Maharashtra Board tutors in Kalyan-Dombivli: SSC and HSC, with the commerce stream read from the board's own scheme

Most school students in Kalyan and Dombivli sit the Maharashtra State Board's SSC at the end of Class 10 and its HSC at the end of Class 12. This page is built from what the board itself publishes on mahahsscboard.in: the subject lists with their codes, and the evaluation schemes that tell teachers how papers are set. It looks at the language choices that matter in a city where homes speak many languages, the subjects of the HSC commerce stream, and one commerce paper in detail, Organisation of Commerce and Management. It then covers science and the entrance tests, how tutors reach six localities, and what to check at the free demo.

The State Board, in brief, for families in Kalyan and Dombivli

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education conducts the SSC (Class 10) and the HSC (Class 12). It works through divisional boards, which its website lists; your child's school or junior college can tell you which office handles its papers and marksheets. Everything a tutor needs to plan from is on the official site: the subject list for each examination, with a code for every subject, and the evaluation scheme for each paper, which sets out marks, question types and internal assessment.

That matters because guidebooks and older notes do not always keep up when the board revises a scheme. A tutor who opens the current document with you, and plans the year from it, is working from the same rules as the examiner. Read it yourself too; it is shorter than most parents expect.

SSC: the subjects a Class 10 student writes

The board's SSC list gives every subject a code. Mathematics is 71, Science & Technology is 72 and Social Sciences is 73. Alongside these, a student takes a first language and one or more second or third languages, from a long list of options. A short look at the list explains a lot about how a Class 10 week should be spent: three core papers that most families think of as "the SSC", and language papers that can quietly decide the final percentage.

The SSC core, as the board lists it
CodeSubjectWhere a tutor usually helps
71MathematicsWritten steps, geometry proofs and the harder questions at the end of the paper
72Science & TechnologyReasons, labelled diagrams and numericals
73Social SciencesMap work, timelines and answers in the expected order
01–12, 16–36 and compositesLanguagesLetters, essays, grammar and translation, set and corrected every week

Our Kalyan-Dombivli maths, science and English pages go into the subjects themselves.

First languages for a city of many home languages

Figures from the 2011 census show that homes in Kalyan-Dombivli speak Marathi, Hindi and Gujarati most, followed by Urdu, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and others. The board's SSC list reflects that kind of variety. First-language papers include Marathi (01), Hindi (02), English (03), Urdu (04), Gujarati (05), Kannada (06), Tamil (07) and Malayalam (09), among others. Second and third languages include Marathi (16), English (17), Urdu (18) and Gujarati (19), and there are composite papers that join two languages, such as Marathi-Hindi (AB) or Hindi-Gujarati (BT).

  • Know the exact code. A child may study Marathi as a first language or as a second or third language; the papers are different, and the tutor must prepare for the right one.
  • Plan for the language spoken least at home. A child from a Malayalam- or Gujarati-speaking home who studies Marathi as a second or third language often needs steady weekly practice from the middle-school years, not a rush in Class 10.
  • Treat language papers as scoring papers. A clean letter, summary or essay earns marks that careless grammar gives away. Ask the tutor to set one piece of writing every week and correct it with your child, line by line.

Marathi, semi-English or English medium

State Board schools in both towns teach in Marathi, semi-English and English medium. In semi-English classes, maths and science are taught in English, so a child may read a science chapter in English and then explain it at home in another language. That is not a problem in itself, but the tutor should know it. When you send a request, mention the medium, the first language and any second or third language, so we can suggest tutors who can explain comfortably in the language your child thinks in while keeping written answers in the language of the paper.

The HSC streams, and the commerce subject list

At junior college, every HSC student takes English (01) and two compulsory subjects, Health & Physical Education (30) and Environment Education & Water Security (31), along with the subjects of their stream. Science students usually choose from Mathematics & Statistics (40), Physics (54), Chemistry (55), Biology (56) and Information Technology (97). Commerce students choose from a different set.

