Home Tuition in Aizawl: A Locality Guide by Zone
Aizawl is a city of ridges. Its localities, most of them called a veng, run along hilltops and slopes with deep valleys between them, from Durtlang on the highest point in the north down through the busy centre at Chanmari, Zarkawt and Dawrpui, and out to Tuikual, Luangmual, Khatla and Kulikawn. For home tuition, this shape decides a great deal. A tutor needs the locality, the building, the floor and the right entrance, and the most practical tutor is often the one living on the same side of the valley, not the one who looks closest on a map.
Below are the four NXTutors zones in Aizawl and their sixteen localities, with practical notes for getting a tutor to the right door on the first day.
Three habits that make a first visit easy
Three details save time on a first visit:
- Describe the floor and the entrance. Homes are mostly multi-storey buildings stepped into the hillside, so a family's floor may be above or below the road. Say which level the tutor should come to and whether stairs lead down or up from the road.
- Name the part of the locality. Many localities have named parts, such as Durtlang North and Durtlang Leitan, Ramhlun North and Ramhlun South, Tuikual North and Tuikual South, or the four parts of Zemabawk. The part, plus a nearby landmark, saves a search.
- Think about parking. Hill roads are narrow and a two-wheeler is easier to leave than a car. Tell the tutor where a scooter can stand.
Every journey across the city is by road, and busy junctions fill up at office hours. A fixed weekday slot that avoids the evening rush is the easiest one to keep.
| Zone | Part of the city | Localities here | First-visit tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Durtlang, Chaltlang & Bawngkawn | The northern ridge and the localities on the way into the city | Five | Mention the named part, such as North or South |
| Chanmari, Zarkawt & Dawrpui | The centre, around the main market and state offices | Three | Book outside shopping and office hours |
| Tuikual, Vaivakawn & Luangmual | The western belt and the outskirts at Tanhril | Four | Ask the tutor to confirm the route across the valley |
| Khatla, Mission Veng & Kulikawn | The southern localities | Four | Prefer a tutor from the same cluster for evening slots |
Durtlang, Chaltlang & Bawngkawn
The northern side of the city, from the hilltop at Durtlang to the localities closer to the centre. Durtlang and Chaltlang were separate villages until the growing city absorbed them by the early 1960s. See the Durtlang, Chaltlang & Bawngkawn zone page.
- Durtlang: the highest point in Aizawl, at 1,384 metres. Its ward also covers Durtlang North, Durtlang Leitan, Selesih, Zuangtui and Muanna Veng. Tutors from Bawngkawn and Chaltlang are the closest; allow extra time on the climb in heavy rain.
- Chaltlang: shares a ward with Chaltlang Lily Veng and Bawngkawn, and the academic wing of the state's Directorate of School Education has long been based here. Give the floor number and a landmark for the first class.
- Bawngkawn: includes Bawngkawn South and Bawngkawn West. Nearby tutors from Durtlang, Chaltlang, Ramhlun or Zemabawk avoid a cross-city ride; say which door to use.
- Ramhlun: a group of localities, Ramhlun North, Venglai, Vengthar, Sports Complex and South, listed with Laipuitlang. Tutors from Chaltlang, Bawngkawn or the central localities are within reach; share a phone number for the stairs.
- Zemabawk: made up of Zemabawk North, South, East and West, with Falkland and Thuampui in the same ward. Larger blocks may keep a visitor record, so mention the block name and any entry routine.
Chanmari, Zarkawt & Dawrpui
The middle of Aizawl, where shops, state offices and homes sit close together. See the Chanmari, Zarkawt & Dawrpui zone page.
- Chanmari: a central locality sharing a ward with Electric Veng and Zarkawt, with Chanmari West as a separate ward. Fix a slot outside the evening rush.
- Zarkawt: includes McDonald Hill, where the Directorate of School Education has its offices; the first high school in the Mizo hills opened here in February 1944. Tutors from Chanmari, Dawrpui, Khatla and Ramhlun can reach it, but avoid office opening and closing times.
- Dawrpui: home to Bara Bazar, the city's main shopping centre, in a ward with Saron Veng, Chhinga Veng and Tuithang Veng. Market roads are crowded much of the day, so expect the tutor to walk the last stretch from a parking spot.
