For a large share of Bhilai families, "the board" means the Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education. Its official name is Chhattisgarh Madhyamik Shiksha Mandal, most people say CGBSE or the CG Board, and it sets two public examinations: High School after Class 10, and Higher Secondary after Class 12. What sets the board apart for a tutor is how much it publishes. Every subject has a blueprint that fixes the marks for each chapter and the shape of the question paper. This page explains how to read those documents, what they show for the subjects Bhilai students most often need help with, how the Higher Secondary faculties work, and what to ask a tutor at the demo. All exam detail on this page is taken from cgbse.nic.in and the 2026-27 documents posted there. The board revises blueprints, so look again when your child reaches the exam year.
A notification of the state's School Education Department dated 20 July 2001 created CGBSE soon after Chhattisgarh was formed, and the board has held its own examinations from 2002 onwards. Its head office is in Raipur. The work across the state is shared by four divisional offices, at Bilaspur, Surguja, Jagdalpur and Rajnandgaon, and Durg district, which includes Bhilai, falls under the Rajnandgaon office along with Balod, Bemetara, Kawardha and neighbouring districts. For most families that detail only matters when a document has to be followed up, but it is worth knowing which office handles your district.
The board examines regular students in schools, private (swadhyayi) candidates, and vocational students at High School level. It also conducts the two-year D.El.Ed and D.P.Ed courses taken after Higher Secondary. Its home page states that cgbse.nic.in is its only official website, so treat results, admit cards and notices from anywhere else with care.
Under the board's 2026-27 adhyapan yojana (teaching and examination plan), Class 9 and Class 10 share one list of six subjects. Every one is out of 100, with 75 for the written paper and 25 for practical or project work.
| Group | Subject | Book named in the plan | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Languages | Hindi | Hindi | 75 + 25 |
| Languages | English | Flight, in both classes | 75 + 25 |
| Languages | Sanskrit or another listed language | Sanskrit: Salila in Class 9, Shyamala in Class 10 | 75 + 25 |
| Main subjects | Mathematics, Science, Social Science | The board's own titles | 75 + 25 each |
The plan notes that these books are printed by the state's textbook corporation in Raipur. A tutor should teach from them, not from another board's book that happens to cover similar ground, because the blueprints are built chapter by chapter around them.
The English blueprint surprises many parents. Of the 75 written marks, only 19 come from the reader, Flight: 5 for vocabulary, 10 for prose and 4 for evaluative questions on poetry. Grammar carries 15. The largest block, 41 marks, is reading and writing.
| Task | Marks | What practice looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Essay | 8 | One essay a fortnight, planned in points before writing |
| Data analysis | 7 | Describing a table or chart in clear sentences |
| Seen passage and unseen passage | 5 each | Answering in the student's own words, not lifted lines |
| Letter, formal and informal | 5 | Getting the layout right every time |
| Notice and report | 4 each | Short formats with fixed headings |
| Summarising | 3 | Cutting a paragraph to its main points |
A tutor who spends every lesson on the reader is teaching a quarter of the paper. Writing formats can be practised in short, regular bursts, and they reward a student who has never been confident in English, because layout and structure earn marks even before the language is polished. Our English home tutor in Bhilai page covers this in more detail.
Social Science is a single 75-mark paper with 25 for project work, but its blueprint does not separate history, geography, political science and economics the way many textbooks from other boards do. Instead it sets nine units, and most units mix two or three disciplines. One unit, for example, puts agriculture, the Russian revolution and the great depression between the two world wars, and money and credit together for 10 marks. Others pair food security with decolonisation and the cold war, or democracy and social movements with human settlement and globalisation. Unit weights run from 4 to 12 marks.
For a tutor, that layout has a clear consequence: revision should follow the board's units, not a subject-wise order borrowed from elsewhere, so that a student who skips one unit does not lose a geography chapter and a history chapter at once. A one-page summary per unit, built up through the year, is a simple way to keep track.
Each blueprint has two parts. The first gives units, marks and the teaching periods the board expects. The second, the question plan, lists every question on the paper by type and marks, and classifies the paper by learning objective and by difficulty. The Class 12 Accountancy plan is a good example. It is a three-hour paper of 80 marks:
Across the paper, about 30% of marks are set as easy, 50% as average and 20% as hard, and marks are spread across knowledge, understanding, application, analysis, evaluation and creative questions. A tutor who has read the plan can show a parent exactly where marks go missing: in the one-mark parts, in the long answers, or in the hard fifth of the paper.
