The National Testing Agency runs JEE (Main). In the 2026 information bulletin, Paper 1 was a computer-based test of 75 questions for 300 marks: 25 in each of mathematics, physics and chemistry, of which 20 were multiple choice and 5 needed a numerical answer. A correct response earned four marks and a wrong one cost a mark in both kinds of question. There were two sessions, in January and April, and a candidate's better score counted. Candidates who ranked high enough in Paper 1 could then register for JEE (Advanced), which the IITs set as two compulsory papers in English and Hindi. Every detail can change between years, so treat jeemain.nta.nic.in and jeeadv.ac.in as the only authority.
Two of those facts matter more than the rest for tuition. Negative marking means guessing has a cost, so practice must include deciding when to leave a question. And numerical-answer items cannot be solved by eliminating options, so a student who leans on option tricks will be found out.
