CBSE home tutors in Surat: NCERT, the new Class 9 and 10 rules, and tutors on your side of the Tapi

Requests from Surat come under four boards, and for each one we ask about the medium of instruction as well, because a child's textbook language matters as much as the board. For CBSE that usually means a family wants a tutor who teaches from NCERT, knows this year's sample papers, and can reach the house without crossing the river at the worst hour. This page sets out how CBSE compares with GSEB, what each class from 6 to 12 involves under the 2026-27 curriculum, which subjects Surat parents most often need help with, and how tutors travel to each zone. Abhinandan Tiwary writes on Class 10 CBSE and ICSE maths, and Aaditya Kashyap on CBSE and ICSE science.

Board and medium: CBSE compared with GSEB

Many Surat students study under GSEB, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, which conducts the state's public exams at the end of Class 10 and Class 12, in Gujarati, English or another medium. CBSE differs in ways a tutor has to plan for:

  • Textbooks: CBSE papers grow out of NCERT books; GSEB schools follow the textbooks the state prescribes.
  • Question style: a growing part of each CBSE paper asks students to use an idea in an unfamiliar setting, through case-based and assertion–reason items. Roughly half of a secondary paper is now of this competency-focused kind.
  • Marking: CBSE publishes a sample paper and marking scheme each year, and method earns marks, so a student must set out every step.
  • Calendar: CBSE's academic year opens in April; GSEB schools publish their own calendars.

The medium matters most when a child changes board. A Gujarati-medium student moving to English textbooks often needs help with vocabulary as much as with the subject, and a tutor who can bridge both languages for the first weeks saves a lot of frustration. For GSEB's own pattern and dates, follow the board's circulars.

Class by class: what to expect and how much tuition

CBSE in Surat from Class 6 to Class 12
ClassThe exam that countsCommon sticking pointA sensible weekly plan
6–8School examsFractions, negative numbers, reading a science explanation closelyOne or two sessions
9School annual paper of 80 marks, plus 20 internalThe sharp step up in maths and scienceTwo sessions
10CBSE board paper of 80, plus 20 school marksCase-based questions; keeping every subject on trackTwo or three sessions
11School examsNew depth in physics, chemistry and maths; accountancy basicsOne specialist per hard subject
12Board papers on the full Class 12 syllabus, plus practicals or internal marksComplete answers under time; practical filesSpecialists, regular sample papers

Whatever is left shaky in Class 9 shows again in the board year, so the easiest time to fix a gap is a year early. In Classes 6 to 8, one patient session a week on number sense and reading usually does more than daily drilling.

The 2026-27 rules for Classes 9 and 10

What changed, and what it means for tuition
ChangeWhat CBSE saysWhat to do
Common Class 9 paperOne maths and one science syllabus for all, each examined on an 80-mark paperSecure NCERT content first, then practise application questions
Optional Advanced papers25 marks, one hour, only higher-order questions; not added to the aggregate; 50% or more noted on the marksheetChoose Advanced only in a subject your child already enjoys
Basic and Standard mathsBeing discontinued, except for the 2026-27 Class 10 batchCheck which scheme applies to your child's batch
Third languageCompulsory for the transition batches; assessed by the school, no board paper; must be passedKeep a regular slot for it; it rarely needs a tutor
Two Class 10 board examsThe first is compulsory; the second lets a student who has passed try to improve up to three of science, maths, social science and languagesTreat the first as the real exam

In each major Class 10 subject the board paper carries 80 marks and school internal assessment 20, with 33% needed to pass. Our Class 10 maths and Class 9 science pages go into the papers.

Training for competency questions

The competency-focused part of a CBSE paper is where students who "know the chapter" still drop marks. These questions come as case studies, sources, tables of data, assertion–reason pairs or everyday situations, and the student has to work out which idea applies before doing anything else. A tutor should bring one of these into almost every session from Class 9 onwards: read the passage together, ask the student to name the concept being tested, then let them write the answer in full and check it against the official marking scheme. NCERT exercises still come first, because the board stays within the textbooks, but finishing them is the start of preparation, not the end. Over a term, keep a short record of which question types cause trouble, so revision can target them.

Classes 11 and 12: start strong in Class 11

Class 11 lays the ground for everything after, so it deserves as much effort as Class 12. Under the 2026-27 senior curriculum, physics, chemistry and biology each carry 70 theory marks and 30 practical; Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, only one of which may be taken, carries 80 plus 20 internal, as do accountancy, economics and business studies. CBSE says senior papers will include more questions set in real situations. Science students in Surat often prepare for JEE or NEET too; a board tutor then guards NCERT wording, full answers and the practical file, while coaching handles speed. See JEE home tutors in Surat and NEET home tutors in Surat.

