Home Tuition in Puducherry: A Guide to Every Locality, Old Town to Villianur
Puducherry, still often called Pondicherry, is a compact town, but it is run by more than one civic body. The old Boulevard Town, Muthialpet, Mudaliarpet and Nellithope belong to Pondicherry Municipality, which was formed when the former communes of Pondicherry and Mudaliarpet were amalgamated. Lawspet, Kalapet, Saram, Reddiarpalayam and Thattanchavady are among the eight revenue villages that make up Oulgaret Municipality. Villianur and Ariyankuppam, to the west and south, are commune panchayats of their own.
Below, the four NXTutors zones are taken in turn, with a note on every locality.
How do tutors get around Puducherry?
Mostly by two-wheeler, with buses filling the gaps. The main bus stand sits near Nellithope and Saram, Puducherry railway station is on the southern boulevard of the old town, and Villianur station lies on the same line towards Villupuram. Three roads matter most: the Cuddalore road running south through Mudaliarpet and Ariyankuppam, the East Coast Road running north through Lawspet to Kalapet, and the road west towards Villianur.
Heritage Town
The old town is split by the Grand Canal into the French Quarter on the seaward side and the Tamil Quarter inland, with Muthialpet to the north. Most homes open straight onto the street.
White Town (French Quarter) has straight streets of colonial-era buildings running down to Rock Beach. A house number and street name are usually enough for a tutor to find the door. The seafront streets fill up in the evenings and at weekends, so weekday slots are easier.
Tamil Quarter (Heritage Town) holds most of the town's listed heritage buildings, along with the busiest shopping streets and the central market. Homes are older houses facing the street, so a phone call at arrival is all that is needed. The station and the bus stand are both close.
Muthialpet covers the northern wards of the town, with a market complex more than a century old, a clock tower and the fishing hamlet of Vaithikuppam on the shore. Homes are mainly independent houses, with some small apartment buildings where a flat number and phone number should be shared in advance.
Mudaliarpet & Ariyankuppam
This zone follows the Cuddalore road south from the town centre, across the Sankaraparani river and out to the coastal villages.
Mudaliarpet was once a separate commune of French India. Homes range from older houses on side streets to apartment buildings, some of them taller blocks that sign visitors in at the gate. The main road is busy at office hours, so a tutor from nearby wards suits weekday evenings.
Nellithope and Anna Nagar are municipal wards close to the bus stand and a major signal junction. Houses mean doorstep arrival; for flats, give the building name and floor and let the guard know.
Ariyankuppam is a town and commune laid out in a grid of straight streets, much like the Boulevard Town, with the river running through it. Local buses towards Bahour and Cuddalore pass through. Give the cross-street name for the first visit.
Manavely is a census town in Ariyankuppam commune, between Kakkayanthope, Veerampattinam and the river. Bus route 2A between Puducherry and Chinna Veerampattinam runs through it. Share a street name and a nearby junction, and say whether the home is a house or a flat behind a gate.
Veerampattinam is a coastal village in the Puducherry region, with a long beach and frequent buses from the town. Homes in the village lanes are easiest to find from a well-known landmark on the main road. During the Aadi-month car festival weeks the roads get crowded, so plan class times around them or switch those days online.
Thavalakuppam lies beyond Ariyankuppam on the highway to Cuddalore, where the Embalam, Pudukuppam and Nallavadu roads branch off. Homes on the plotted roads usually have their own gate, so name the side road and a highway landmark.
Lawspet & ECR
Lawspet is a densely populated part of Puducherry. Pethuchettypet, Ashok Nagar, Kumaran Nagar and Shanthi Nagar are among its neighbourhoods, and the airport is here too. Government housing and apartment blocks may check visitors at the gate; colony houses allow doorstep arrival. Airport Road and College Road are busiest at school opening and closing times.
Karuvadikuppam is one of Oulgaret's revenue villages and is usually counted as part of Lawspet. Its main road, lined with shops, runs into Muthialpet, so tutors from both the Oulgaret side and the northern wards of the old town can reach it.
Kamaraj Nagar takes in Krishna Nagar, Rainbow Nagar, Venkata Nagar, Brindavanam and nearby colonies, a settled residential belt with a shared park. Homes mix houses, builder floors and apartment buildings, so tell the tutor whether to come to a front door or a building gate.
