Home Tuition in Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair): A Locality Guide by Zone
Sri Vijaya Puram, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, was known as Port Blair until the Government of India decided on the new name in September 2024. Many families and tutors still use both names, and NXTutors lists the city under either. For home tuition, the useful way to read it is in three parts: the old settlement around Aberdeen and the bays, the busy central localities around Junglighat, and the villages on the edge that were brought into the municipal area as housing grew.
This guide takes each of those zones in turn, locality by locality, with the details that help a tutor find your home and keep the same weekly slot.
The city at a glance
The civic body, now styled the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council, dates from 1957 and has 24 wards since its limits were widened in 2015. In 2011 the administration had proposed adding ten villages next to the town, including Garacharma, Dollygunj, Prothrapur and parts of Brookshabad and Austinabad, because of a substantial rise in housing and commercial activity there.
| Zone | Character | Homes you will find | Tell the tutor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aberdeen & Old Town | The oldest named stations of the settlement, the bazaar and the jetty | Homes above or behind shops, government quarters, family houses | The lane, a shop or the clock tower as a reference |
| Junglighat & Central Localities | Long-established residential localities with local bazaars | Family houses, quarters blocks, some multi-storey apartment buildings | Block or flat number and where a visitor may park |
| Expansion Villages | Villages added to the city as housing spread outwards | Houses on their own plots, newer lanes | A map pin and a nearby landmark |
Aberdeen & Old Town
By 1871 Aberdeen and Haddo were already stations of the penal settlement, and the clock tower in Aberdeen remains a familiar landmark. See the Aberdeen & Old Town zone page.
- Aberdeen Bazaar: the city's shopping centre, where the civil administration set up its headquarters in 1944. Many homes sit above shops or in lanes off the market, so name the lane and use the clock tower or a shop as a reference. A slot before the evening shopping crowd, or a weekend morning, is easier to keep.
- Phoenix Bay: a bay-side locality with the jetty from which the weekly ship to Campbell Bay leaves, and Transport Bhawan nearby. Check sailing days before fixing a class near the jetty, and give the lane name, because visitors often confuse the jetty side with the residential lanes.
- Haddo: one of the oldest named parts of the city, with English-, Hindi- and Telugu-medium government schools. Mention the medium in your request; in a quarters block give the block, quarter number and nearest gate.
Junglighat & Central Localities
The residential middle of the city, where government secondary schools on the CBSE list sit at Junglighat, Dairy Farm and Delanipur and a senior secondary school at School Line. See the Junglighat & Central Localities zone page.
- Junglighat: a long-established locality and one of the revenue villages of the Port Blair tehsil. House numbers alone are hard to follow on a first visit, so share the lane and a landmark; in an apartment building add the floor and where to park.
- Delanipur: a residential area whose government school runs to Class 10, so the move into Class 11 is when families here most often look for science and mathematics help. Fix a weekday slot before school tests begin.
- School Line: a locality with a government senior secondary school, so tutoring demand often centres on Classes 11 and 12 in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and accountancy. Agree parking for the first visit.
- Dairy Farm: a residential locality with a government secondary school, where most children follow CBSE from the early classes. Primary pupils often do well with two or three short visits a week; Class 9 and 10 students need a tutor who knows CBSE sample papers.
- Bathubasti: also written Bathu Basti, a busier locality with its own bazaar and a mix of houses and multi-storey apartment buildings. Give the floor and flat number, and start before the evening market rush.
Expansion Villages
The villages around the old town limits that the administration planned to bring into the city in 2011, before the limits were widened in 2015. National Highway 4 runs north from the city towards Diglipur in North Andaman. See the Expansion Villages zone page.
- Dollygunj: houses and residential plots, with a government school in the locality. Newer lanes are not always easy to find, so send a map pin before the first class and fit the slot around school bus and work timings.
- Garacharma: a census town just outside the old city limits, with plots for new homes. Tutors from the centre may come only on certain days, so two fixed weekday slots, or a weekend home class with weekday online sessions, suit many families.
- Prothrapur: one of the larger settlements of South Andaman Island, with a government senior secondary school on the CBSE list. Class 11 and 12 science, commerce and mathematics are the usual needs; a specialist can teach online alongside a home tutor.
- Brookshabad: also spelt Brooksabad, partly inside the city and partly just outside it. The boundary matters less than the address: share the lane, a landmark and a map pin.
- Austinabad: another village partly brought into the city. Agree the weekly pattern before the demo, and keep an online option for heavy monsoon evenings.
Board and medium of instruction
The South Andaman district administration states that all secondary and senior secondary schools are affiliated to CBSE, and no separate island board is named on its pages. The same page records five mediums of instruction: English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali. So a request should carry two details: the CBSE class and, if it is not English, the medium. Check current syllabus and exam rules on cbse.gov.in, and see CBSE home tutors in Sri Vijaya Puram for tutors who teach this board.
Keeping a slot through the year
Three things tend to interrupt tuition here: ship days for families travelling between islands, heavy monsoon evenings, and the run-up to school tests and board papers. Settle at the start which classes move online and how a missed visit is made up. An online tutor for Sri Vijaya Puram students also covers subjects such as accountancy or computer science where a nearby specialist is hard to find.
How NXTutors can help
Share your child's class, medium, subjects and locality, and NXTutors suggests two or three matched tutors, starting with those nearest your home, then your zone, the rest of the city and finally online. You see each tutor's fee before the free first demo class, and changing tutor later is free. Hours, rates and questions to ask are covered in home tuition fees in Sri Vijaya Puram.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sri Vijaya Puram the same place as Port Blair?
Yes. In September 2024 the Government of India decided to rename Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as Sri Vijaya Puram. Many people still use the old name, so NXTutors pages mention both. Your locality name, such as Junglighat or Haddo, is what matters most in a request.
How should we describe our home to a tutor near Aberdeen Bazaar?
Give the lane name and a fixed reference point, such as the clock tower or a well-known shop, since many homes sit above or behind shops. Say where a two-wheeler can stop. A slot before the evening shopping crowd builds, or on a weekend morning, is usually easier to keep.
We live in Garacharma. Will a home tutor come out to us?
Often, yes, though tutors from the central localities may come only on fixed days. Send a map pin and a landmark, since newer lanes can be hard to find. Where no nearby tutor fits, NXTutors widens the search across the zone and city, and online classes cover the remaining subject.
Which board do tutors in the city usually teach?
CBSE. The district administration states that all secondary and senior secondary schools in South Andaman are affiliated to CBSE, so most local tutors work from CBSE books and papers. If your child follows another syllabus and no nearby tutor teaches it, an online tutor is the practical route.
Can a tutor teach in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or Bengali?
Some can. Schooling in the islands runs in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, with Telugu- and Hindi-medium government schools at Haddo, for example. Name the medium in your request with the class and subjects, and use the free demo to check the tutor explains clearly in that language.
