Home Tuition in Imphal: A Locality-by-Locality Guide by Zone
Imphal is a city of leikais. Almost every locality, from Uripok to Khurai, is made up of many small named neighbourhoods, often with family names that sound alike, and some are split further into mapals and lanes. For a home tutor arriving for the first time, the locality name alone is rarely enough. This guide covers the three NXTutors zones in Imphal, locality by locality, with the details that help a demo class start on time.
The Imphal River divides the city into two districts. Imphal West, with its headquarters at Lamphelpat, holds the old trading heart around Thangal Bazar and the residential areas to its west and south. Imphal East, with its headquarters at Porompat, lies across the river and takes in Wangkhei, Khurai and Chingmeirong. Kangla Fort, on the western bank, is the landmark most people use to describe where they are.
Writing an address a tutor can follow
Before the first visit, send the tutor four things in one message:
- The locality and the leikai, for example Sagolband Thangjam Leikai or Khurai Konsam Leikai.
- The mapal or lane, where your neighbourhood uses one.
- A landmark that an auto driver will recognise.
- A phone number, so the tutor can call from the main road.
Most tutors in Imphal travel by two-wheeler or auto, and narrow inner lanes are easier on two wheels. If your home is inside a gated compound, give the guard the tutor's name beforehand.
| Zone | Side of the river | Localities in this guide | Main timing point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uripok, Thangmeiband & Lamphel | West | Four | Office hours around Lamphelpat |
| Sagolband, Keishampat & Singjamei | West, central and south | Five | Shopping hours near the bazaars |
| Wangkhei, Khurai & Porompat | East | Four | Bridge crossings in the late afternoon |
Uripok, Thangmeiband & Lamphel
The western side of the city, from the long-settled leikais of Uripok to the district offices at Lamphelpat. See the Uripok, Thangmeiband & Lamphel zone page.
Uripok
An old residential area west of the city centre, made up of leikais such as Polem, Yambem, Achom, Khaidem, Bachaspati and Tourangbam, along with the Naoremthong, Khwai Brahmapur and Sorbon Thingel pockets. Iroishemba, Langol and Lamphel are close by, so a tutor already teaching on this side can usually add a home here.
Thangmeiband
A large and central area covering Sinam, Yumnam, Maisnam, Hijam and Polem Leikai, with Lalambung Makhong, Guigailong and Langol Tarung at its edges and part of Thangal Bazar inside the same block. Many families here look for Class 10 and Class 12 help, and often book early-evening slots before the market roads get busy.
Langol
The name covers several separate neighbourhoods, including Langol Lairembi Leikai, Langol Aying Leikai and Langol Ningthou, while Langol Tarung sits on the Thangmeiband side. Tell the tutor which Langol you mean.
Lamphel and Lamphelpat
The headquarters of Imphal West district, where government offices sit next to homes and the Lamphel Sana Keithel market area. Traffic gathers at office opening and closing times, so after-school classes that begin once offices close tend to run on time.
Sagolband, Keishampat & Singjamei
The busy middle and south of Imphal West, from the bazaars beside Kangla Fort to the boundary with Imphal East. The Nambul River runs through this part of the city. See the Sagolband, Keishampat & Singjamei zone page.
Thangal Bazar and Paona Bazar
The central trading area, west of Kangla Fort, where the Ima Keithel, the women-run market, stands in buildings with pagoda-style roofs. Homes sit on the lanes behind the shopfronts. Shopping hours make these streets very busy, so classes run more smoothly in the evening after shops quieten or early on weekend mornings.
Sagolband
A central area of many leikais and leiraks, including Sagolband Tera, Bijoy Govinda, Thangjam, Ingudam and Takhellambam Leikai, with Sayang Pukhri Mapal, Kakhulong, Old Lambulane and part of Paona Bazar in the same cluster. With so many named lanes, the leikai and lane matter more than usual.
Keishampat
A compact locality of Mutum, Thiyam, Leimajam and Thokchom Leikai, Lairembi Lampak and the Sega Road area, grouped with Keishamthong, Elangbam Leikai and Huidrom Leikai. A tutor living in Keishampat, Kwakeithel or Sagolband can reach most homes here.
Kwakeithel
Spread across Thokchom, Akham and Thounaojam Leikai and Nganapi Thong Mapal, with Irom Pukhri Mapal and Khagempalli Panthak nearby. It borders both Keishampat and Sagolband, which widens the choice of nearby tutors.
