Where ICSE sits among Belagavi's boards

Maths and the three science papers

ICSE Mathematics is a single 80-mark paper, with a further 20 internal marks from at least two assignments, marked by the teacher and an external examiner. Physics, Chemistry and Biology are three separate 80-mark papers, each with 20 internal practical marks. Three science papers instead of one means three sets of definitions, diagrams and experiments to keep fresh, and a student who is strong in one may be quietly weak in another.

A good ICSE science tutor therefore treats each paper on its own: chemistry equations and tests for ions practised until they are exact, physics numericals written with every step, biology diagrams drawn and labelled from memory. English and the second language

ICSE English asks for more extended writing than many children are used to: compositions, letters, comprehension answers in full sentences and close reading of set texts. A child who reads widely but writes little will find the gap here. Weekly writing, marked line by line for structure, vocabulary and accuracy, is the most useful thing an English tutor can do. Revision in rounds, not one long sweep

The ICSE syllabus for Classes 9 and 10 is long, and a single revision pass in the final term rarely holds. A better plan is three rounds. In the first, during Class 9 and the start of Class 10, every finished chapter is revisited a month later with a short test. In the second, around the middle of Class 10, each subject is revised in full against earlier papers. In the third, the last stretch before the board, timed papers are written and marked, and only the weak chapters are reopened. ISC in Classes 11 and 12: rules worth knowing early

ISC beside the Karnataka CET, JEE or NEET

An ISC science student who also prepares for an entrance test has two very different papers to serve. ISC expects long, well-argued answers; the Karnataka CET, JEE Main and NEET are objective tests under time pressure. The two habits can coexist if the week keeps them apart: one session for written ISC answers and practicals, the rest for timed objective sets. After Class 10: ISC, or a move to PU or CBSE

Some ICSE students in Belagavi continue to ISC; others move to the state PU course or to CBSE for Classes 11 and 12. Each move has a cost worth planning for.
