Studying Abroad from Gurgaon: SAT, AP and IB Timeline for Parents
If your child hopes to study abroad after school, the work that matters most starts in Grade 9 or 10, not in Grade 12. Strong subject grades from Grade 9 onwards, one well-timed attempt at the SAT (if the country and university want it), an English test (if asked for) and a calm application year are what most families in Gurgaon (Gurugram) need to plan for. The usual mistake is leaving tests, subject grades and applications to pile up in the same few months.
This guide gives you a year-by-year timeline from Grade 9 to Grade 12 for the US, UK, Canada and Singapore in general terms, explains what the SAT, AP exams, IB predicted grades and IELTS or TOEFL actually are, and shows where a tutor fits in and where a tutor should never step in. Every university sets its own rules, so treat this as a map and always check the university's own admissions pages for the final word.
What do universities abroad look at?
The details vary a lot by country and by university, but most applications from India are built from the same pieces:
- School grades. Your child's Grade 9 to 12 record (for the US and Canada especially), or predicted and final board results (for the UK and many others). This is the foundation, whatever the board.
- Standardised tests. The SAT for many US universities, and AP exams as extra evidence of subject depth. Policies differ: some universities require the SAT, some make it optional, some do not use it. Check each university.
- English language proof. IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT, unless the university accepts your child's school English results instead.
- Personal writing. Essays for US applications, a personal statement for UCAS in the UK, and short answers for some Canadian and Singapore applications.
- School references and activities. A counsellor or teacher reference, and evidence of genuine interests outside class.
How is the digital SAT structured?
The SAT is now taken on a device, in the College Board's Bluebook app. According to the College Board, it has two sections:
| Section | Modules | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | Two modules of 32 minutes each | 54 | 64 minutes |
| Math | Two modules of 35 minutes each | 44 | 70 minutes |
| Total | With a 10-minute break | 98 | 2 hours 14 minutes |
The test is adaptive by section: how your child does in the first module decides whether the second module is harder or easier. That makes the first module in each section count for a lot, so careless errors early on are expensive. The SAT is still scored from 400 to 1600, and a Desmos graphing calculator is built into the app for the Math section.
For most Gurgaon students who are strong at school maths, the SAT Math content is not the hard part. The hard part is speed, reading the question carefully and not dropping marks on easy questions. The reading and writing section rewards wide reading and precise grammar more than last-minute tricks. Our guides to SAT Math modules on the digital SAT and SAT Reading and Writing go through each section in detail.
What are AP exams and does your child need them?
AP (Advanced Placement) exams are College Board subject exams, scored from 1 to 5. The College Board notes that many US colleges give credit or advanced placement for scores of 3 and above, although each college decides its own policy. The 2027 AP exams are scheduled over two weeks in May 2027.
AP exams are not required for most applications. They are most useful when:
- your child's school does not offer a curriculum that shows depth in a subject they want to study, or
- your child wants to show strength in a subject beyond the school syllabus, such as calculus or physics before a STEM application.
Not every school offers AP exams, so ask your child's school, or check the College Board's AP pages, early on how and where your child can register. One or two well-chosen AP subjects done well are worth more than several done in a rush alongside board preparation.
How do IB predicted grades work?
For IB Diploma students, predicted grades are central. The IB describes a predicted grade as the teacher's prediction of the grade a student is expected to achieve in a subject, based on all the evidence of their work, and notes that universities typically use them when making conditional offers. The Diploma is scored out of 45: up to 7 points in each of six subjects, plus up to 3 points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. Results for the May session are released in early July.
What this means in practice: the grades your child earns in DP1 and early DP2 (Grades 11 and 12) shape the predictions, and the predictions shape the offers. A weak first year in IB Maths or Physics is very hard to hide later, which is why choosing the right IB Maths course and level (AA or AI, SL or HL) matters from the start. The same idea applies to CBSE, ICSE/ISC and other boards: for UK applications, the school adds predicted grades and a reference, so Grade 11 performance and school exams matter.

IELTS or TOEFL: which English test?
Both are widely accepted, but always check the exact test and minimum score each university asks for.
- IELTS Academic is the IELTS version meant for university study. It tests listening, reading, writing and speaking, and scores are reported on a 9-band scale, overall and for each skill.
- TOEFL iBT also tests reading, listening, speaking and writing. From January 2026, ETS reports TOEFL iBT scores on a new 1 to 6 scale, and for a two-year transition period also gives a comparable score on the older 0 to 120 scale. If a university still lists a requirement on the 0 to 120 scale, that transition score helps you compare.
Many students from English-medium schools in Gurgaon find the English test manageable with focused practice. Writing is often the weakest section, because it rewards structure and timing rather than vocabulary. Our guide to IELTS Writing preparation covers the task types.
When is the UCAS deadline for UK universities?