Subjects Surat families usually ask for

Senior science students tend to find physics and maths hardest, and commerce students accountancy. Up to Class 10, maths and science lead the requests. Our Surat pages: maths, science, physics, chemistry, biology and English, the last especially useful after a move from Gujarati-medium study. For reading, try Class 10 science notes and Class 12 organic and inorganic chemistry.

How tutors reach each part of Surat

The metro is still being built, so tutors come by two-wheeler, auto or Sitilink bus, and the Tapi bridges and shift traffic decide what is realistic. Mention your nearest BRTS stop in the request if you have one, since tutors who travel by bus can then be included.

Home tuition or online?

For maths and science up to Class 10, a tutor at the table usually works well: they watch the working, check the notebook and catch the missing steps CBSE marking penalises. CBSE tutors are not hard to find on either bank, so most families can keep at least one home session a week. Online sessions are most useful for a senior specialist who lives across the river, for short doubt sessions in the board months, and during Navratri and the Diwali holidays, when evening routines across Gujarat change. Many families mix the two with the same tutor. Our home versus online tutor comparison and the Surat tuition guide help with the choice.

What to look for in the demo class

  1. The current sample paper: which one is the tutor using, and do they know its marking scheme?
  2. An assertion–reason or case question: does the tutor teach the reading as well as the concept?
  3. Language: for a child from Gujarati-medium study, can they explain key terms clearly in both languages at first?
  4. Board habits: if most of their students are GSEB, how do they adapt to NCERT and CBSE marking?
  5. Timing: when will they come, given the bridges and shift traffic on your side of the city?

CBSE Home Tutor in Surat (Classes 6–12): common questions

Does crossing the Tapi raise a CBSE home tutor's fee in Surat?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. In Surat, the class, the number of subjects and whether the tutor must cross the Tapi move the fee. Each fee is shown before the demo.

How do I get CBSE home tutors on my side of the Tapi in Surat?

To get CBSE home tutors on your side of the Tapi in Surat, tell us the class, subjects, medium, your locality and free slots. Mention your nearest BRTS stop so tutors who travel by bus are included. We shortlist two or three matched tutors, each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.

Why does NXTutors ask Surat CBSE families about the medium of instruction?

We ask Surat CBSE families about the medium because the tutor should use the same terms as your child's textbook. Many Surat students study under GSEB in Gujarati, English or another medium, and a Gujarati-medium child moving to English NCERT books often needs vocabulary help as much as subject help.

How does CBSE differ from GSEB for a Surat child?

For a Surat child, CBSE papers grow out of NCERT books, while GSEB schools follow state-prescribed textbooks. Roughly half of a CBSE secondary paper is competency-focused, CBSE publishes a sample paper and marking scheme each year, and its academic year opens in April. For GSEB's own pattern and dates, follow the board's circulars.

Should a Surat family pick CBSE or the Gujarat board for their child?

A Surat family should pick between CBSE and the Gujarat board by the medium, future plans and how their child learns; neither suits every child. CBSE uses NCERT books and competency-style questions, while GSEB follows state textbooks in Gujarati, English or another medium. For a fuller comparison, see our CBSE, ICSE, IB or IGCSE guide.

What changed in CBSE Class 9 maths and science for Surat students from 2026-27?

From 2026-27, Surat CBSE Class 9 students take one common maths and science syllabus, each on an 80-mark paper. An optional one-hour, 25-mark Advanced paper of higher-order questions is available in either or both. It stays out of the aggregate, but 50% or more is noted on the marksheet.

If a Surat Class 10 student misses three subjects in the first CBSE exam, can they sit the second?

No, a Surat Class 10 student who missed three or more subjects in the first CBSE board exam cannot sit the second. The first is compulsory; the optional second lets a student who passed improve up to three of science, maths, social science and languages. Treat the first as the real exam.

What job does a CBSE board tutor do for a Surat student already in entrance coaching?

For a Surat student already in entrance coaching, a CBSE board tutor guards the board side while coaching builds speed. That means NCERT wording, complete written answers and practical files. Fix the slot around coaching days and shift traffic, with online sessions for weeks when coaching runs late.

When should a Surat CBSE student choose home or online tuition?

A Surat CBSE student in maths and science up to Class 10 usually gains most from home tuition, where the tutor sees the working. Online suits senior specialists across the river, doubt sessions near the boards, and Navratri and Diwali weeks when evening routines change. Many families mix one of each with the same tutor.

How should a Surat tutor train CBSE students for competency questions?

A Surat tutor should bring one CBSE competency question into almost every session from Class 9. Read the case or source together, name the concept tested, then write the answer in full and check it against the marking scheme. NCERT exercises still come first, and a record of troublesome question types guides revision.

Class by class, how often should a Surat CBSE child see a tutor each week?

A Surat CBSE student in Classes 6 to 8 usually needs one or two sessions a week, Class 9 two, and Class 10 two or three. In Classes 11 and 12, one specialist per hard subject works better, with regular sample papers in Class 12. Gaps left in Class 9 show again in the board year.
