A Bhubaneswar student aiming at engineering usually carries two loads at once. One is the school course, which may be the Council of Higher Secondary Education's +2 science programme, CBSE or ISC. The other is the NTA syllabus for JEE (Main), and for the strongest candidates JEE (Advanced). The NTA conducts JEE (Main). According to its 2026 bulletin, Paper 1 was a three-hour computer test of 75 questions worth 300 marks: 25 in each of mathematics, physics and chemistry, made up of 20 multiple-choice and 5 numerical-answer questions. Four marks were given for a correct answer and one taken away for a wrong one, in both kinds. There were two sessions, in January and April, and the bulletin set no age limit. Candidates who ranked high enough on Paper 1 could sit JEE (Advanced), which the IITs ran as two compulsory three-hour papers in English and Hindi, with at most two attempts in consecutive years. Rules move each year, so confirm them on jeemain.nta.nic.in and jeeadv.ac.in before you plan around them.
Odisha also has its own entrance body. The Odisha Joint Entrance Examination committee, which works under the state's Skill Development and Technical Education Department, holds common entrance examinations and counselling for admission to a range of professional courses in the state. Whatever the brief, ask the tutor to keep a running list of every question your child got wrong, with the reason: concept gap, careless slip, or time. That list, not the number of hours, tells you whether tuition is working.
The Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha, whose office is in Bhubaneswar, sets the +2 syllabus and conducts the examinations. Its subject files for physics, chemistry and mathematics, published as the rationalised 2023 syllabus, show a course that runs close to the NTA content, which helps a JEE student; the gap is in how the papers are set.

The council's mathematics question design puts 44 of the 80 marks on remembering and understanding, 20 on applying and 16 on analysing, evaluating and creating, with no overall choice but internal choice in about a third of the paper. A student who scores well on that paper can still struggle with JEE, where almost every question is an application. The fix is not more theory but more unseen problems under a clock. Equally, a student who lives on entrance practice must write full working before the board paper, because the council marks steps.
For CBSE students the NCERT match is the same, and for ISC students the chapter order differs, so ask the tutor to map the school's order against the NTA list in the first fortnight.
