Home Tuition in Chandigarh's Sectors: A Sector-by-Sector Guide
Chandigarh's sectors look alike on a map, a neat grid of rectangles bounded by the same kind of roads, yet a home tutor's visit changes a good deal from one to the next. In the older northern sectors most families live in plotted houses and the tutor rings the bell at the gate. Further south, housing-board flats and cooperative group housing societies take over, and in Manimajra old-town lanes sit beside planned complexes. There is no metro yet, so the neighbouring sectors, the nearest market and the main road at office hours decide which tutors can reach you and which slot holds.
This guide covers the city's two zones, Sectors 1–30 and Sectors 31–56 with Manimajra, sector by sector.
How is the sector grid laid out?
Chandigarh was one of the earliest planned cities of independent India. Its plan uses standardised neighbourhood units called sectors and a seven-tier road system: the central axes are called Marg, such as Jan Marg, Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg, and the arterial roads around sectors are called Path. Sectors 1 to 30 were developed in the first phase as low-rise plotted development, with Sector 17 as the central business district. Sectors 31 to 47 followed with four-storey apartments for government employees, at nearly four times the density, and apartment living took root with the cooperative group housing societies of Sectors 48 to 51.
| Zone | Typical homes | How tutors arrive | Road to plan around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandigarh Sectors 1–30 | Plotted houses, builder floors, government housing | Scooter, car, bus via the Sector 17 terminal, then auto | Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg |
| Chandigarh Sectors 31–56 and Manimajra | Housing-board flats, builder floors, societies in Sectors 48 to 51, Manimajra's old town | Bus via the Sector 43 terminal, scooter or car, then auto | Dakshin Marg, roads towards Mohali and Zirakpur, Housing Board Chowk |
The revived Chandigarh Metro, cleared in July 2024, is to be built in its first phase between 2027 and 2034. Until then the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking's buses from the inter-state bus terminals in Sectors 17 and 43 are the public-transport backbone for tutors.
Chandigarh Sectors 1–30
Sector 22 was the first sector to be developed, and the Capitol Complex in Sector 1 became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2016. Most homes here are houses with their own gates, and the office rush on Madhya Marg is the main thing to plan around.
- Sector 8: independent houses and low-rise blocks around a busy sector market, linked by Madhya Marg, Himalaya Marg, Sarovar Path and Vigyan Path. No society register to sign.
- Sector 9: bungalows, houses and government residences on tree-lined streets between Sectors 8 and 10. Some government homes ask for a name at the entrance; elsewhere the tutor rings at the gate.
- Sector 10: houses from one-kanal homes to duplexes, with the city's art gallery and a stretch of the Leisure Valley inside. The Rose Garden across Madhya Marg is a handy landmark.
- Sector 11: builder floors and houses beside an education campus from the 1960s, next to Sectors 10 and 15. Builder floors often share one entrance, so give the floor and the bell.
- Sector 15: beside the large campus in Sector 14, with a lively market and paying-guest homes among family houses. Tutors who study or work on the campus next door can reach it easily.
- Sector 16: the Rose Garden and the cricket stadium on Jan Marg, with houses and government housing between Madhya Marg and Jan Marg. On match days, move the class or hold it online.
- Sector 18: independent houses next to Sectors 17 and 19, with a theatre for music and drama from the early 1960s as a landmark. The Sector 17 bus terminal makes it easy to reach by bus.
- Sector 19: houses alongside housing-board flats, where a tutor walks up to the door. Sadar Bazaar in Sector 19-C on Sukhna Path draws evening crowds, so agree a parking spot early.
- Sector 21: four blocks, A to D, of houses and builder floors, with a motor market, temples, a gurdwara and a post office. Dakshin Marg runs along its edge; share block, house number and floor.
- Sector 22: a long-running street market and a large main market beside Sector 17, with houses and flats in calmer inner lanes. Evening parking is tight, so a tutor on bus or auto keeps better time.
- Sector 27: houses and builder floors near Sectors 19 and 28, with the head post office for this side of the city. Chandi Path, Sukhna Path and Madhya Marg suit tutors from Panchkula or Manimajra.
Chandigarh Sectors 31–56 and Manimajra
Chandigarh Housing Board homes are spread across Sectors 38 to 41, 44 to 47, 51, 52 and 55 and the Modern Housing Complex at Mani Majra. The Terraced Garden in Sector 33 and the Garden of Fragrance in Sector 36 make good landmarks. Chandigarh Junction railway station lies on the eastern side and also serves Panchkula, and Housing Board Chowk is the key junction on Madhya Marg.