Tuikual, Vaivakawn & Luangmual
The western belt beside the centre, reaching out to the edge of the city at Tanhril. See the Tuikual, Vaivakawn & Luangmual zone page.
- Tuikual: Tuikual North and Tuikual South, in a ward with Dinthar. Deep valleys separate one locality from the next, so a tutor from Tuikual, Dinthar, Vaivakawn or Dawrpui Vengthar is usually the practical match.
- Vaivakawn: in a ward with Dawrpui Vengthar and Kanan Veng, where the central localities meet the Luangmual side. Tutors can come from either direction; tell them which entrance to use.
- Luangmual: listed with Chawnpui, Zotlang and Zonuam, and in a ward with Tanhril and other outer localities. Tutors from Chawnpui, Zonuam, Vaivakawn or Tanhril suit regular classes; agree where to park.
- Tanhril: on the outskirts, with large institutional grounds beside family homes. Tutors from Luangmual or Chawnpui, or an online tutor for specialist subjects, are the practical choice. Check how visitors are admitted to staff housing before the demo.
Khatla, Mission Veng & Kulikawn
The southern localities, grouped in clusters that the district lists together. See the Khatla, Mission Veng & Kulikawn zone page.
- Khatla: a ward with Khatla South and Mission Venglang, with Khatla East next to Bungkawn, Maubawk and Lawipu. Families can treat these as one cluster when looking for a nearby tutor.
- Mission Veng: an old locality, with Mission Vengthlang, Salem Veng, Dam Veng and Venghnuai close by. Offices, institutions and homes sit side by side; tutors from Salem Veng, Venghnuai or Kulikawn are nearest.
- Bethlehem: Bethlehem Veng and Bethlehem Vengthlang, mainly residential, with Republic and Venghlui as the nearest neighbours. A tutor from the same cluster can keep a weekday timetable easily.
- Kulikawn: in a ward with Tlangnuam, Saikhamakawn, Melthum and Hlimen, and grouped with Thakthing. Tutors from these localities avoid a cross-city ride; give the entrance and floor for the first visit.
Boards and the rainy months
Aizawl families usually name one of two boards in a request: CBSE, or the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE), whose HSLC papers come at the end of Class 10 and HSSLC papers at the end of Class 12. Add the stream for Classes 11–12 so tutors know the syllabus; for ICSE, IB or IGCSE, an online tutor fills the gap. Official dates and notices are on mbse.edu.in. See Mizoram board tutors in Aizawl and CBSE home tutors in Aizawl.
Heavy rain is common between April and October. Leave a margin on rainy evenings and decide early which lessons can go online when the weather turns.
How NXTutors can help
Send the class, board, subject and locality. NXTutors replies with two or three matched tutors, looking first at those who live nearest you, then across your zone and the city, and then online. Fees show before the free demo class, and changing tutor later is free. For rates and how to plan weekly hours, read home tuition fees in Aizawl.

Frequently asked questions
How do tutors travel between Aizawl localities?
By road, mostly on their own scooter or motorbike, or by taxi. Busy junctions fill up at office hours, and tutors crossing from one side of the city to the other pass through the centre, so slots that avoid the evening rush are easier to keep.
What details does a tutor need for the first class?
Give the locality and its named part, such as Ramhlun North or Tuikual South, a nearby landmark, the building name and the floor. Say whether the tutor should use the road-level entrance or stairs to a lower one, and point out a spot for a two-wheeler. Sending a map location helps too.
Why is a tutor across the valley harder to book?
Aizawl's localities sit on ridges separated by deep valleys, so a tutor who looks close on a map may need a long way round by road. A tutor living on the same side of the hill can usually keep a fixed weekday slot more easily, which matters more than distance on a map.
Which localities have the widest choice of tutors?
The central localities, Chanmari, Zarkawt and Dawrpui, because most routes across Aizawl pass near them. On the northern ridge, the western belt and the southern clusters, tutors from neighbouring localities are the likeliest match, and online classes fill any subject gap that nearby tutors leave.
Do classes continue during the rainy months?
Heavy rain is common between April and October, and journeys on hill roads take longer on wet evenings. A simple approach is to teach one weekly class online during those months, or to switch any class online when the rain is very heavy. Agree this, and the online rate, before the season starts.