HSC commerce subjects on the board's list
CodeSubjectKind of tutoring that helps
49EconomicsDiagrams, definitions and applying ideas to examples
50Book Keeping & AccountancyA subject specialist; formats and practice from journal to final accounts
51Organisation of Commerce & ManagementPrecise terms, comparisons and case answers (see below)
52Secretarial PracticeStructured written answers
53Co-operationStructured written answers
88Mathematics & Statistics (Commerce)A maths tutor who knows the commerce paper, not the science one (40)
99Information Technology (Commerce)Practical work alongside theory

Many students in Sonarpada and nearby parts of Dombivli East choose commerce after Class 10, and parents are often unsure what kind of tutor that needs. Usually it is an accountancy specialist, with separate help for economics or maths only if needed. Accountancy in Class 11 builds from journal entries to ledgers and final accounts, so a student who falls behind in the first term struggles all year. Our commerce home tutor in Mumbai page covers the stream across the wider region.

A closer look: Organisation of Commerce and Management (51)

OCM is the commerce paper students most often treat as "just theory", and that is exactly why marks leak from it. The board's evaluation scheme for Standard XII, written for the reconstructed textbook introduced in 2020–21, is clear about where the marks are. The final result is out of 100: 80 for the theory paper in the board examination and 20 for an Application Based Test held as internal evaluation.

OCM Standard XII: marks by unit, as the scheme sets them
UnitMarksWith options

Entrepreneurship Development55
Business Services2027
Emerging Modes of Business710
Social Responsibilities of Business Organisation710
Consumer Protection717
Marketing1520
Total80116

Business Services and Marketing together carry 35 of the 80 marks, so they deserve the most practice. The scheme also weights what is being tested: knowledge 20 marks, understanding 20, application 25 and skill 15. In other words, more marks go to using an idea than to reciting it. By question type, 20 marks are objective, 52 are short answers and only 8 are a long answer.

The OCM board paper, question by question

The theory paper is 80 marks in three hours. Every question after the first offers a choice, which is why the marks with options add up to 116.

OCM board paper pattern from the evaluation scheme
QTypeMarks eachAttemptMarks
1Four of ten objective formats (choose the option, match pairs, one word, true or false, odd one out, complete, one sentence, correct the underlined word, arrange in order)14 sets of 520
2Explain terms or concepts24 of 68
3Study a case or situation and give your opinion32 of 36
4Distinguish between43 of 412
5Answer in brief42 of 38
6Justify the statements42 of 48
7Attempt the following52 of 310
8Long answer81 of 28

The scheme explains the thinking behind each type. "Distinguish between" tests whether a student can compare two ideas point by point, so answers need matched points, not two separate paragraphs. "Justify" questions test whether a statement can be defended in a logical order. Case questions ask students to think independently and give their own view of a situation. A tutor who drills only definitions prepares a student for barely a quarter of the paper.

The 20 internal marks: the Application Based Test

The Application Based Test is set inside junior college. According to the scheme, it lasts one hour, covers the whole syllabus, and is written on the question sheet itself. It is held in January or February, depending on the college's own examination schedule. Its pattern is short: correct the underlined word and rewrite the sentence (4 marks), complete the sentences (4), find the odd one or arrange in proper order (3), and study three of four cases or situations (9).

Because it covers everything, the ABT is a good reason to keep older chapters warm through Standard XII. The same scheme also describes a first-term examination of 50 marks and a preliminary examination that copies the final split of 80 and 20, so a student meets the format several times before the board paper.

Turning the OCM scheme into a term plan

  1. Weekly comparisons. Two "distinguish between" questions a week, written as matched points, then marked against the textbook.
  2. One case a week. A short situation from the chapter just finished; the student writes a view and gives reasons, as Question 3 and the ABT both ask.
  3. Justify, do not repeat. For each "justify" practice question, the student must use the statement's own words in the first line and build a reason from there.
  4. Heavier units, more time. Business Services and Marketing get extra sessions; Entrepreneurship Development, at 5 marks, gets enough to be safe.
  5. Objective formats on rotation. Ten formats are possible in Question 1, so each week practises two or three of them.

The same approach, of reading the scheme first and then planning, works for every HSC paper. Ask any tutor which scheme document they are teaching from.