- Sector 33: houses and builder floors near Sectors 32 and 34 and the old village of Burail. The Terraced Garden, laid out in 1979 with a musical fountain, is the landmark; Dakshin Marg is the road to time around.
- Sector 35: a busy market of restaurants, boutiques and electronics shops, with houses and builder floors in quieter pockets. Tutors on public transport take a bus to the Sector 43 terminal and an auto.
- Sector 36: plotted houses and floors on quiet streets around the Garden of Fragrance, laid out in 1998 around a lotus pond, with a large temple beside it. Visits are straight to the door.
- Sector 38: houses and housing-board flats next to Sector 38 West, a separate pocket with its own market and small housing-board homes. Say which part you live in; most blocks have no staffed gate.
- Sector 40: mid-budget housing-board flats and houses next to Sectors 39 and 41. The Sector 40-C market, known for its Sunday second-hand bike market, is the landmark, and tutors from Mohali's phases are within reach.
- Sector 44: a housing-board sector split into 44-A, 44-C and 44-D, from one-room flats to larger upper and lower flats. The Sector 43 bus terminal is next door; share the sub-sector and block.
- Sector 46: one of the few southern sectors with independent houses regularly available, beside housing-board flats, between Sectors 45 and 47. The roads towards Zirakpur and Mohali suit tutors from both towns.
- Sector 49: mostly cooperative group housing society flats of two to four bedrooms, near Sectors 48, 50 and 51. Most societies have a guarded gate, so add the tutor's name to the visitor list once.
- Manimajra: an old town founded in the early sixteenth century and notified as Sector 13 in February 2020. Old-town lanes with tight parking sit beside planned complexes that may ask for a name at the gate; Housing Board Chowk jams at rush hour.
Which weekday slots hold up in the city sectors?
- Soon after school. A class that begins before the evening traffic on Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg is the most likely to start on time, especially for tutors from Panchkula, Mohali or Zirakpur.
- Later in the evening, with a nearby tutor. A tutor from the next sector, such as Sector 15 for Sector 11 or Sector 45 for Sector 46, can manage a slot after the rush.
- Weekend mornings for longer sessions, and online classes on stadium match days.

Frequently asked questions
Do home tutors in Chandigarh's sectors need a gate pass?
Home tutors in Chandigarh's older Sectors 1 to 30 rarely need a gate pass, because most homes there are plotted houses where the tutor rings at the gate. Some government homes ask for a name at the entrance. In the cooperative group housing societies of Sectors 48 to 51 and planned complexes in Manimajra, add the tutor's name to the visitor list once.
How do tutors get around Chandigarh without a metro?
Tutors get around Chandigarh without a metro by car, scooter, city bus or auto, with autos usually covering the last stretch. The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking runs buses from the inter-state bus terminals in Sectors 17 and 43. The revived Chandigarh Metro, cleared in July 2024, is to be built in its first phase between 2027 and 2034, so it does not affect tutor travel yet.
Which Chandigarh roads should class times be planned around?
In Chandigarh, plan class times around Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg, which carry heavy evening traffic at office hours, and Housing Board Chowk near Manimajra, which jams at rush hour. Tutors from Panchkula, Mohali or Zirakpur feel this most. A class that starts soon after school, or one with a tutor from the next sector, such as Sector 15 for Sector 11, holds up well.
How do tutors reach the southern housing-board sectors of Chandigarh?
Tutors reach Chandigarh's southern housing-board sectors, such as 38, 40, 44 and 46, mainly by bus to the Sector 43 terminal, by scooter or car, then by auto. The terminal sits next to Sector 44. Sector 40 is within reach of tutors from Mohali's phases, and the roads towards Zirakpur and Mohali suit tutors from both towns for Sector 46. Most housing-board blocks have no staffed gate.
What landmark should we share for a tutor's first visit in Chandigarh?
For a tutor's first visit in Chandigarh, share the sector, sub-sector or block, house number and floor, plus a nearby landmark such as a market or garden. Useful landmarks include the Rose Garden in Sector 16, the Terraced Garden in Sector 33, the Garden of Fragrance in Sector 36 and the Sector 40-C market. Builder floors often share one entrance, so give the floor and the bell.
What should families near the Sector 16 stadium do on cricket match days?
On cricket match days near the Sector 16 stadium in Chandigarh, move the class to another time or hold it online. The stadium and the Rose Garden sit on Jan Marg, and Sector 16's houses and government housing lie between Madhya Marg and Jan Marg. Weekend mornings suit longer sessions, and online classes keep the weekly routine going when the stadium roads are busy.
How much does home tuition cost in Chandigarh's sectors?
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, which you see before the free demo.