Singjamei
Near the boundary with Imphal East, with Chirom, Sapam, Mayengbam, Leishangthem and Okram Leikai and Oinam Thingel, grouped with Chingamakha and Chingamathak. Singjamei and Chingamakha form one natural catchment, so a tutor in either can usually manage regular visits in both.
Wangkhei, Khurai & Porompat
Imphal East, across the river from the city centre. The riverside walk on the eastern bank, developed under the city's smart city programme, is a handy landmark. See the Wangkhei, Khurai & Porompat zone page.
Wangkhei
Residential leikais such as Wangkhei Angom Leikai, Konsam Leikai and Tokpam Leikai, with Ningthem Pukhri Mapal and Thangapat Mapal, close to Moirangkhom, Brahmapur and Rajbari. Tutors from the western side cross by the central bridges, which are busy in the late afternoon, so a tutor from Khurai or Chingmeirong is often easier to schedule.
Khurai
A large residential area on the eastern side, with leikais including Konsam, Thongam, Thoidingjam, Sajor, Laishram and Chingangbam, and Kongpal, Khomidok and Sangomsang nearby. Its western parts adjoin Wangkhei. Give the exact leikai, as the name alone covers a wide area.
Porompat
The headquarters of Imphal East district, formed in 1997, where district offices stand beside homes. Kongba Laishram Leikai, Gangapat, Naharup, Makhapat and Thangbrijou are grouped with it. As with Lamphelpat, slots that begin after offices close are the steadiest.
Chingmeirong
Divided into Chingmeirong Nongchup and Chingmeirong Nongpok, grouped with Mantri Pukhri, Kabo Leikai, Golapati and New Checkon. Several schools are in the area, so say which part you live in and keep class times clear of school opening and closing.
Boards, weather and the school year
State board students take the HSLC examination of the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BOSEM) after Class 10, then come under the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur (COHSEM), which conducts a Class XI examination and the Higher Secondary Examination. Other schools follow CBSE, and ICSE, IB or IGCSE learners can add an online specialist. Check dates on bosem.in and cohsem.nic.in. See Manipur board tutors in Imphal and CBSE home tutors in Imphal.
In the monsoon, allow extra time for every journey and agree with the tutor at the start which classes can move online on a day of heavy rain. Shorter winter evenings are a reason to keep younger children's classes earlier.

Frequently asked questions
Why do Imphal tutors ask for the leikai name?
Imphal tutors ask for the leikai name because most Imphal localities are made up of many small leikais, and several carry similar family names, as in Uripok, Sagolband and Khurai. Send the locality and leikai, the mapal or lane, a landmark an auto driver knows and a phone number in one message, so the first demo class starts on time.
Is it harder to find a home tutor across the Imphal River?
Finding a home tutor across the Imphal River is not harder, but timing matters because the central bridges are busy in the late afternoon. A tutor living on your own side of the river is usually easier to schedule. Families in Wangkhei often match with tutors from Khurai or Chingmeirong on the eastern side, and online classes cover any gaps.
Which class times suit homes near Thangal Bazar?
Homes near Thangal Bazar and Paona Bazar suit evening classes after the shops quieten, or early weekend mornings, because shopping hours fill the market streets. Homes sit on the lanes behind the shopfronts, and a two-wheeler parks far more easily than a car there, so tell the tutor where they can leave one near your home before the first visit.
Do we need a tutor who knows the Manipur board?
Yes, a child in a Manipur state board school in Imphal needs a tutor who knows the BOSEM and COHSEM syllabus. BOSEM sets the Class 10 HSLC examination, and COHSEM conducts the Class XI and Higher Secondary examinations. Mention the board, class and subject in your request so each matched tutor knows the syllabus, and CBSE students should say so too.
Can Imphal home classes move online during the monsoon?
Imphal home classes can move online on a very wet monsoon evening if you agree the rule with the tutor before the rains start. Many families switch that day's class online or make it up later in the same month. Write down how much notice each side gives, and in the shorter winter evenings keep younger children's classes earlier.
How does NXTutors choose tutors for an Imphal request?
For an Imphal request, NXTutors matches two or three tutors, looking first at those living nearest your locality, then the wider zone, the rest of Imphal and finally online tutors. You see each tutor's fee before the free demo class, and changing tutor later costs nothing. Share the class, board, subject and locality when you send the request.
Which landmarks help tutors find homes in Imphal?
Kangla Fort, on the western bank of the Imphal River, is the landmark most people in Imphal use to describe where they live. On the eastern side, the riverside walk developed under the smart city programme is a handy reference. Add a nearer landmark an auto driver will recognise, plus the leikai and lane, and give the guard the tutor's name if you live in a gated compound.
