Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Most school students in Vasai, Nalasopara and Virar write the state's public examinations, set by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education: the SSC after Standard X, and the HSC two years later after Standard XII. Those papers have habits of their own. SSC science arrives as two separate part papers, HSC science gives a choice of questions in nearly every section, and no calculator is allowed. This page draws only on what the board itself publishes at mahahsscboard.in, and explains how a home tutor can use that material from Standard IX to the HSC. Schemes do get revised, so treat this as a map and the board's own site as the final word.
The board is headquartered in Pune, and its papers carry that name. For administration it works through divisions. Vasai-Virar lies in Palghar district, and in the board's own SSC results statistics for March 2024, Palghar is listed under the Mumbai division, alongside Thane, Raigad and Greater Mumbai. In practice, the school or junior college handles contact with the division, so a family rarely needs to approach it directly; what matters is knowing that the papers your child sits are the same state papers set for every district.
Two terms are worth pinning down. The SSC, or Secondary School Certificate examination, is taken in Standard X. The HSC, or Higher Secondary Certificate examination, is taken in Standard XII, usually after two years at a junior college. Everything else on this page hangs on those two examinations.
On the board's SSC list, three subjects form the academic core: Social Sciences carries code 73, Science and Technology 72, and Mathematics 71. Around them sit the languages, which are covered below, and a set of pre-vocational subjects under the national skills framework, such as Automotive Service Technician, Tourism and Hospitality, Agriculture, Electronics and Hardware, and Health Care. A child taking one of these still needs the core subjects; ask the school how the vocational subject fits into the timetable.
For tuition, the three core subjects usually come first, and maths and science in particular. If your child is in Standard IX, start there: the board publishes one combined scheme for Standards IX and X in these subjects, so the habits built in Standard IX carry straight into the SSC year. For subject-level help, see maths home tutors in Vasai-Virar and science home tutors in Vasai-Virar.
Science and Technology is examined in two parts. The board's revised scheme for Part 1 describes a two-hour paper of 40 marks, built like this:
| Question | What it asks | Choice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (A) | Five one-mark multiple-choice questions based on the textbook | None; only the first attempt is marked |
| 1 (B) | Five one-mark items such as filling blanks | None |
| 2 (A) | Two-mark "give scientific reasons" questions | Any two of three |
| 2 (B) | Two-mark questions | Any three of five |
| 3 | Three-mark questions, four from physics units and four from chemistry units | Any five of eight |
| 4 | Five-mark questions | Any one of two |
The instructions carry three practical lessons. Multiple-choice answers are written as the option number, and a changed answer earns nothing, so a student must decide before writing. Diagrams must be scientifically correct and labelled, which takes regular practice, not a last-week rush. And each main question starts on a new page, which sounds trivial until a hurried student forgets it. A tutor should set timed part papers in exactly this shape, and mark them against the scheme.
Marathi, Hindi and Gujarati are all spoken at home across Vasai-Virar, and children study in Marathi or English medium; some children in the older villages of Virar West study in Marathi medium. The board's language lists reflect that variety. Twelve languages can be taken as the first language, among them Marathi, Hindi, English, Gujarati and Urdu, as well as several south and east Indian languages, Sindhi and Punjabi. The second and third language list adds options such as Sanskrit, Pali, Ardhamagadhi, Persian, Arabic, German, French and Russian, and there are composite papers that pair two languages, such as Marathi with Hindi, Hindi with Sanskrit, or Hindi with Gujarati.
After the SSC, most State Board students join a junior college. Every HSC student takes languages and two compulsory subjects, Health and Physical Education (30) and Environment Education and Water Security (31). The optional subjects on the board's list fall into the familiar streams:
| Usual stream | Subject and code |
|---|---|
| Science | Biology (56), Chemistry (55), Physics (54), Information Technology for Science (97), and Mathematics and Statistics for Arts and Science (40) |
| Commerce | Accountancy, listed as Book Keeping and Accountancy (50); Maths and Statistics for Commerce (88); Economics (49); Secretarial Practice (52); Co-operation (53); Organisation of Commerce and Management (51); Information Technology for Commerce (99) |
| Arts | History (38), Geography (39), Political Science (42), Sociology (45), Philosophy (46), Logic (47), Psychology (48), Economics (49), Information Technology for Arts (98) |
| Bi-focal | Vocational subjects such as Electrical Maintenance, Banking and Office Management |
Two details catch families out. The commerce version of Maths and Statistics (88) is a different subject from the Arts and Science version (40), so a maths tutor must know which one your child takes. And Information Technology exists in three versions, one per stream. If the stream itself is still undecided, read our board and stream guide before Standard XI begins.
