Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Shillong is a city of slopes, steps and shared taxis, with heavy monsoon rain, cold winter evenings and some homes well away from the central wards. A weekly tutor visit works well when the tutor lives nearby; it works less well when the right specialist lives across the city, or when the subject is one that few local tutors teach. Live one-to-one lessons on a screen remove the journey, so the teacher can be chosen for the teaching alone. Written by the NXTutors Academic Team, this guide sorts Shillong situations into those that suit a screen and those that do not, then walks through booking, the kit to set up at home, what a good online hour looks like, combining visits with screen time, and a few household rules that keep lessons safe.
Upper Shillong sits well above the main town, and fewer tutors live close by; families there often keep a home tutor for younger children and use online lessons for senior subjects. Madanrting, on the edge of the city along the main road out, and Umpling, where many homes are some way off the main road, raise the same question for specialist subjects: a tutor from across Shillong may manage the trip for a few weeks, but rarely for a whole school year. On a screen, that distance disappears.
Every city has plenty of tutors for Class 10 maths and fewer for an ISC elective, an IB or IGCSE course, a less common language paper or the hardest JEE problems. Requiring that specialist to live within reach of your home narrows the field further, sometimes to nobody. On a screen the search runs across India instead. For an idea of what a course specialist should offer, read the ISC maths tutor page.
Heavy monsoon days and cold winter evenings make any evening trip slower, especially on hill roads. If your child has a home tutor, agree in the first week that on such days the lesson moves to a screen at its normal time. A student who already learns online barely notices the season.
By Class 11, school plus coaching plus getting home can use up the whole day. A tutor can log on for a focused hour after dinner far more easily than drive across the hills at that time of night. In Pynthorumkhrah, for instance, cross-city travel is slow at peak times, so an online slot for the late evening and a home visit at the weekend is a common pattern.
None of this is permanent. After a settled month or two, many younger children and board-changers manage well online.
| Situation | Format that tends to fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary-age child, tutor living in the same locality | Home | Hands-on help; a short trip for the tutor |
| Self-motivated Class 9 or 10 student on MBOSE, CBSE or ICSE | Online or a mix | A wider choice of board specialists and no evening travel |
| MBOSE Class 10 student in the weeks before the December SSLC | A mix, with extra short online sessions | Full papers at home; quick checks on screen between them |
| Class 11 or 12 student with coaching | Weekday online, weekend home visit | Late slots suit a screen; weekend trips are easier |
| IB, IGCSE or an uncommon ISC elective | Online | Few specialists live in any one city |
| Home in Upper Shillong or on the city's edge, needing a specialist | A mix | A nearby tutor for core subjects, a specialist on screen |
| Any home arrangement through the monsoon or winter | Home, with an agreed online fallback | The lesson keeps its hour whatever the weather |
For a fuller comparison, read home tutor vs online tutor.
A search for home tuition can still show online names. When too few local tutors match a Shillong request, results widen beyond the city, first to the rest of Meghalaya and then to online tutors across India, and every card shows where the tutor is based. Locality pages follow the same order: the area, then its zone, then Shillong, then online. Tutors who register go through an ID check before a profile is marked Verified. That check is about identity, not a police or background check; the quality of the teaching is something you judge in the demo.
For any subject with written working, from maths and physics to chemistry and accountancy, the tutor needs to see each line appear, not a snapshot of the finished page. What to put in place:
| Item | Problem it prevents |
|---|---|
| Laptop or tablet instead of a phone | Graphs, derivations and account formats squeezed onto a tiny screen |
| A second camera pointed at the notebook, or a pen tablet | The tutor missing the step where an error crept in |
| A whiteboard app or shared file | Explanations lost when the call ends; save it as revision notes |
| Headphones with a mic | Television, cooking and street noise drowning out the lesson |
| A bright table in a family room with the door open | Poor light and an isolated set-up |
| Mobile data to hotspot, and a charged spare device | A lesson lost to a power cut or a dropped connection |
Try every piece during the free demo, and sort out any camera problem before the first paid hour. Our article on online and offline tutoring has more tips.
Watch the balance of talk: across the hour, your child should do most of the explaining and writing. When an error appears, a good tutor asks a question that leads your child to it rather than fixing it for them, and cameras stay on throughout. Practice comes from your child's own board, school tests and past papers; for an MBOSE student, that means the board's sample and previous papers. Each lesson ends with a short written note of what was covered and what is homework. If the tutor mostly shows slides, it is a lecture rather than tutoring. More checks are in the demo class checklist.
Lawsohtun is an example: a quieter pocket beside Laban, where a tutor from Laban is the natural first choice for home lessons, and an online class on a fixed timetable can cover a subject that no nearby tutor teaches. Wherever you can, keep one teacher across both formats; a familiar tutor matters more than the medium.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. With no journey, some tutors charge a little less for an online hour, which helps most for homes far from the centre; a senior specialist's rate often stays much the same either way. The class, board, subject and number of weekly sessions move the fee most. You see every fee before the demo; read home tuition fees in Shillong and our pricing guide.
Tell us the class, board and subjects, whether you prefer a screen only or screen plus visits, your locality if anyone will visit, and your free evenings. If you would rather see local teachers before online ones, start from your zone page: Police Bazar and Jaiaw, Laban and Upper Shillong, Laitumkhrah and Rynjah or Mawlai and Pynthorumkhrah. Then book a free demo class, or start from the Shillong home tutors page. Board guides for the city: MBOSE and CBSE; subject guides: maths and English. Teachers looking for students can visit Shillong tuition jobs.
Switch the home-page search to Online, or type online in your search, then filter Find Tutors by subject, board, class, fee and more. Or request a demo with the Mode set to online: we reply with two or three tutors, each with their fee, and the first lesson is free.
Yes, if the tutor works from the board's own sample and previous papers and can see your child's written working through a notebook camera. Many MBOSE Class 10 families also add short online checks between home visits in the weeks before the December SSLC papers.
For children up to about Class 5, for a student who struggles to concentrate on a screen, in the first weeks after a change of board, and when there is no reliable connection. These are starting points; many families move to online or a mix once a routine settles.
A laptop or tablet rather than a phone, a second camera or pen tablet so the tutor sees working as it is written, a shared whiteboard or document, a headset, a quiet table in a common room, and backup data or a charged device in case the connection drops.
Often, yes, and it usually works well. Common patterns are a weekend visit with weekday online checks, or home lessons in drier months with an agreed online fallback on heavy-rain and cold winter evenings. Keeping one familiar teacher, who already knows how your child works and where the gaps are, matters more than the format.
No. Online mode removes the location limit. Even in a home search, if too few local tutors match, results widen to the rest of Meghalaya and then to online tutors across India, and every card shows where the tutor is based, so you can tell local tutors from those who teach only online.
