What to know about the exam, and where to check it

JEE (Main) is conducted by the National Testing Agency. Its 2026 information bulletin described Paper 1 as a test taken on computer, covering mathematics, physics and chemistry. Each subject had 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 with a numerical answer, so the paper held 75 questions for 300 marks. Four marks were given for a correct response and one was taken away for a wrong one, in both sections. There were two sessions, the better score was used, and the paper was offered in 13 languages.

JEE (Advanced) is the second stage for candidates who qualify through Main under its brochure's rules. In 2026 it had two compulsory papers, offered in English and Hindi, and a candidate could attempt it at most twice, in consecutive years. Start with a syllabus map

The first useful thing a tutor can do is turn the official syllabus into a one-page map of the two years. Every chapter of physics, chemistry and mathematics goes on it, marked with three things: whether school has taught it, whether the student has practised it beyond school level, and whether it has been tested under time. The map shows at a glance where the gaps are, and it stops the common pattern of re-reading favourite chapters while harder ones wait.

The map also settles the order. School follows its own sequence; entrance preparation does not have to. A tutor can bring forward chapters that later topics depend on, such as vectors and calculus for mechanics, while keeping pace with what school is examining that term.

The weekly check: what a session should contain

When most of the work happens alone, the tutor's session is where it gets checked. A steady week for a Bikaner student looks something like this:

Past papers: taking them is half the job

Past JEE Main papers are the closest practice to the real thing. The mistake is to take paper after paper without looking back. After each one, the tutor and student sort every lost mark into one of four groups:

• Did not know the idea. The chapter needs teaching again.
• Knew it, slipped in working. Slow down, write units and signs, check the last line.
• Misread the question. Underline what is asked before solving.
• Guessed and lost. With a mark deducted for each wrong multiple-choice answer, a weak guess costs more than leaving it.

Keeping the Class 12 board safe

Board marks matter in their own right, and the board paper asks for something entrance practice does not: full written working.

• Rajasthan board. RBSE prescribes the NCERT physics and mathematics books, so content overlaps closely with the entrance syllabus. In the 2026–27 syllabus, Class 12 mathematics is one 80-mark paper with 20 sessional marks, and calculus alone carries 35 of the 80. Choosing the paper language early

Many Bikaner students learn science in Hindi at school, in English, or in a mix of both. The JEE Main bulletin lists the languages the paper can be taken in, and JEE Advanced in 2026 was offered in English and Hindi. Decide the paper language in Class 11, not in the final term, and then use it every time: in the mistakes notebook, in timed sets and in the words the tutor uses for each idea.

A student who reads problems in English but thinks in Hindi can still do well, as long as the technical terms are learnt in the language of the paper. Ask for a tutor who is comfortable in that language, and say so in the request; it narrows the match more usefully than almost anything else. Board answers follow the medium of the school, which may differ, so the tutor should know both lists of terms.

Physics and mathematics problems are easiest to fix when the tutor watches the working line by line, which favours a home session. Chemistry recall, quick doubt checks and reviewing a finished timed set work well online. A specialist teaching from another city can also be the right choice for harder entrance problems when nobody nearby fits; families elsewhere in Rajasthan, such as Jaipur and Jodhpur, often mix the two in the same way. 2. Bring two problems your child could not solve, with the attempt written. Did the tutor find the broken step?
3. Did the tutor explain how to treat doubtful multiple-choice questions, given the negative marking?

5. Can the tutor hold the same weekly slot from where they live, through the summer too?
