Five situations where online suits a Mysuru student

1. A narrow specialism. IB Higher Level, Cambridge IGCSE, an ISC elective, II PUC computer science or electronics, or Advanced-level JEE problems: any one zone of the city may hold few tutors who teach these well. 2. The far side of the city. A tutor living in Bogadi can reach Dattagalli easily along the Ring Road, but a weekly evening trip to Bannimantap or Siddhartha Layout is another matter. When the right teacher is on the wrong side, the screen removes the problem.
3. Late evenings in the PU years. College, coaching and the ride home can fill a II PUC student's day. A focused session on screen after dinner is realistic; a tutor arriving at that hour usually is not.
4. Dasara and heavy rain. During Dasara the route towards the parade grounds and parts of the centre are very crowded, and the wettest days make any ride slower. Families with an online arrangement simply carry on.

Online is a tool, not a rule. Young children, roughly up to Class 5, learn reading, handwriting and number work most easily with someone beside them watching the pencil. A student who drifts to other tabs during online school will drift in paid tuition too. A child who has just changed boards, from SSLC to CBSE or ICSE to ISC, usually needs a few weeks of side-by-side work before gaps become visible. And for maths, physics, chemistry or accountancy, a lesson without a clear view of the student's working is not worth having, so if the camera cannot show the notebook, stay at home. Any of these can change: a younger child can move online once the habits are firm, and a board-changer after the first month.

How to tell an online lesson is working

Listen for who is doing the work: in a useful session the student speaks and writes for most of the time. Errors are stopped partway, more often by a question than by the tutor fixing them. Nobody switches the camera off. The material is the school's own tests, the board's model papers or past papers, not generic worksheets. And each lesson ends with a short written note: what was done, and what to practise before next time. A tutor who reads from slides for the whole hour is giving a lecture, not tuition. Mixing home and online with one tutor

Many Mysuru families end up with a blend rather than a choice. Some patterns that work well:

• One home visit, one screen session. Fresh topics and extended pen-and-paper work in person at the weekend; queries and homework review on screen midweek.
• Home through the term, online before exams. A brief call on the eve of each paper, so nobody travels during the exam weeks.
