Class 11 is the year students most often underestimate. There is no board exam at the end of it, the new college or senior school takes a term to settle into, and coaching classes start pulling at evenings. Yet it supplies a good share of what the HSC, JEE, NEET and MHT-CET will test. This guide, by Ajay Vatsyayan, who writes on IB, IGCSE and ISC maths, with the NXTutors Academic Team, explains what Class 11 looks like on each board Pune students follow, why the state CET makes Class 11 chapters count, which subjects need a tutor in each stream, a plan for the first term, and how to keep lessons regular from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Katraj.
For State Board students, Class 11 usually means moving from school to a junior college: new teachers, larger classes and, often, a longer trip across the city. CBSE, ISC and IB students may stay in the same building but meet a very different kind of subject. In maths, functions, limits and vectors replace familiar procedures; in physics, calculus-based reasoning appears; chemistry splits into physical, organic and inorganic strands with different study methods. Any weakness in Class 10 algebra or trigonometry surfaces in the first month. Because the school or college sets the Class 11 exam, a weak year is easy to excuse. It should not be: the next year and every entrance test are built on it.
The HSC examination is conducted at the end of the second year of junior college, by the divisional board on behalf of the Maharashtra State Board, whose head office is in Pune. Std XI is the first half of that course. The board's HSC subject list gives a clear picture of what students in each stream study:

The State CET Cell's syllabus document for MHT-CET says that about 20% of the questions come from Std XI and about 80% from Std XII, and it names the Std XI chapters included. In maths these include trigonometry, straight lines, circles, conic sections, complex numbers, permutations and combinations, probability, functions, limits and continuity; in physics, vectors, motion in a plane, laws of motion and gravitation. JEE and NEET draw on the Class 11 syllabus far more heavily still. So a Class 11 tutor is, in effect, an entrance tutor for these chapters.

Students sometimes switch from CBSE or ICSE to the State Board after Class 10 and join a junior college for the HSC. The board checks eligibility for HSC students coming from other boards, so complete those formalities with the junior college early. Academically, the switch means new textbooks, a different answer style and, for some, papers in a new medium. A tutor's first job is to map what the student already knows against the state books and fill the specific gaps, rather than reteaching everything. Deccan Gymkhana, named after the sports club at its centre, has its own Aqua Line station, which puts it within one change of most of the metro network. Baner, below Baner Hill, pairs office buildings with high-rise societies and depends on road travel until Line 3 opens. Hinjewadi, built around its IT park, suits a tutor from Wakad, Maan or the same township, timed away from office peaks.
