Home Tuition in Bhubaneswar: Old Town to Patia, Area by Area
Bhubaneswar is two cities layered together. The old temple town around the Lingaraja temple and the Bindusagar tank was here for centuries before the foundation of the new capital was laid on 13 April 1948. The planned capital was then built in numbered units, each with its own high school, shopping centre, dispensary and play areas. Later, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority opened up colonies to the north and west, and former villages such as Patia, Mancheswar and Jagamara were drawn into the city.
For a home tutor, that history shows up at the door: plotted houses on numbered lanes in one locality, a gate register at an apartment tower in the next, narrow temple lanes in a third. This guide covers the five NXTutors zones and every locality in them: the homes, the route in and the easiest class times.
How do tutors move around Bhubaneswar?
No metro runs in Bhubaneswar, so lessons depend on road travel: a tutor's own scooter or motorbike, a car, an auto or e-rickshaw, or a city bus. Rail matters for tutors coming from the edges: Bhubaneswar station, opened in 1896, is the headquarters station of the East Coast Railway zone, Bhubaneswar New station opened in July 2018 on the northern side, and smaller stations at Patia, Vani Vihar, Mancheswar and Lingaraj Temple Road serve their own neighbourhoods. In the west, the Baramunda bus terminal, opened in March 2024, is the largest in Odisha.
| Zone | Main roads in | Nearest stations | Usual arrival |
|---|---|---|---|
| North (Patia & Chandrasekharpur) | Nandankanan Road, Niladri Vihar Road | Patia, Bhubaneswar New | Doorstep at plotted houses; sign-in at apartment buildings |
| Central & East (Saheed Nagar & Rasulgarh) | Janpath, the Cuttack-Puri road, National Highway 16 | Vani Vihar, Mancheswar, Bhubaneswar | Mostly flats with a guard; houses in the inner lanes |
| West (Nayapalli & Jaydev Vihar) | National Highway 16, Nandankanan Road, Bidyut Marg | Bhubaneswar, Vani Vihar, Lingaraj Temple Road | Mixed: colony houses and gated apartment complexes |
| South (Old Town & Bapuji Nagar) | Janpath, Rajpath, Udyan Marg, Ekamra Marg | Bhubaneswar, Lingaraj Temple Road | Doorstep in the older lanes; registers at newer buildings |
| South-West (Khandagiri & Patrapada) | National Highway 16, the Khandagiri-Chandaka road, Patrapada Main Road | Bhubaneswar, Lingaraj Temple Road | Gate security at new complexes; doorstep on plotted streets |
North Bhubaneswar: Patia and Chandrasekharpur
Patia, Chandrasekharpur and Mancheswar were villages among forest and farmland until the city grew northwards. Chandrasekharpur now takes in colonies such as Damana, Infocity and Niladri Vihar, with IT offices close to the homes.
- Patia: apartment complexes and independent houses, with plots and villas still being built. Nandankanan Road is the spine of the locality. Complexes register visitors at the gate; plotted lanes allow doorstep arrival.
- Chandrasekharpur: low-rise flats, builder floors and plotted houses across named colonies. Give the colony, lane and house or block number before the first class.
- Sailashree Vihar: a planned colony on a grid of numbered plots, with houses and two- to four-bedroom flats. A plot number and a landmark are usually enough.
Central and East Bhubaneswar: Saheed Nagar and Rasulgarh
Saheed Nagar was planned around 1960 as the tenth unit of the capital. East of the railway line, Rasulgarh and Mancheswar mix homes with the Mancheswar Industrial Estate, which is connected to National Highway 16 and its own station.
- Saheed Nagar: a shopping district along Janpath with houses and flats in the inner lanes. Parking on Janpath is limited, so give a lane landmark. Vani Vihar station lets tutors from Rasulgarh cross the tracks.
- Satya Nagar: mostly flats in apartment buildings, with shops on the main roads. Tell the building guard the tutor's name and flat number in advance.
- Kharavela Nagar: Unit 3 of the planned capital, with flats among markets, hotels and offices. Bhubaneswar station is close for tutors who come by train.
- Rasulgarh: apartments, builder floors and houses around the busy square on the Cuttack-Puri road. A tutor from Saheed Nagar or Satya Nagar can reach most homes easily. The square carries heavy traffic at office hours.
- Mancheswar: residential colonies around the industrial estate. Share the colony name and a landmark away from the factory gates. Goods traffic is heaviest in working hours, so early-evening or weekend classes are simpler.
- Laxmisagar: one- to three-bedroom flats and older lane homes between the Rasulgarh and Kalpana squares. Autos and cabs are easy to find, which helps tutors who do not drive.
West Bhubaneswar: Nayapalli and Jaydev Vihar
The western colonies were developed by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority beyond the original units. Ekamra Kanan, the city's largest park and botanical garden, was created in Nayapalli in 1985, and the main city stadium on Bidyut Marg is nearby. IRC Village began as cottages for delegates to the Indian Roads Congress session of 1982.
- Nayapalli: apartments, independent houses and builder floors among many surrounding colonies, so there is a large pool of possible tutors within a short ride.
- Jaydev Vihar: houses and low- to mid-rise apartment buildings around a square of hotels and offices. Nandankanan Road links it with the northern colonies, so tutors can come from either side.
- Acharya Vihar: a central locality inside the 1968 master-plan area, with houses and flats. Houses allow doorstep arrival; apartments may ask for a sign-in.
- IRC Village: planned streets with parks, apartment complexes and houses. A house number and a nearby park as a landmark are enough.