HSC science and the entrance tests

Science students carry the HSC and, very often, an entrance test in the same two years. MHT-CET is conducted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, whose notices list PCM and PCB groups; check the current pattern on cetcell.mahacet.org. JEE Main and NEET (UG) are conducted by the National Testing Agency. The HSC wants complete written answers and a practical journal; the entrance tests want objective speed. A tutor should keep both alive every week. Our JEE and NEET pages for the city cover that balance, and the MHT-CET tutor in Mumbai page describes the state test. Six checks for a State Board tutor at the free demo

  1. Can the tutor name the subject code your child writes, and open the current evaluation scheme for it?
  2. Do they know whether your child takes Marathi as a first language or as a second or third language?
  3. For a commerce student, do they practise "distinguish between", "justify" and case questions, not only definitions?
  4. Do they mention the internal marks, such as the Application Based Test, without being asked?
  5. Can they explain in a language your child is comfortable with, while keeping written answers in the paper's language?
  6. Is the weekly slot realistic for the side of the railway line they come from?

If the demo does not convince you, ask for another; switching tutor later is free as well. Our demo class checklist adds more.

Maharashtra Board Home Tutor in Kalyan-Dombivli (SSC & HSC): common questions

What does a Maharashtra Board home tutor in Kalyan-Dombivli charge?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each SSC or HSC tutor in Kalyan and Dombivli sets their own rate, shown on the profile before the demo.

How do I book an SSC or HSC tutor in Dombivli or Kalyan?

Send the class, medium, subject codes or stream, the languages your child takes and your locality with a landmark. We suggest two or three matched tutors, each with the fee visible before booking, and the first class is a free demo. If the fit is wrong, we arrange another demo, and changing tutor later is free.

Which first languages can a Kalyan-Dombivli student take in the SSC?

The board's SSC list offers many first languages, including Marathi, Hindi, English, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam. There are also second and third language papers and composite papers that join two languages. Check your child's exact subject code with the school, because a first-language paper and a second-language paper are prepared differently.

What are the SSC subject codes for maths, science and social sciences?

On the board's SSC list, Mathematics is code 71, Science and Technology is 72 and Social Sciences is 73. These three core subjects sit alongside the language papers, which come in first, second or third language and composite forms. A tutor should know the codes and plan from the board's current evaluation scheme for each.

Which subjects are on the HSC commerce list?

The board's HSC commerce list has seven subjects, each with its own code. They are Economics (49), Book Keeping and Accountancy (50), Organisation of Commerce and Management (51), Secretarial Practice (52), Co-operation (53), Mathematics and Statistics for Commerce (88) and Information Technology for Commerce (99). Every HSC student also takes English and the two compulsory subjects coded 30 and 31.

How is HSC Organisation of Commerce and Management marked?

HSC Organisation of Commerce and Management is marked out of 100, with 80 for the three-hour theory paper and 20 for an internal Application Based Test. In the theory paper, Business Services carries 20 marks and Marketing 15, the two heaviest units. Short answers make up 52 of the 80 marks.

What is the Application Based Test in HSC commerce?

The Application Based Test is a one-hour internal test worth 20 marks, set by the junior college on the whole syllabus. Students write on the question sheet itself. In Organisation of Commerce and Management it includes correcting underlined words, completing sentences, finding the odd one or ordering items, and answering three of four case questions.

What kind of tutor does an HSC commerce student in Dombivli need?

An HSC commerce student in Dombivli usually needs an accountancy specialist first, because Book Keeping and Accountancy builds step by step from journal entries to final accounts. Help with economics or the commerce maths paper can be added if needed. For theory papers, the tutor should practise comparisons, justifications and case answers, not only definitions.

Does a semi-English medium student need a different kind of tutor?

A semi-English student needs a tutor who can explain in the home language while training written answers in English. In semi-English classes, maths and science are taught in English, so a child may understand a chapter at home in Marathi or Hindi but struggle to write it. Mention the medium in your request.

Can one tutor handle the HSC and MHT-CET for a Kalyan-Dombivli science student?

Yes, one tutor can, provided both kinds of practice happen every week. The HSC wants complete written answers and a practical journal, while MHT-CET, run by the State Common Entrance Test Cell with PCM and PCB groups, wants objective speed. Ask the tutor to reserve practical and prelim weeks before filling the rest.