UK undergraduate applications go through UCAS. For 2027 entry, UCAS gives two key deadlines:
- 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time for the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine or science.
- 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time for all other courses. This is the "equal consideration" date: applications received by then must be considered equally.
If your child is in Grade 11 now, they will apply for 2028 entry, and UCAS will publish those dates later. It is safe to plan on an October deadline for the most competitive courses and a January deadline for the rest, then confirm on ucas.com. Some courses also need admissions tests or interviews, and each university lists these on its own course pages.
US, Canada and Singapore in general terms
US. Applications usually open in the summer before Grade 12. Many colleges offer early rounds in the autumn and regular rounds later, and each college publishes its own deadlines and testing policy. Essays carry real weight, and so does the full Grade 9 to 12 record.
Canada. Universities generally look closely at Grade 11 and Grade 12 marks in the subjects relevant to the programme. Application windows and document requirements differ by province and by university.
Singapore. Universities typically ask for school results, predicted or final board scores, and sometimes subject-specific requirements and tests. Timelines vary by university and by the qualification your child holds.
In every case, the rule is the same: build a simple spreadsheet in Grade 10 with each university's requirements and deadlines, and update it every term.
What should your child do each year?
| Year | Academics | Tests | Applications and profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 9 | Build steady grades; fix weak maths and English basics now | None needed; read widely in English | Try activities; keep a simple record of what your child does |
| Grade 10 | Board exams (CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE) or MYP; choose Grade 11 subjects with future courses in mind | A diagnostic SAT practice test to see the starting point | Shortlist countries; list each target university's subject requirements |
| Grade 11 | The most important year for grades and IB/UK predictions | SAT preparation and a first attempt; AP subjects if useful; English test if timing suits | Build the university list; deepen one or two genuine interests; start thinking about essay themes |
| Summer before Grade 12 | Revise Grade 11 topics; IB students work on the Extended Essay and IAs | SAT retake if needed; IELTS or TOEFL | Draft essays and personal statement (your child's own writing) |
| Grade 12 | Keep grades steady; offers are usually conditional on final results | AP exams in May if taken | Submit applications to each deadline; interviews or admissions tests where needed |
Two practical points for Gurgaon families. First, Grade 11 is when school, coaching, SAT preparation and activities all compete for the same evenings, and long commutes cut the time further. Plan fixed weekly slots rather than hoping it fits. Second, if your child is also sitting Indian entrance exams as a backup, be honest about the load: preparing seriously for JEE and for the SAT at the same time is possible for some students and exhausting for most.
How does a tutor fit in, and where must a tutor stay out?
A good tutor helps with the parts that are about learning:
- Subject grades. Regular support in maths, physics, chemistry or economics so that school and predicted grades stay strong. This matters more than any test score.
- SAT Math. Timed practice, error analysis and strategy for the adaptive modules.
- English test skills. Feedback on practice writing and speaking against the published criteria.
- AP subjects. Covering content your child's school does not teach.
- IB internal assessments. Explaining the criteria, discussing ideas and giving the kind of general feedback the IB rules allow.
Where a tutor should not step in: essays, personal statements and any assessed work must be your child's own. A tutor or counsellor can talk through ideas, ask questions and point out where something is unclear, but should never write, rewrite or "polish" it into someone else's voice. Universities and exam boards treat this as an academic honesty issue, and a personal statement that does not sound like the student can do more harm than good. If anyone offers to write your child's essays, say no.

Frequently asked questions
When should my child start SAT preparation?
Most students do well starting in Grade 11, after a diagnostic practice test in Grade 10 shows where they stand. That leaves time for a first attempt in Grade 11 and a retake before applications. Starting earlier rarely helps unless there are clear gaps in basic maths or English reading.
Does my child need AP exams to apply to US universities?
Usually not. AP exams are optional extra evidence of subject depth, and each college sets its own credit policy. They are most useful when your child's school curriculum does not already show strength in the subject they want to study. One or two AP subjects done well beat several done in a hurry.
Are IB predicted grades really that important?
Yes, especially for UK applications. The IB notes that universities typically use predicted grades when making conditional offers, and teachers base predictions on your child's work over the Diploma. Strong, consistent performance in DP1 and early DP2 is the most reliable way to earn good predictions.
Should we choose IELTS or TOEFL?
Either is widely accepted, but check each university on your child's list, including the minimum overall and section scores. IELTS Academic reports on a 9-band scale. TOEFL iBT now uses a 1 to 6 scale, with a comparable 0 to 120 score during the transition period.
Can a tutor help write my child's college essays?
A tutor can discuss ideas and point out unclear writing, but the essay must be your child's own work. Universities treat ghost-written essays as an academic honesty issue. Use tutors for subject grades, SAT maths and English test skills, and let your child's own voice carry the personal statement.