- Baramunda: mostly two- and three-bedroom flats near the bus terminal, with houses in the surrounding colonies. City buses make it easy to reach without a vehicle. Give a landmark away from the terminal entrance.
South Bhubaneswar: Old Town and Bapuji Nagar
This is the original Bhubaneswar. Apart from BJB Nagar, its localities, including Old Town, Samantarapur and Kapileswar, were villages, while Bapuji Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Kharavela Nagar and Bhouma Nagar are Units 1 to 4 of the planned capital. The Lingaraja temple's present form dates from the last decade of the eleventh century.
- Old Town: older houses in narrow lanes and newer apartment buildings around the temples and the Bindusagar tank. A two-wheeler or e-rickshaw is easier than a car. Share a temple or lane landmark and a phone number before the first class.
- Samantarapur: a former village, now Ward No. 59 of the municipal corporation, with three- and four-bedroom flats and residential plots. The older lanes suit a two-wheeler, and newer buildings ask visitors to sign in.
- Bapuji Nagar: Unit 1, reached by Janpath, Rajpath and Udyan Marg, with flats and older homes around the Unit 1 market. Bhubaneswar station is very close. Give a residential lane as the landmark, since parking near the market is limited.
- Pokhariput: plotted homes and newer flats on the southern fringe near the airport. On plotted lanes the tutor comes straight to the door. A fixed early-evening slot with a tutor from the southern side is the practical choice.
South-West Bhubaneswar: Khandagiri and Patrapada
The Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, cut into two adjacent hills in the second or first century BCE, give this zone its landmark. Around them, western Bhubaneswar has grown into a newer mix of planned colonies, unplanned colonies and former villages, with Patrapada, Kalinga Nagar and Pokhariput on its fringes.
- Khandagiri: houses and two- and three-bedroom flats around the hill. Khandagiri Square is a major stop on the city bus network, and a bus depot stands nearby. The square fills up on weekends when visitors come to the caves, so weekday evenings are easier.
- Jagamara: flats, villas, plots and builder floors between Khandagiri and the airport side. Bus routes through Khandagiri Square and Baramunda help tutors without a vehicle. A lane name and a landmark are enough on plotted streets.
- Kalinga Nagar: builder floors and multi-storey apartment buildings, with newer projects still coming up and a large public park in the K-8 sector. Share the sector, building and floor before the first visit, as gates check visitors.
- Patrapada: a growing residential and commercial area along National Highway 16, with new apartment complexes, plots and some villas. Register the tutor at the gate in advance with the complex name and tower number. Most tutors arrive by two-wheeler or car.
Boards, classes and timing across the city
Bhubaneswar families study under the state system, where the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha (BSE Odisha) conducts the Class 10 examination and the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha (CHSE) covers Classes 11 and 12, as well as CBSE and CISCE (ICSE and ISC); a smaller number need IB or IGCSE support. Put the board in your request and, for BSE Odisha or CHSE, the language your child answers papers in, Odia or English. Check syllabus details on the board's official website.
A few dates shape the timetable. The Lingaraja temple's annual Rukuna Ratha Yatra on Ashokashtami brings crowds to Old Town and Samantarapur, so families there often switch that day to an online session. Elsewhere, a fixed slot outside office hours on the main roads keeps a weekly class on time.
How NXTutors can help
Send us your child's class, board and subjects with your locality. NXTutors returns two or three matched tutors, looking first among those who live closest, then across your zone and the city, then online. Fees are shown up front, the opening demo class is free, and a later change of tutor costs nothing. To plan the spend, see our guide to home tuition fees in Bhubaneswar.
Browse maths home tutors in Bhubaneswar, science, physics, chemistry, biology or English; exam and board pages for JEE, NEET, CBSE, ICSE and the Odisha board; or online tutors. Every locality is on home tutors across Bhubaneswar, and tutors who live in the city can see tuition jobs in Bhubaneswar.
Frequently asked questions
With no metro, how do tutors reach homes in Bhubaneswar?
Mostly by scooter or motorbike, otherwise by car, auto, e-rickshaw or the city buses running through Baramunda and Khandagiri Square. A tutor based on the outskirts may ride a train to Bhubaneswar, Patia, Vani Vihar or Lingaraj Temple Road and finish by auto. Choosing someone from your own zone keeps the journey easy.
Which parts of Bhubaneswar have the most plotted houses?
The planned colonies, such as Sailashree Vihar, Chandrasekharpur and IRC Village, have many houses on numbered plots, so a visit is usually a doorstep arrival. Newer apartment complexes in Patia, Kalinga Nagar and Patrapada normally ask visitors to register at the gate, so share the tutor's name in advance.
Should Old Town families plan around temple festivals?
Yes. The Rukuna Ratha Yatra of the Lingaraja temple on Ashokashtami, and other festival days, bring large crowds to the lanes around Old Town and Samantarapur. Many families move that week's class to an online session or a different day, then return to the regular slot.
Can we find a tutor who teaches the Odisha board in Odia?
Ask for it in your request. Name BSE Odisha for Class 10 or CHSE for Classes 11 and 12, and say whether your child writes in Odia or English. The shortlist of two or three tutors will teach that board, and the free demo class is the moment to check their language of instruction.
Our locality has no specialist nearby. What then?
The search moves outwards: your own locality, then the zone, then all of Bhubaneswar, and finally online tutors from across India. On the city's edges, in places such as Patrapada or Mancheswar, a family might keep a local home tutor for everyday schoolwork and add an online expert for a single senior subject.
