Tuition work in Puducherry town falls into four zones that we use to plan home visits. Heritage Town is the old Boulevard Town, with White Town and the Tamil Quarter on either side of the Grand Canal and Muthialpet to the north. Mudaliarpet & Ariyankuppam runs south along the Cuddalore road to Manavely, Veerampattinam and Thavalakuppam. Lawspet & ECR covers Lawspet, Karuvadikuppam, Kamaraj Nagar and the separate Kalapet enclave inside Oulgaret Municipality, and Reddiarpalayam & Villianur takes in Saram, Thattanchavady and the town of Villianur. Families mostly live in independent houses or on plots, with apartment buildings, builder floors and government quarters in the newer parts, so a tutor more often rings at a door than signs a gate register.
The board picture here is unusual, and worth understanding before you set up a profile. Puducherry has no school board of its own. The Directorate of School Education ran orientation programmes in 2024 for a swap from the state syllabus to the CBSE syllabus, and its result analyses list Class 10 and Class 12 results as CBSE from 2025. It also publishes separate state-board SSLC and +2 result analyses for private schools, so some students still follow that syllabus. Alongside them you will meet CISCE students and a smaller number following IB or Cambridge IGCSE. Ask each family which syllabus the school follows, and in which year it changed.
Home and online work both suit the town. Buses, the railway stations at Puducherry and Villianur, and two-wheelers carry tutors between zones, but shopping evenings in the old town, the Cuddalore road at office hours and festival days in Veerampattinam and Villianur all shape when a home lesson can start. In Puducherry you will mostly teach CBSE, which the territory's government schools now follow after leaving the state syllabus. Some private schools keep the state-board SSLC and +2 syllabus, CISCE families take ICSE and ISC, and a few learners follow IB or Cambridge IGCSE, often with online help. Classes 1–12
Government schools in Puducherry have moved from the state syllabus to CBSE, and the Directorate's result analyses show Class 10 and Class 12 as CBSE from 2025. So a student may have begun on one syllabus and be finishing on another. Teach from NCERT, rehearse with the board's own specimen questions and marking guidance, and look early for gaps the change left.
Class 10 ICSE; Class 12 ISC
These two examinations reward full written answers over a broad syllabus, and English includes set literature texts. If you know them well, you can take ICSE and ISC students at home in your own part of Puducherry and teach senior electives online to learners elsewhere. Classes 11–12 (DP)
Only a handful of Puducherry families follow the IB Diploma, so expect much of this work to be online. Coursework counts alongside the final papers: you can coach a student through the criteria for an Internal Assessment or the Extended Essay, but the work itself must stay entirely theirs. Classes 9–10
Expect few IGCSE students locally and more of them online. Effective lessons lean on timed past papers checked against the published mark schemes, on what each command word asks for, and on core versus extended tiers. Ask early which awarding body the school uses, because Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel syllabuses are not the same.
SSLC (Class 10); +2 (Class 12)
Puducherry has no board of its own, and only some private schools still follow the state-board SSLC and +2 syllabus; the Directorate of School Education publishes separate state-board result analyses for them. Before teaching such a student, confirm with the family which syllabus the school uses, work from its prescribed textbooks, and take every date and notice from official sources only.
Zones marked "Tutors needed" have the fewest tutors living in or travelling to them, so families there mostly see online tutors today. Add them to your travel areas to reach those families first.
White Town and Tamil Quarter homes are mostly old houses opening onto the street, so you ring and are let in at the front door; ask for the street name as signed, since many are French. Puducherry railway station and the main bus stand are close if you travel without a vehicle. Shopping streets, the central market and the seafront crowd on evenings and weekends, so weekday afternoon slots are easiest to hold.
Muthialpet, Tamil Quarter (Heritage Town), White Town (French Quarter)
This is a long zone, so list only the stretch you can cover. Mudaliarpet and Nellithope have apartment buildings where visitors sign in at the gate, while Ariyankuppam's grid streets and the plots in Thavalakuppam usually mean arriving at a door or family gate. Buses towards Veerampattinam, Bahour and Cuddalore, and route 2A through Manavely, help if you do not ride. Check the Aadi-month car festival dates at Veerampattinam before fixing Friday classes.
Ariyankuppam, Manavely, Mudaliarpet, Nellithope and Anna Nagar, Thavalakuppam, Veerampattinam
Lawspet's government housing campuses and apartment blocks may record visitors at the entrance, while colony houses let you come to the door; in Kalapet, campus residences have their own entry rules, so ask the family first. The East Coast Road links Lawspet, Krishna Nagar and Kalapet, so a tutor living along it can serve several localities. Airport Road is slowest when schools and other institutions open and close, so start lessons after that rush.
Saram and Thattanchavady sit near the main bus stand and a major junction, which makes them easy to reach by bus, though the junction is busy at office hours. Builder floors in Thattanchavady usually mean a phone call from the gate, while Reddiarpalayam is mostly houses. Villianur is a separate town with its own railway station in Sulthanpet on the Villupuram line; tutors living there are the steadiest match, and temple festival days crowd its centre.