Kalapet is the northernmost enclave of the Pondicherry district, along the East Coast Road and next to the sea. Families often look for a tutor living in Kalapet or on the Lawspet side, and online classes widen the choice. Homes inside an institution's grounds have their own entry rules, so check how a visitor is admitted.
Reddiarpalayam & Villianur
Reddiarpalayam is a largely residential revenue village where many government employees and professionals live, with Pon Nagar, Jawahar Nagar and Kavery Nagar nearby and the Shanmugapuram market close by. Most visits are to houses; a colony name and a bus-stop landmark help on the first day.
Saram is a calm residential ward near the main bus stand, easy to reach for tutors who travel by bus. Apartment buildings may ask for the visitor's name at the gate.
Thattanchavady is an Oulgaret revenue village and ward with plotted land and builder-floor homes. Houses allow doorstep arrival; builder floors may need a call from the gate, so share the floor number and a clear landmark.
Villianur is a commune panchayat and taluk headquarters on the Sankaraparani river. Villianur railway station, in Sulthanpet, gives tutors from town a rail option alongside buses. Families usually find a tutor within Villianur and use online classes for specialist subjects. Temple festival days crowd the centre, so plan around them.
What should you send a tutor before the first visit?
| Kind of home | Where you find it most | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| House opening onto the street | White Town, Tamil Quarter, Muthialpet, Ariyankuppam | Street name, house number and a phone number |
| Apartment building with a guard | Mudaliarpet, Nellithope, Saram, parts of Lawspet | Building name, floor, flat number; tell the guard the tutor's name |
| Government quarters or an institution's grounds | Lawspet, Kalapet | How visitors are admitted, and any gate pass needed |
| Plotted road or village lane | Thavalakuppam, Veerampattinam, Manavely, Thattanchavady, Villianur | The side road or lane, a landmark on the main road and a map pin |
Which boards do Puducherry students follow?
Puducherry has no school board of its own. The Directorate of School Education ran orientation programmes in 2024 for a swap from the state syllabus to the CBSE syllabus, and its result pages list Class 10 and 12 results as CBSE from 2025. It also publishes separate State Board (SSLC and +2) result analyses for private schools, and some families follow ICSE and ISC or IB and IGCSE. Tell us the board and class when you ask for tutors, and for children who moved syllabus partway through, mention it so the tutor can check for gaps. See CBSE home tutors in Puducherry, ICSE tutors, and the JEE and NEET pages for entrance work.

Frequently asked questions
Should we look for a Puducherry tutor who lives on our side of town?
Yes, a Puducherry tutor living on your side of town, along the same Cuddalore road, East Coast Road or Villianur road, finds a fixed weekly slot easier to keep. Puducherry is compact, but those main roads still shape the trip. NXTutors looks for nearby tutors first, then widens to your zone, the rest of the town and online.
Can a home tutor reach us by bus in Puducherry?
In most Puducherry localities a home tutor can arrive by bus, since the main bus stand near Nellithope and Saram links the town. Local buses run through Ariyankuppam towards Bahour and Cuddalore, route 2A serves Manavely, and Villianur also has a railway station on the line from town. Share the nearest stop or junction so the tutor can plan the last stretch.
What should we tell a tutor before a first visit in White Town?
Before a first visit in White Town, a street name, house number and phone number are usually enough, since most homes there open straight onto the street. Choose a weekday class time if you can, because the seafront streets fill up in the evenings and at weekends, and a two-wheeler is easier to park than a car.
Is it harder to find a home tutor in Kalapet or Veerampattinam?
The choice of home tutors in Kalapet or Veerampattinam can be narrower, since both sit apart from the main town. Ask anyway: NXTutors starts with tutors living nearby, such as in Lawspet for Kalapet or Manavely for Veerampattinam, and suggests an online tutor where a specialist for a harder subject lives further away. In Kalapet, check how visitors enter institution grounds.
How should we plan classes around Puducherry's local festivals?
Plan classes around Puducherry's local festivals by marking the big dates with the tutor at the start of the year. These include the Aadi-month car festival weeks at Veerampattinam and temple festival days in Villianur. Agree with the tutor whether those classes move to another day, switch online at the usual time or are skipped, and write the rule down.
Which board do Puducherry schools follow now?
Puducherry has no school board of its own, and its Directorate of School Education result pages list Class 10 and 12 results as CBSE from 2025. The directorate ran orientation programmes in 2024 for the move from the state syllabus to CBSE, and still publishes separate State Board result analyses for private schools. Mention any syllabus change so the tutor can check for gaps.
