In Bhubaneswar a CBSE family is surrounded by the state's own system. The Board of Secondary Education, Odisha runs the Class 10 examination in state schools, and the Council of Higher Secondary Education runs the +2 papers, with its office in the city. A child may move from one system to the other at Class 11, and a tutor who knows only one of them can mislead. This page covers what CBSE asks for at each stage under the 2026-27 curriculum, how its marks compare with the Odisha boards, how a tutor fits around school and any coaching, and how tutors get to each part of a city with no metro. Class 10 maths notes reflect Abhinandan Tiwary's role teaching Class 10 CBSE and ICSE maths, and science notes reflect Aaditya Kashyap's role in CBSE and ICSE science.
Both boards spread marks across the year, but in different shapes. A tutor working with a Bhubaneswar child should know both, because classmates, cousins and neighbours may well be on the other one.
| Feature | CBSE | BSE Odisha |
|---|---|---|
| Main subjects | Board paper of 80 marks plus 20 internal marks | Four internal assessments of 10 marks, a 20-mark "aspirational component" each term, a half-yearly and an annual examination of 100 marks |
| Board examinations | Two in Class 10; the first is compulsory, the second can raise marks in up to three subjects | The annual examination at the end of the session, with a supplementary examination later in the year |
| Languages | A third language assessed by the school in the transition years | First Language Odia, Second Language English and a third language in the syllabus list |
| Question style | About half of each paper competency-based: cases, sources, data | Objective and descriptive parts; take the current pattern from bseodisha.ac.in |
The Odisha Board (BSE and CHSE) tutors page sets out the state boards in detail.
| Class | What usually goes wrong | What a tutor should do |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 8 | Fractions, negative numbers and early algebra half understood; science learned as words | One or two sessions a week to close gaps, with reading practice in science |
| 9 | A jump in algebra, geometry proofs and physics numericals | Build method and written steps; decide whether an Advanced paper makes sense |
| 10 | Board pressure, competency questions, too little timed writing | Chapter tests through the year, sample papers from the winter, error log |
| 11 | Stream subjects far harder than Class 10; entrance coaching starts | Secure physics and maths foundations before the year runs away |
| 12 | Board, practicals and entrance all at once | A written plan that serves the board paper first and the entrance alongside |
The secondary curriculum keeps the 80 + 20 split in the main subjects and a pass mark of 33%. In Class 9 every student sits a common maths paper and a common science paper. In addition, a student may opt for an Advanced paper in one or both: 25 marks, one hour, higher-order questions only. It is not added to the aggregate, though a score of 50% or more is recorded on the marksheet. Choose it only for a subject your child already enjoys; it is not a rescue plan. The Basic and Standard maths options are being retired, and the 2026-27 Class 10 batch is the last to finish under them.
Class 10 now offers two board examinations. Every student takes the first, and one who passes may return for the second to improve up to three of science, maths, social science and the languages. Treat the first as the real examination, not a practice run. About half of each paper is competency-based, built on a passage, a data set or a situation, which is where students who only learned answers lose marks. Our Class 10 maths preparation guide and Class 10 science notes go chapter by chapter, and the Class 10 maths tutor page explains what to expect.
The Class 12 paper covers the whole Class 12 syllabus, and the design changes a little each year with the sample paper, so the tutor should be working from the current one. For the subjects themselves, see our Bhubaneswar pages for maths, physics, chemistry and biology, and the national guides to Class 12 physics and calculus and algebra. Students also preparing for entrance exams should read the JEE and NEET pages for the city.
A student may finish Class 10 under CBSE and continue in a +2 course under the council, or move the other way after the state's Class 10 examination. Either move is manageable with a tutor who plans the first term carefully.
The guide to choosing a board and stream helps with the decision itself.
Tuition should fill gaps, not the whole week. For a Class 10 student, two sessions are usually enough through the autumn: one for maths, one for science, each ending with a short timed question. From the winter, a third slot for a full sample paper and its review earns its place. For Classes 11 and 12, one session per difficult subject, plus a fortnightly paper, keeps both the board and any entrance plan moving.
In Bhubaneswar, set those slots with the roads in mind. A class that begins just as offices close on Nandankanan Road or near the highway will start late every week. An hour before the rush, or a weekend morning, is easier to keep, and a short online check-in midweek can replace a second journey.
No metro runs in the city, so most tutors ride a two-wheeler or drive, and a few use the railway stations and an auto. We look first at tutors who live near you, then across your zone, then the wider city; online tutors from elsewhere fill gaps.
Every locality is on the Bhubaneswar home tutors page, grouped by zone, including North Bhubaneswar and South-West Bhubaneswar.
For Classes 6 to 10, a tutor at the table usually works better: younger students drift on a screen, and a geometry construction or a chemical equation is easier to correct in the notebook. In Classes 11 and 12, when school, practicals and coaching crowd the week, many families keep one home session for maths or physics and move the other subjects online. Online also suits a specialist who lives on the far side of the city. The online tutors for Bhubaneswar page explains how to set it up.
We arrange the next demo if the fit is wrong, and a later switch is free. See the demo class checklist.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For a Bhubaneswar Class 10 student, CBSE uses an 80-mark board paper plus 20 internal marks. BSE Odisha uses internal tests, an aspirational component each term, a half-yearly and a 100-mark annual examination. CBSE also offers two board exams, the first compulsory. Take the current state pattern from bseodisha.ac.in.
Yes, a CBSE Class 10 student in Bhubaneswar who passes the compulsory first board exam may sit a second one to raise marks. That second exam covers up to three of science, maths, social science and the languages. Treat the first as the real examination, not a practice run. About half of each paper is competency-based, built on passages, data or situations.
The CBSE Class 9 Advanced paper suits a Bhubaneswar child only in a subject that already comes easily. It is 25 marks in one hour of higher-order questions, not added to the aggregate, though a score of 50% or more is recorded on the marksheet. A struggling student gains more from securing the common paper.
For CBSE Class 12 students in Bhubaneswar, physics, chemistry and biology carry 70 written marks plus 30 practical. Maths or Applied Maths, accountancy, economics and business studies carry 80 theory plus 20 internal. The Class 12 paper covers the whole syllabus, so the tutor should work from the current sample paper and keep the practical file current.
A tutor helps a Bhubaneswar student moving from BSE Odisha to CBSE Class 11 by mapping the state syllabus against NCERT wording and introducing competency-style questions early. If science was read in Odia, a chapter-by-chapter list of English terms starts in month one. Two or three sessions a week in the first term usually settle the change.
Yes, a CBSE Class 10 student in Bhubaneswar can move to the council's +2 science with a tutor who plans the first term. Content is familiar: the council's mathematics lists NCERT textbooks, and its physics and chemistry carry 70 theory and 30 practical marks. The paper differs, so collect the council's question pattern early and practise to it.
Set CBSE tuition in Bhubaneswar an hour before the office rush on Nandankanan Road or near the highway, or on a weekend morning, so classes start on time. For Class 10, two weekly sessions, maths and science, usually suffice through autumn, with a third added in winter for a timed sample paper. A short online midweek check-in can save a journey.
Broadly yes: for CBSE Classes 6 to 10 in Bhubaneswar, a tutor at the table usually works better. Younger students drift on screen, and constructions are easier to correct in the notebook. In Classes 11 and 12, many families keep one home session for maths or physics and move other subjects online, which also suits far-side specialists.
