Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Shimla children study under several boards, and it is common for one house to have a CBSE child and a sibling on the Himachal Pradesh board or ICSE. For the CBSE child, what a tutor must do in Class 7 looks very little like what is needed in Class 12, and the 2026-27 curriculum has brought new rules for Classes 9 and 10. Below you will find the stages, the new rules, the senior marks split, a side-by-side with the HP Board, a sensible weekly routine, notes on six localities and questions for the free demo. The guidance follows our authors' roles: Abhinandan Tiwary for Class 10 maths, Aaditya Kashyap for science.
| Class | Examined by | Where marks slip | What tuition should fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6–8 | School | Fractions, negative numbers, first equations; skimming science text | Solid number work and written steps every time |
| 9 | School (80 + 20) | Maths and science both get harder in the same year | Fortnightly tests and a decision on the Advanced papers |
| 10 | CBSE board (80) + school (20) | Unfamiliar applied questions; untidy layout | Timed sample papers checked against the official scheme |
| 11 | School | The leap in physics, chemistry and maths | Foundations for Class 12 laid early |
| 12 | CBSE board + practical or internal | Board revision squeezed by entrance preparation | A single timetable that serves both |
The pass mark for each Class 10 subject is 33%. A child who struggles suddenly in Class 9 has usually carried a gap from Class 7 or 8, which is why middle-school tuition earns most when it mends old gaps rather than running ahead of the school.
A shared Class 9 paper, with an optional extra. All Class 9 students now write the same 80-mark papers in maths and science. In addition, they may choose an Advanced paper in either subject or both. It lasts an hour, carries 25 marks of harder questions on additional content, and stays out of the aggregate; a result of 50% or above is noted on the marksheet. It is worth taking only when the main paper already feels easy.
The end of Basic and Standard. Students in Class 10 during 2026-27 are the final batch to choose between the two maths levels.
Two chances at Class 10. Everyone sits the first board exam. Those who pass may return for a second sitting to raise their marks in as many as three subjects from science, maths, social science and languages. Prepare as though the first sitting is the only one.
Competency-based papers. Roughly half of each secondary paper now uses cases, sources and data. The third language is marked by the school, with no board paper. Our Class 10 maths plan and science notes work chapter by chapter through NCERT, and the Class 10 maths tutor page explains our matching.
In physics, chemistry and biology, CBSE gives 70 marks to the theory paper and 30 to practical work. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (a student takes one or the other), accountancy, economics and business studies are split 80 for theory and 20 for internal assessment. For a science student, that means nearly a third of each subject is decided by the practical file, the experiments and the viva, and a tutor who ignores them is ignoring marks. The board paper spans the full Class 12 syllabus, and its layout is adjusted a little every year through the sample paper. For the board year, see our physics, chemistry and maths guides and the Class 12 maths tutor page.
Some Shimla students change between CBSE and the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education, and some homes have a child on each. The content often overlaps: the board's Class 10 English uses the same two readers, First Flight and Footprints without Feet, in its own edition, and its Plus Two chemistry lists the same ten chapters CBSE examines. The marks and paper layouts are where the boards part ways.
| Point | CBSE | HP Board (from hpbose.org) |
|---|---|---|
| Class 10 science | 80-mark board paper plus 20 assessed in school | 60-mark theory paper in the 2026-27 model paper, plus a 20-mark practical; books Vigyan and Science from the board |
| Class 12 physics and chemistry | 70 theory, 30 practical | 60 theory, 20 practical |
| Objective questions | Follow the layout of the current CBSE sample paper | Section A of the Class 10 maths and English model papers is answered on an OMR sheet |
| Language of the paper | Confirm the medium with the school | Model papers printed in English and Hindi |
| Marking guidance | Sample papers and marking schemes | Model papers and step-wise marking files |
| Class 10 rules | Two-exam system and Class 9 Advanced papers | Specific to CBSE; check the HP Board's own notices |

When JEE or NEET preparation is running, board subjects tend to vanish from the timetable. Keep these three in place every week:
Entrance families can also read the national JEE and NEET home tutor pages.
