Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Middle school rarely gets the attention that Class 10 does, yet it is where most later difficulties begin. Algebra appears, science splits into physics, chemistry and biology ideas, a third language arrives for many students, and projects start to carry marks. In this guide, Aaditya Kashyap, who writes on CBSE and ICSE science, and the NXTutors Academic Team set out what changes in Classes 6 to 8, how each board handles these years, where marks tend to slip, which habits to build before Class 9, and how to find a tutor in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad whose journey to you will hold up across a whole school year.
Three shifts happen together. First, maths stops being mostly arithmetic: letters stand for numbers, negative numbers appear, and geometry asks for reasons rather than measurements. Second, science textbooks start expecting a student to explain an observation, not just name it. Third, the timetable fills up with more subjects, more teachers and more written work, and a child who coped by remembering the teacher's words now has to read and organise material alone.
A tutor in these years is less about rescue and more about method: how to read a chapter, how to set out a solution, how to revise for a unit test. Children who learn that method in Class 6 or 7 usually need much less help in Class 9.
| Board or programme | What to know | Tutor's focus |
|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra State Board | State textbooks in the school's medium; the board examines at SSC (Class 10) and HSC (Class 12), not in these years | Every textbook exercise, written in full; vocabulary in the medium of instruction |
| CBSE | NCERT's newer middle-school books, Ganita Prakash for maths and Curiosity for science; a three-language framework in which R3 is compulsory from Class 6 from 2026-27 | Activity questions and reasoning, not just answers; steady support in the third language |
| ICSE schools (CISCE) | School-chosen books up to Class 8; a third language from at least Class 5 to Class 8, examined internally | Pace and breadth; neat, complete long answers |
| IB Middle Years Programme | Ages 11 to 16 over five years, eight subject groups, at least 50 teaching hours per group each year | Criteria-based tasks; guidance without writing the work |
| Cambridge Lower Secondary | Typically ages 11 to 14; Checkpoint is an optional assessment | The school's scheme of work and command words |
Board-wide detail is on our Maharashtra Board, CBSE, ICSE and IGCSE pages for Pune.
| Subject | What goes wrong | What a tutor does |
|---|---|---|
| Maths | Sign errors with negative numbers; treating algebra as guesswork; fractions never fully understood | Short daily drills, then word problems turned into equations step by step |
| Science | Memorised definitions with no understanding; diagrams copied without labels that mean anything | Simple experiments at the table, "why" questions, labelled sketches from memory |
| English | Answers lifted word for word from the text; weak paragraph structure | Reading for meaning and writing answers in the student's own words |
| Second or third language | Script and vocabulary falling behind, especially for families new to Pune | A small, regular dose of reading and writing in that language |
| Social science | Long chapters read once, the night before | A weekly summary and map routine rather than full tuition |
For maths and science specifically, our maths and science home tutor pages for Pune go deeper.
Class 9 starts the two-year run to Class 10 on every board. On the State Board, for example, the published evaluation scheme for Std IX and X mathematics splits the subject into Part I and Part II papers of 40 marks each, with 20 internal marks, so a student needs to be comfortable with both algebra and geometry at once. Whatever the board, aim for these by the end of Class 8:
When the time comes, our Class 9 home tutors in Pune page picks up from here.
Projects in these classes carry real marks on most boards, and the IB MYP and ICSE schools in particular build internal assessment into the year. A tutor can help a student understand the brief, plan the stages and check whether the finished work answers the question asked. A tutor should not make the model, write the report or produce the presentation. Apart from the integrity problem, a student who watches someone else do the project learns nothing that helps in Class 9. A simple rule: the tutor may ask questions and point to sources; every word and every cut of the scissors is the student's.
Some middle-school students finish the textbook easily and get bored. For them a tutor's role changes: harder problems from the same chapter, puzzles that need a written argument, and perhaps an Olympiad-style paper now and then. The aim is depth, not racing into Class 9 chapters, which tends to leave gaps and makes school lessons dull. Keep it to one session a week so there is still time for reading, sport and rest. Our Olympiad preparation guide, written for Gurugram families, describes an approach that works equally well in Pune.
