Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Middle school feels low-stakes, which is exactly why gaps open there unnoticed. Fractions are half understood, algebra arrives as a set of tricks, and science turns from stories about plants into measurement and reasoning. Our Ahmedabad city page puts it simply: the jump in maths and science comes in Class 9, and whatever is shaky before then resurfaces in the board year. This guide by Aaditya Kashyap, who writes on CBSE and ICSE science, and the NXTutors Academic Team covers what changes in Class 6, how each board handles these three years, which subjects deserve a tutor, the habits to have in place before Class 9, and how to keep lessons regular across the city's seven zones.
Three things shift at once. Subjects split up and are taught by different teachers, so nobody sees the whole child any more. Maths moves from calculating to reasoning: negative numbers, ratio, the first letters standing for numbers, and geometry with reasons attached. And science stops being mostly description, asking students to measure, compare, predict and explain. A child who coasted through Class 5 on a good memory can find, by the middle of Class 7, that memory alone no longer gets the marks.
The useful response is not more hours but the right ones: a tutor who finds the specific weak idea, such as equivalent fractions or the meaning of an equals sign, and repairs it before the next chapter builds on it.
| Board | What shapes these years | Implication for a tutor |
|---|---|---|
| Gujarat state board schools | State textbooks taught in the school's medium, often Gujarati or English; the SSC at the end of Std 10 is set by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board | Teach from the school's own books in the same medium; from Std 9 the board's subject-wise question bank becomes useful |
| CBSE | NCERT books such as Ganita Prakash for maths and Curiosity for science; a three-language framework with the third language compulsory from Class 6 from 2026-27 | Follow the new books' activity-based style and leave time for the third language |
| ICSE (CISCE) | Schools choose their own books up to Class 8; a third language runs at least from Class 5 to Class 8 and is examined internally | Use your child's actual textbooks; expect more written answers than in CBSE |
| IB Middle Years Programme | A five-year programme for ages eleven to sixteen across eight subject groups, each with at least fifty teaching hours a year | Help with criteria-based tasks and projects; never do the work for the student |
| Cambridge Lower Secondary | Usually ages eleven to fourteen, with Checkpoint as an optional assessment | Build towards IGCSE habits: reading questions closely and showing working |
Our board pages for Ahmedabad go further: Gujarat Board, CBSE, ICSE, IB and IGCSE.
By the end of Class 8, a student heading into any board's Class 9 course should be able to tick off most of this list. A middle-school tutor's real job is to make it happen:
For students on the state board, Std 9 is the point where the board's own subject-wise question bank starts to apply, and the past SSC maths papers in the board's online archive appear at two levels, Standard and Basic. Neither matters yet, but a student who already writes clear steps will handle both comfortably.
Schools on every board now ask for models, charts, surveys and presentations. A tutor can help your child choose a manageable topic, plan the steps, find reliable sources and practise explaining the result. A tutor should not build the model, write the report or design the chart. Teachers notice adult work, and the student loses the skill the project was meant to teach. In IB MYP schools in particular, projects are judged against published criteria, and the student needs to own every part.
Some students finish school maths early and grow bored. Racing ahead through the next year's textbook rarely helps; it leaves them bored again next year. Better options are harder problems on the same topics, puzzles that need reasoning rather than procedure, reading beyond the syllabus in science, and an introduction to writing proofs in geometry. A tutor who teaches this way also builds the problem-solving that entrance tests reward in Classes 11 and 12, without turning a twelve-year-old's evenings into coaching.