In Classes 11 and 12 a student picks two languages from three (Hindi, English and a third from the board's list), then one faculty. Environmental studies is an additional compulsory subject, and physical and moral education are taught in school with a fixed period in the timetable. Students on the new vocational course replace one language with a trade.
| Faculty | Fixed subjects | Choices |
|---|---|---|
| Science | Physics 201, Chemistry 202 | Then Biology 203 or Mathematics 204, with the remaining one allowed as an extra subject (803 or 804) |
| Commerce | Accountancy 301, Business Studies 302 | One of Economics 303, Commercial Mathematics 169, Mathematics 204, Computer Application 151, Steno-typing 164 or Industrial Organisation 332; Commercial Mathematics can also be an extra |
| Arts | Three subjects chosen from six: History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Economics | Alternatively two of the six plus one listed option, for instance Mathematics, Sanskrit or Computer Application |
| Agriculture | Elements of agricultural science and mathematics; crop production and horticulture; animal husbandry, dairy, fisheries and poultry | Fine arts and home science are the other two faculties |
Settle the faculty, and any extra subject, before Class 11 is far along. An extra subject keeps a door open, for example to both engineering and medicine, but adds a full paper each year. Our guide to choosing a board and stream lists the questions to ask.
The plan for Class 11 lists the books and marks for each subject. Physics, Chemistry and Biology are 70 theory and 30 practical, as are Geography and Psychology. Mathematics, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, English, Hindi, History, Political Science and Sociology are 80 and 20. English uses Hornbill and Snapshots, Hindi uses Aroh and Vitan, and Economics has two books, one on statistics and one on the development of the Indian economy. Class 11 is where Higher Secondary results are really decided: a student who lets Class 11 physics or accountancy slide arrives in Class 12 with two years of work to do in one.
| Subject | How the theory marks divide | Tutor's priority |
|---|---|---|
| Accountancy 301 (80 + 20 project) | Partnership firms 35, with dissolution alone 13; company accounts 25, share capital 13 and debentures 12; then 20 for either analysis of financial statements or computerised accounting | Partnership and company formats until they are automatic; the chosen Part 2 option practised separately |
| Chemistry 202 (70 + 30) | Physical and inorganic 37, led by solutions and electrochemistry at 16; organic 33 across five chapters | Electrochemistry numericals; organic conversions learnt as chains |
| Biology 203 (70 + 30) | Genetics and evolution 20; reproduction 16; human welfare 12; biotechnology 12; ecology 10 | Inheritance problems and labelled diagrams |
The Accountancy choice in Part 2 needs a decision early in the year, and the tutor must teach the option your child's school has chosen. In science, the practical component is assessed on its own, so the record and the viva need a place in the tutor's calendar too. Students preparing for entrance exams beside the board should read our JEE and NEET pages for Bhilai, which show where these chapters overlap with the national syllabuses.
Alongside the main examination, the board's site lists results of a second main examination, which it also calls the avsar (opportunity) examination, for both High School and Higher Secondary. Who may sit it, and for which subjects, is set by the board's regulations and notices, so read the current ones on cgbse.nic.in rather than relying on what other families remember. Our advice is simple: prepare for the main examination as if it were the only one, and if your child does plan to use the second, keep the tutor on for those subjects only.
The board's site and most of its blueprints are in Hindi, while the English blueprints are in English. Many Bhilai students study partly in each language. Two practical points follow. Practice should happen in the medium of the final paper, with the vocabulary the board itself uses. And a student moving between Hindi and English medium, or adding an entrance exam in English, has to carry technical words in both for some months. Find out in the demo whether the tutor can bridge the two.

Bhilai is in Durg district, which comes under the CGBSE divisional office at Rajnandgaon, according to the board's own site. The head office is in Raipur, and the other divisional offices are at Bilaspur, Surguja and Jagdalpur. The board says cgbse.nic.in is its only official website.
Each CGBSE Class 10 subject is out of 100, with 75 for the written paper and 25 for practical or project work. The six subjects are Hindi, English, Sanskrit or another listed language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science, taught from books printed by the state textbook corporation.
Most marks in the CGBSE Class 10 English paper are for reading and writing, which carry 41 of the 75 written marks. The essay, data analysis, passages, letter, notice, report and summary sit there. The reader Flight carries 19 marks and grammar 15.
CGBSE Social Science revision should follow the board's nine units because each unit mixes geography, history, political science and economics chapters. Skipping one unit can cost chapters from two or three disciplines at once. A one-page summary per unit, built through the year, keeps revision manageable.
The CGBSE commerce faculty has Accountancy (301) and Business Studies (302) as fixed subjects, plus one choice such as Economics, Commercial Mathematics, Mathematics or Computer Application. Commercial Mathematics can also be taken as an extra. Two languages and environmental studies complete the Higher Secondary course.
The CGBSE Class 12 Accountancy paper gives 80 theory marks and 20 project marks. Partnership firms carry 35 and company accounts 25, both compulsory. The last 20 come from one option: analysis of financial statements or computerised accounting. Teach the option your child's school has chosen.
The second main, or avsar, exam is a further CGBSE examination for High School and Higher Secondary, listed with its own results on the board's site. Eligibility and subjects are set by the board's current rules, so read them on cgbse.nic.in. Prepare for the main examination as if it were the only one.
CG Board tutors reach Junwani from Kohka, Smriti Nagar or the Durg side, Kailash Nagar from Kurud and Vaishali Nagar, and Bhilai-3 from Charoda and Padum Nagar. Write "Junwani, Bhilai", the Kailash Nagar colony name exactly as on the gate, and "Bhilai-3" first in that address.
