 9 give a tutor the most room to work.

Where in Shillong the work is

Shillong has no rail link, so tutors move by shared taxi, city bus or two-wheeler, and directions matter: locality, part of the locality, lane and a landmark. Mawlai & Pynthorumkhrah is a large northern zone where you should always confirm which Mawlai locality a family lives in, such as Mawlai Mawiong or Kynton Massar, and the nearest stop. Homes there and in Pynthorumkhrah and Nongmynsong often sit on slopes reached by steps. A science tutor living on that side, or in Jaiaw for the nearer parts of Mawlai, has the easiest evenings.

Laban & Upper Shillong suits tutors who know its parts; families usually name Lumparing, Madan Laban, Kench's Trace or Rilbong, and the market near the Last Stop is a handy meeting point. Laitumkhrah & Rynjah is linked by roads through Malki, Nongthymmai and Goraline, so several homes can be covered in one evening outside school hours. Police Bazar & Jaiaw is central and reachable from most of the city, though the market roads are crowded by day. On heavy monsoon evenings, a science revision session moved online keeps the week on track.

What families in Shillong expect

  • Confidence across physics, chemistry and biology up to Class 10, with honest notes on any weaker area.
  • Familiarity with the MBOSE booklist and previous papers, or CBSE NCERT and sample papers, or ICSE's three science papers.
  • Neat labelled diagrams, drawn from memory, for biology and physics topics.
  • Numericals taught with formula, substitution, units and a sense check every time.
  • Chemical equations balanced and explained, with the type of reaction named.
  • Weekly short tests and a brief note to the parent on what slipped.
  • Punctuality that accounts for hill roads, rain and school-hour traffic.

How to get picked

On your profile, keep science to what you can truly teach. A line such as "Science, Classes 6 to 10, MBOSE and CBSE; home lessons in Mawlai and Jaiaw, online across India" tells a parent everything they need in one glance. If you continue into Class 11 and 12 physics, chemistry or biology, list that separately. Mention whether you can travel on rainy evenings or prefer to switch online, since parents in Shillong plan around the weather.

For the demo, use the chapter the class is on and teach it properly, not as a showcase. Begin by asking the student to explain what they already know; you will hear the gap within a minute. Fix it with a simple example or sketch, then have the student apply it to a question from the board's own papers. If time allows, ask them to draw a labelled diagram without looking. Tell the parent which part of the syllabus worries you most and how you plan to handle it. For anything about payment, see how you get paid on the tutor terms page.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

Is SSLC science tutoring different from CBSE science tutoring?

The topics overlap, but the books and papers differ. Use the MBOSE booklist and past papers for SSLC students, and NCERT plus CBSE sample papers for CBSE students.

Do Shillong families ask for one tutor for all three sciences?

Up to Class 10, usually yes. If one area is weaker for you, say so; for ICSE students, some families prefer separate tutors for the separate papers.

How do I find homes in Mawlai on a first visit?

Ask for the exact locality, for example Mawlai Mawiong or Mawlai Nongpdeng, and the nearest stop such as Mawiong or Mawlai Pump. Many homes are reached by steps from the road.

Can I teach science online to students outside Meghalaya?

Yes. Online tutoring is open across India, so you can mix local home students with online ones elsewhere.

What should the first month of science tuition cover?

The current school chapter, plus a quick check of earlier gaps that block it. Plan a short test at the end of each chapter and share the results with the parent.