| Zone | Station or road | After-school hour that tends to hold |
|---|---|---|
| Navrangpura, Paldi & Ellisbridge | Gandhigram, Paldi and Shreyas on the Red Line; Old High Court for the Blue Line | Before the bridge approaches slow down at office time |
| Satellite, Vastrapur & Bodakdev | Thaltej, Thaltej Gam and Doordarshan Kendra in the north; road and BRTS in the south | Late afternoon, or a weekend morning for a longer session |
| Prahlad Nagar, Bopal & Shela | No metro; ring road and BRTS Route 17 | Late afternoon, before the ring-road junctions fill |
| Naranpura, Gota & Chandkheda | Vijay Nagar, AEC, Sabarmati and Motera Stadium on the Red Line | Early, before Vijay Char Rasta crowds up |
| Maninagar, Isanpur & Kankaria | Maninagar and Vatva railway stations, Kankaria East metro, BRTS | Straight after school, ahead of the market-road evening |
| Nikol, Naroda & Bapunagar | Vastral Gam, Nirant Cross Road, Rabari Colony and Amraiwadi stations | Mid-evening, clear of industrial shift changes |
| Shahibaug, Asarwa & Meghaninagar | Asarva railway station; otherwise Airport Road and Camp Road | Evening, agreed in advance, given all-day campus traffic |
Both work at this age, for different children. A home tutor suits a student who drifts, needs someone to watch the working, or is rebuilding basics in maths. Online suits a self-motivated student, a language tutor who lives across the city, or an IB MYP specialist who is simply not in your zone. A common Ahmedabad pattern is one home session at the weekend plus a shorter online check-in midweek, with the same tutor. Our online tutors for Ahmedabad students page explains the set-up.
The first lesson with your chosen tutor is free, and switching later is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For middle school, the number of subjects, the board, the tutor's experience and the trip to your home decide where a quote sits. Tutors set their own fees and you see each one before the demo; read our pricing guide and home tuition fees in Ahmedabad.
Ellisbridge, named after the river crossing rebuilt in steel in 1892, has Gandhigram station on the Red Line, with Old High Court one stop north. Thaltej, which grew outward from an old village and its lake, sits at the western end of the Blue Line, so tutors can ride across from Navrangpura or the east. Bopal expanded quickly from a village into a large suburb of gated societies; a BRTS route links it to Shivranjani, but most tutors come by two-wheeler.
Sabarmati, along the river in the north, is served by its Red Line station, with Motera Stadium one stop beyond. Ghodasar, a quiet apartment locality in the south-east, has no metro, so tutors use the road or Maninagar station. And Asarwa, an older neighbourhood next to Shahibaug, has its own station on the Udaipur line, though most tutors arrive by road.

Not always. A tutor is worth it when a specific gap keeps returning, usually fractions, negative numbers or early algebra, or when science answers are memorised but not understood. These years feed directly into the Class 9 course, so it is cheaper to repair a weak idea now than to rebuild it during the board years.
Maths, in most cases, because every new chapter depends on the last and a Class 6 gap multiplies by Class 8. Science comes next if reasoning, not memory, is the problem. English writing and a second or third language, such as Gujarati, Hindi or Sanskrit, often need only a few weeks of focused practice.
CBSE schools use NCERT books such as Ganita Prakash and Curiosity and, from 2026-27, a compulsory third language from Class 6. State-board schools teach from state textbooks in the school's medium, often Gujarati or English, ahead of the SSC set by the Gujarat board. A tutor should use your child's own books.
A tutor can help choose a topic, plan the steps, find reliable sources and practise the presentation. The tutor should not build the model or write the report. Teachers notice adult work, and the student misses the skill the project was meant to build. In IB MYP schools, the student must own every part of the work.
Usually not. Racing through next year's textbook only creates boredom later. Harder problems on current topics, reasoning puzzles, wider science reading and simple geometry proofs stretch a strong student better, and they build the problem-solving that matters in Classes 11 and 12 without adding a coaching schedule to a twelve-year-old's week.
Yes, for a self-motivated student or for a specialist who does not live nearby, such as a language or IB MYP tutor. A student who drifts or is rebuilding maths basics usually does better with a tutor at the table. Many Ahmedabad families combine a weekend home lesson with a short online session midweek.