| Zone | Typical route | Slot advice |
|---|---|---|
| Kothrud, Karve Nagar & Deccan | One change at District Court links this zone to the Purple Line; Karve Nagar by two-wheeler or city bus | Start before the early-evening slowdown towards Deccan |
| Aundh, Baner & Pashan | Two-wheeler from the next suburb; Bavdhan from Kothrud or Pashan | Chandani Chowk is slow at peak hours; choose an off-peak start |
| Wakad, Hinjewadi & Pimpri-Chinchwad | Purple Line to PCMC Bhavan for Pimpri; road for the IT suburbs | Avoid IT-park shift changes near the bypass |
| Viman Nagar, Kalyani Nagar & Kharadi | Aqua Line to Yerwada, Kalyani Nagar or Ramwadi | River-bridge junctions are busy at office times |
| Koregaon Park, Camp & Wanowrie | Bund Garden station; Swargate as the nearest metro for Salunke Vihar | Check army-area entry rules before the first visit |
| Hadapsar, Kondhwa & NIBM | Local trains to Hadapsar; buses from Gadital; otherwise two-wheeler | Township gates need the cluster and tower number |
| Katraj, Bibwewadi & Sinhagad Road | Swargate on the Purple Line, then an auto; two-wheeler along Sinhagad Road | Name your neighbourhood along the road, not just the road |
Both can work at this age, and the choice depends on the child more than the subject. A student who drifts on a screen, or whose notebook needs watching line by line, does better with a tutor at home. A self-motivated Class 8 student can do well online, especially for a third language or for an IB MYP or Cambridge subject where the right tutor may live far away. In the IT suburbs, where evening roads are slow, one option is to mix a weekend home session with one short online lesson midweek, and switch fully online on the heaviest monsoon days. See our online tutors for Pune students page for the set-up.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For middle school, one tutor for maths and science together often costs less than two specialists, while an IB MYP or Cambridge subject tutor may quote more. Travel at your chosen time also matters. Every fee is shown before the demo; see the pricing guide and home tuition fees in Pune.
Karve Nagar, once called Hingne, has quiet lanes of flats and builder floors off the main road to Warje; with no station, tutors usually ride in from Kothrud or Erandwane. In Bavdhan, beside Chandani Chowk, societies stand alongside older independent houses, and the nearest working metro stop is Vanaz. Pimpri still keeps factories, markets and homes side by side, and PCMC Bhavan on the Purple Line puts tutors from the old city one ride away.
Yerawada is densely built, with homes in pockets between larger campuses, and has its own Aqua Line station. In Magarpatta, a gated township of apartment clusters, the gate wants the tutor's name with your cluster and tower before the first lesson. Along Sinhagad Road, which runs from near Sarasbaug towards the fort, tell us your neighbourhood, such as Vadgaon Budruk or Dhayari, so we can judge the real journey.

A Class 6, 7 or 8 student in Pune does not always need a home tutor. A tutor helps most when algebra or fractions are shaky, when science answers are memorised without understanding, or when a third language falls behind. The main job is method: reading a chapter, setting out a solution and revising for a test.
A middle-school tutor in Pune should usually cover maths first, then science, because both build year on year towards the board course from Class 9. English and languages often need a lighter, regular dose. One tutor can handle maths and science together at this level if both are only slightly behind.
For CBSE Class 6 students in Pune, the 2026-27 curriculum makes a third language, R3, compulsory from Class 6. The framework of R1, R2 and R3 needs at least two languages native to India. NCERT's newer books include Ganita Prakash for maths and Curiosity for science. Check details with your school and cbseacademic.nic.in.
A Pune tutor should help a Class 6 to 8 student understand the project brief, plan the stages and check the finished work answers the question. The tutor should never make the model, write the report or produce the presentation. Projects carry marks on most boards, and the learning happens only if the student does the work.
Yes, Pune families can find tutors who know criteria-based tasks for the IB MYP, and the scheme of work and command words for Cambridge Lower Secondary. These specialists are fewer, so a mix of home and online lessons widens the choice. Share the school's unit plan or scheme so the tutor can follow it.
A Pune Class 8 student should start preparing for Class 9 in the second half of Class 8. Aim for quick fractions, percentages and simple equations, a full maths notebook and a weekly revision routine kept alone. On the State Board, Class 9 maths splits into Part I and Part II, so algebra and geometry both matter.
A Pune tutor working with a Class 6 to 8 student who is ahead should add depth, not race into Class 9 chapters. That means harder problems from the same chapter, puzzles needing a written argument and occasionally an Olympiad-style paper. One session a week leaves time for reading, sport and rest.
Class 6 to 8 tuition in Pune can work at home or online, depending on the child more than the subject. A student who drifts on a screen does better with a tutor at home watching the notebook. A self-motivated Class 8 student can do well online, especially for a third language or an IB MYP subject.