For children below Class 9, an adult beside them is worth more than any screen. Older students still learn maths and science most effectively face to face, but English, social science and revision checks travel well online. In the hills a screen has one more use: on a snowy winter evening or a monsoon downpour, the lesson simply moves online at its usual time. A common pattern is one visit plus one online hour each week; see online tutors for Shimla.
Subject pages for the city: maths, science up to Class 10, physics and chemistry for the senior years, and English.
| Locality | Zone | Access and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Lakkar Bazar | Ridge, Lakkar Bazar and Jakhu | Compact old market with homes above the shops; most of the centre is walkable, so central tutors often arrive on foot. Busy in the evenings, so an afternoon slot works better. |
| Dhalli | Sanjauli and Dhalli | The city's eastern end on the highway; tutors from Sanjauli come through the tunnel. Online helps when a specialist lives on the western side. |
| New Shimla | Chhota Shimla, Kasumpti and New Shimla | Planned phases and numbered sectors; give the sector, block and flat number and check the colony gate register. |
| Vikasnagar | Chhota Shimla, Kasumpti and New Shimla | Flats behind building gates or houses down lanes and steps; late-afternoon and evening lessons usually start on time. |
| Boileauganj | Boileauganj, Summer Hill and Totu | A congested junction with short parking; tutors often come by bus or walk the last stretch. Avoid office and school hours. |
| Totu | Boileauganj, Summer Hill and Totu | A western suburb served by Jutogh station; check entry rules near the cantonment, and allow for fog in the monsoon. |
The four zone pages, Ridge, Lakkar Bazar and Jakhu, Sanjauli and Dhalli, Chhota Shimla, Kasumpti and New Shimla and Boileauganj, Summer Hill and Totu, list every locality, as does the Shimla home tutors page.
Unconvinced? Ask for a demo with someone else from the shortlist; a change of tutor later costs nothing either. More checks are in the demo class checklist.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Rates belong to the tutors, and each appears on your shortlist ahead of the demo; the pricing guide and Shimla home tuition fees explain the factors.
Tell us the class, the subjects, when school ends and where you live, with a landmark. Two or three matched tutors come back to you, and your first class is a free demo. Everyone who joins as a tutor passes an ID check first. You can also look through tutor profiles or start with the Shimla home tuition guide. Teachers can find students through Shimla tuition jobs.

It is an extra one-hour, 25-mark paper of harder questions on additional content, available in maths, science or both from 2026-27. It is left out of the aggregate, and the marksheet notes a score of 50% or above. Choose it only if the main 80-mark paper already feels comfortable.
Every Class 10 student writes the first sitting. Anyone who passes can return for the second to raise marks in as many as three subjects chosen from science, maths, social science and languages. Treat the first sitting as decisive, and watch cbse.gov.in for the dates.
Content overlaps more than people expect; Class 10 English uses the same two readers and Plus Two chemistry the same ten chapters. Marks differ: the HP Board's Plus Two physics and chemistry carry 60 theory and 20 practical marks against CBSE's 70 and 30, and its objective sections may use an OMR sheet.
Up to about Class 8, often yes. From Class 9, maths and science usually need subject tutors, and in Classes 11 and 12 physics, chemistry and maths are usually matched separately. We can suggest a small team, each tutor with a fee you see before the demo.
We match across the city's four zones: Ridge, Lakkar Bazar and Jakhu; Sanjauli and Dhalli; Chhota Shimla, Kasumpti and New Shimla; and Boileauganj, Summer Hill and Totu. Nearest tutors come first, and if nobody suitable can reach you at your hour, we suggest online or mixed lessons.
Yes, especially as a backup. Many families keep a home tutor and move lessons online on snow days or heavy-rain evenings at the usual time. English, social science and revision suit a screen well; for maths and science, the tutor needs a clear view of the notebook.