The board's evaluation pattern for physics, chemistry and biology in Standards XI and XII sets four sections. The first holds ten one-mark multiple-choice questions and eight very short answers. The second offers twelve two-mark questions, of which any eight are answered; the third, twelve three-mark questions, again any eight; the fourth, five four-mark long answers, any three. Log tables may be used, calculators may not, and each multiple-choice answer is written out with its letter.
| Area | Units | Marks (without option) |
|---|---|---|
| Physical chemistry | Solid state, solutions, ionic equilibria, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, kinetics | 26 |
| Inorganic chemistry | Groups 16, 17 and 18; transition and inner transition elements; coordination compounds | 17 |
| Organic chemistry | Halogen derivatives; alcohols, phenols and ethers; aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids; amines | 18 |
| Applied chemistry | Biomolecules, polymers, green chemistry and nanochemistry | 9 |
The chemistry and biology schemes both spread marks, with options, at about 30% for knowledge, 42% for understanding and 28% for application and skill, and grade about half the paper as average difficulty and a fifth as difficult. Recall alone, in other words, covers less than a third. The chemistry scheme also gives formats for a 25-mark unit test and a 50-mark terminal exam in the junior college, and makes the Balbharati practical notebook-cum-journal compulsory. A tutor should treat the journal as part of the subject, checking entries through the year rather than in the last week.
For other boards, see CBSE home tutors and ICSE and ISC tutors in Vasai-Virar.
| Standard | Focus | Usual rhythm |
|---|---|---|
| IX | Both science parts and maths from the start; labelled diagrams; answers in the textbook's terms | Two lessons a week |
| X (SSC) | Timed part papers in the board's shape; "scientific reasons" practice; steady social sciences and language revision | Two or three lessons a week |
| XI | Settling into junior college; unit tests and terminal exams; the first journal entries | One or two per subject |
| XII (HSC) | Full four-section papers without a calculator; the journal; a plan for MHT-CET, JEE or NEET where relevant | Two per core subject near the exam |
Science students should know that MHT-CET, run by the State CET Cell, has PCM and PCB groups, so the choice of maths, biology or both in Standard XI matters later. See MHT-CET tutors in Mumbai, and our JEE and NEET home tutor pages for Vasai-Virar. Subject help for the HSC sciences is on our physics, chemistry and biology pages.
A weekly tutor has to manage the journey every week, so we match on the same side of the railway line first. Notes from our zone guides:
Every locality is on our Vasai-Virar home tutors page, and the Vasai-Virar home tuition guide goes zone by zone. Across Vasai Creek, Mira-Bhayandar has its own page, and the Maharashtra Board tutors in Mumbai page covers the rest of the Mumbai division. Families elsewhere in the state can see our Pune, Nashik and Nagpur pages.
The board asks for labelled, scientifically correct diagrams, and those are fixed fastest when the tutor sits beside the student and sees the pencil. That makes home lessons the natural choice for SSC science and geometry. Junior college changes the picture: once part of each day goes on the train or a city bus, one home lesson and one shorter online lesson a week is often easier to sustain. Online also opens up commerce specialists, for accountancy or the commerce version of maths, who may not live nearby. See online tuition in Vasai-Virar.
We send two or three matched tutors and show each fee before the demo; the first class is free, and switching tutor later is free. The demo class checklist has more questions.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fees, and every fee is shown before the demo. For detail, read the pricing guide or our Vasai-Virar fees post.

Vasai-Virar is in Palghar district, which the board lists under its Mumbai division, together with Thane, Raigad and Greater Mumbai. In practice the school or junior college deals with the division, and the SSC and HSC papers are the same state papers everywhere. Check details on mahahsscboard.in.
The board's revised scheme gives Part 1 two hours and 40 marks. It opens with ten one-mark items, then two-mark "scientific reasons" and short questions with a choice, three-mark questions split between physics and chemistry units, and one five-mark answer from two. Only the first attempt at a multiple-choice question is marked.
Yes, ask for it in the request, and check it in the demo with a written answer. Some children in the older villages, such as Agashi and Arnala, study in Marathi medium, and their written answers must use the Marathi terms from the state textbook. A tutor may explain in another language, but practice answers should match the examiner's words.
Every HSC student takes languages plus two compulsory subjects on the board's list: Health and Physical Education, and Environment Education and Water Security. The optional subjects then follow the stream, such as physics, chemistry, biology and maths for science, or accountancy, economics and commerce maths for commerce.
No, they are separate subjects on the board's HSC list, so a tutor must know which one your child takes. Mathematics and Statistics for Arts and Science has code 40, while Maths and Statistics for Commerce has code 88. Confirm the code in the demo before planning lessons.
The board's pattern sets four sections in each paper. Ten one-mark multiple-choice questions and eight very short answers come first, then any eight of twelve two-mark questions, any eight of twelve three-mark questions and any three of five four-mark answers. Log tables are allowed, but calculators are not.
The board's Standard XII chemistry scheme makes the Balbharati practical notebook-cum-journal compulsory. A tutor should check entries and explain each experiment through the year, while the student does the writing. Keeping the journal current avoids a rush just before the practical exam.
Many do, because MHT-CET, run by the State CET Cell, draws on the same science subjects. It has PCM and PCB groups, so the choice of maths, biology or both in Standard XI matters. A tutor can share practice between the HSC and the entrance test and add timed papers later.
