Home Tuition in Shillong: A Locality Guide to All Four Zones
Shillong grew outwards from two old villages, Mawkhar and Laban, which were brought into the municipality in 1878, and many of its neighbourhoods still carry the names of those older parts. Today the city spreads from the busy commercial core at Police Bazar across hill slopes to Laitumkhrah, Rynjah and Madanrting on one side and to Mawlai and Pynthorumkhrah on another. For home tuition, the name of the locality is only the start: a tutor also needs the part of it, the lane or bylane, and a landmark or bus stop to aim for.
This guide covers the four NXTutors zones in Shillong, locality by locality, with the details that help a first demo class begin on time.
Getting around: what a tutor needs from you
Shillong is connected by road and has no railway, so tutors travel by shared taxi, city bus or their own two-wheeler. Three habits make the first visit easier:
- Name the part, not just the locality. Laban has Lumparing, Madan Laban, Kench's Trace and Rilbong; Mawlai has Mawiong, Nongpdeng, Mawdatbaki and Kynton Massar; Mawprem has an upper and a lower side.
- Give the lane and a landmark. Many homes sit on sloping lanes or down steps from the road. Mention the bylane number where there is one, and where a scooter can be left.
- Use a bus stop as a meeting point. For a first visit in an outer locality, agreeing to meet at a named stop saves a search.
| Zone | Character | Localities | First-visit tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Police Bazar & Jaiaw | The central wards and the old Mawkhar side | Four | Book outside busy shop hours |
| Laban & Upper Shillong | The old Laban village and the higher ground beyond | Three | Say which named part of Laban you live in |
| Laitumkhrah & Rynjah | Laitumkhrah and the localities along the roads leading out from it | Six | Share the bylane number |
| Mawlai & Pynthorumkhrah | Large census towns on the outer side of the city | Three | Name the Mawlai locality and the nearest stop |
Police Bazar & Jaiaw
The centre of the city, where most routes meet and where the 1878 municipality began. See the Police Bazar & Jaiaw zone page.
- Police Bazar: also known as Khyndailad, the main commercial hub, with homes in the roads branching off the core such as Jail Road, Quinton Road and Thana Road. Easy to reach from almost anywhere; pick a slot outside shop hours and give the building name and floor.
- Jaiaw: an old residential ward that was once part of the Mawkhar village, including Jaiaw Laitdom, and running up towards Mawlai. Many homes are reached by narrow sloping lanes, so say whether the last stretch is on foot.
- Mawkhar: one of the two original villages, beside the Iewduh (Bara Bazar) market and the Jhalupara bus stand on GS Road. Market roads are busy in the day, so late-afternoon or evening classes work better.
- Mawprem: a long-settled residential ward near Garikhana, split into Upper and Lower Mawprem. Tell the tutor which side, plus a landmark such as a shop or bus stop.
Laban & Upper Shillong
The second of the old villages and the higher, more spread-out ground above the town. See the Laban & Upper Shillong zone page.
- Laban: brought into the municipality in 1878 and still known by its parts: Lumparing, Madan Laban, Kench's Trace and Rilbong. Shared taxis via the Bara Bazar and Rilbong side give tutors a simple route in; name your part when booking.
- Lawsohtun: a census town on the Laban side, near Jackson Trace Road, with Lumparing and Rilbong close by. Tutors who already teach in Laban are the natural first match; mention if the last part of the way is a footpath.
- Upper Shillong: the high ground above the city, including villages such as Nonglyer and Laitmynsaw. Fewer tutors live close by, so many families pair a home tutor for younger children with online classes for senior subjects, and choose earlier slots when mist or cold sets in.
Laitumkhrah & Rynjah
Laitumkhrah and the localities strung along the roads that lead out of it. See the Laitumkhrah & Rynjah zone page.
- Laitumkhrah: named from the Khasi word for free and the Umkhrah river, which rises here, and known as a centre of education with a busy market. Traffic is heaviest when schools open and close, so evening slots run more smoothly.
- Malki: a ward including Dhankheti and Risa Colony, between the centre and Laitumkhrah, with bus stops at Dhankheti and Malki. Tell a new tutor which entrance to use and where to park.
- Nongthymmai: the "new village" in Khasi, including Jingkieng and Motinagar. Lanes climb off the main road, so share the lane name and whether a car can reach the gate.
- Rynjah: beyond Laitumkhrah, linked to it by a road via Goraline, with lanes often known by bylane number. Share the bylane and a landmark, and mention any steps down from the road.
- Umpling: a census town beside Rynjah, reached by its own road from Laitumkhrah, with Nongrah nearby. The Lapalang and Nongrah stops make good meeting points for a first visit.
- Madanrting: on the edge of the city beyond Nongthymmai, with stops at Mawblei and Madanrting on the main road. New lanes may not show on maps, so give a landmark rather than an address alone.
Mawlai & Pynthorumkhrah
Large census towns on the outer side of the city, where tutors who live locally are often the steadiest match. See the Mawlai & Pynthorumkhrah zone page.
- Mawlai: one of the historic neighbourhoods, adjoining Jaiaw and made up of several localities. Name yours and the nearest stop, such as Mawiong, Nonglum or Mawlai Pump; many homes are reached by steps.
- Pynthorumkhrah: a census town including Langkyrding, next to Mawpat, Nongmynsong and Shyiap. Stops at Laitlum, Umkdait and Itshyrwat are handy reference points; say whether a car or only a two-wheeler reaches the gate.
- Nongmynsong: once known as Lalchand Basti, between Pynthorumkhrah and Rynjah, with Golf Links and Lyndhurst Estate nearby. The Nongmynsong and Umkdait stops are convenient meeting points.
Boards, weather and the school week
Shillong students study under the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), which conducts the SSLC examination for Class 10 and the HSSLC examinations for Class 12, or under CBSE, ICSE or an international programme. Mention the board and, for Classes 11–12, the stream, so each matched tutor knows the syllabus; for notices and dates, rely on mbose.in. See Meghalaya board tutors in Shillong and CBSE home tutors in Shillong.
In the monsoon, allow extra time on wet evenings and agree at the start which classes move online on very wet days. In winter, darker evenings are a reason to choose an earlier slot for younger children.
How NXTutors can help

Frequently asked questions
How do home tutors get around Shillong?
By road: shared taxis, city buses or their own two-wheeler, since Shillong has no railway. Tutors crossing the centre pass through the busy commercial area, so slots outside shop and school rush hours are easier to keep. In outer localities, meeting at a named bus stop helps on the first visit.
What directions should we give a tutor coming for the first time?
Give the locality and its part, such as Lower Mawprem or Kench's Trace, the lane or bylane number, and a landmark. Say whether the house is above or below the road, whether steps lead to the door, and where a scooter can be parked. A shared map pin also helps.
Which localities are easiest for tutors to reach?
The central wards, Police Bazar, Mawkhar and Jaiaw, because most routes pass through or near them, along with Laitumkhrah and Malki. In outer areas such as Upper Shillong, Madanrting or Mawlai, tutors living nearby are the natural match, and an online tutor can cover subjects no local tutor teaches.
We live in Mawlai. Why do directions matter so much?
Mawlai is large and made up of several localities, including Mawiong, Nongpdeng, Mawdatbaki and Kynton Massar, so the name alone can send a tutor to the wrong side. Say which part you are in, add the nearest stop such as Mawlai Pump, and confirm the route before the free demo class.
What happens to home classes in heavy rain?
Wet evenings slow travel on the hill roads. Many families agree that a class moves online at the usual time on a very wet day, or is made up within the same month. Settle this rule, and whether an online class carries the same rate as a home visit, at the start.
