ICSE maths tutor in Ahmedabad: a wide syllabus, a two-section paper and a method that must be written down

In a city where a large share of students write the Gujarat board's SSC, and many others CBSE, an ICSE student can find that neighbours' tutors and guidebooks fit only part of what they need. ICSE maths covers chapters other boards leave out, such as shares and dividends, recurring deposits, matrices and loci; its board paper reaches every chapter through a compulsory first section; and CISCE examiners reward working laid out step by step. This page explains how the subject is built from Class 6 to Class 10, what the board paper looks like, how ISC maths changes in Classes 11 and 12, and how to find a tutor who can reach your home in Ahmedabad. Abhinandan Tiwary, who covers Class 10 CBSE and ICSE maths on NXTutors, wrote the ICSE sections, and Ajay Vatsyayan, who covers IB, IGCSE and ISC maths, wrote the ISC section. The page sits under maths home tutors in Ahmedabad and the ICSE and ISC tutors in Ahmedabad hub.

Where ICSE maths parts company with other boards

Quadratics, trigonometry, circles and statistics look much the same on every board. The differences lie elsewhere, and they decide whether a tutor is a good fit.

  • More chapters. Commercial mathematics (GST, recurring deposits, shares and dividends), matrices, reflection and loci are part of ICSE Class 10. A tutor who has only taught GSEB or CBSE may need to prepare these afresh.
  • No single textbook. CISCE sets the syllabus and schools choose books from publishers who follow it. Bring your child's own book to the first lesson, because chapter order and exercises vary.
  • Working is examined. CISCE papers state that omitting essential working loses marks, and examiners award marks for each correct step.

Classes 6 to 9: build the habits before Class 10

The middle years are where an ICSE student either learns to write mathematics properly or learns to skip lines. A tutor for Classes 6 to 8 should spend as much effort on layout as on answers: each step on its own line, units carried, diagrams labelled, and a short reason beside every geometry step. Fractions, ratio, simple equations and basic geometry need to be secure before Class 9.

Class 9 is the real step up. Algebra becomes heavier, proofs appear in geometry, and early versions of Class 10 chapters arrive. Students who struggle in Class 9 rarely catch up during the board year without help, so this is a sensible time to start, with one or two sessions a week.

The Class 10 chapters and where marks usually slip

ICSE Class 10 Mathematics, grouped as the syllabus groups it
AreaMain chaptersWhere marks leak
Commercial mathsGST; recurring deposits; shares and dividendsUsing market value where face value is needed, and the reverse
AlgebraInequations, quadratics, ratio and proportion, factor and remainder theorems, matrices, AP and GPMatrix products in the wrong order; inequation answers given without the solution set
Coordinate geometryReflection, section and mid-point formulas, equation of a lineSign errors after reflecting in an axis
GeometrySimilarity, loci, circle theorems, constructionsStatements without reasons; construction arcs rubbed out
MensurationCylinders, cones, spheres and combined solids; recastingRadius taken for diameter; units lost
TrigonometryIdentities; heights and distancesSkipped steps in proofs; no diagram for heights and distances
Statistics and probabilityMean, median, mode, histograms, ogives; probabilityCareless reading of the median or quartiles from an ogive

Commercial maths repays an early start, because once the patterns are clear its questions become reliable marks. Our ICSE Class 10 maths guide works through the chapters one by one.

The Class 10 board paper: two sections, eighty marks

The theory paper is worth 80 marks; the remaining 20 come from internal assessment during the year. On the CISCE specimen paper for 2026, Section A is compulsory and worth 40 marks, made of short questions, multiple-choice items among them, drawn from across the syllabus. Section B, also worth 40 marks, offers longer multi-part questions, of which the student answers any four.

The first section means no chapter is safe to skip. The second means choosing is itself a skill. A practical routine: read every Section B question in the first few minutes, pick four, and stay with them. Mock papers set by the tutor should be timed with that decision built in. ICSE past papers and the specimen paper should be the core practice set.

Showing working: the habit ICSE marks depend on

Because examiners give credit step by step, a student who writes only the final answer risks losing most of a question even when the answer is right. Four habits help:

  1. Write the formula first, then substitute, then simplify, each on its own line.
  2. Give a reason for every geometry statement, in the standard short form.
  3. Keep rough work on the answer sheet, where examiners can see it, rather than on a scrap.
  4. Finish with units and a sentence for word problems in commercial maths and mensuration.

A tutor should mark homework as an examiner would, circling where a step is missing even when the answer is correct.

Pacing the board year follows from this. Aim to finish first teaching of every chapter while the school is still on its own syllabus, then switch to mixed practice: a Section A set each week to keep all chapters warm, and one or two Section B questions timed on their own. Plan the weeks around Uttarayan in mid-January so the move to full papers is not interrupted, and keep the final stretch for complete timed papers, each reviewed line by line for missing steps rather than only for wrong answers.

ICSE beside GSEB and CBSE in Ahmedabad

Families sometimes compare ICSE with the Gujarat board their neighbours' children write. GSEB Standard 10 maths is an 80-mark paper that opens with 24 compulsory one-mark items and offers a choice in every later section, with a Standard and a Basic version; ICSE puts 40 marks in one compulsory section and gives choice only in the second. CBSE has its own pattern again. A tutor who moves between boards needs to know which paper your child will actually sit.

After Class 10, an ICSE student in Ahmedabad may continue with ISC, move to the Gujarat board's HSC Science or General stream, or join a CBSE school. Our Gujarat Board tutors and CBSE home tutors pages for Ahmedabad set out those routes, and the guide to choosing a board and stream compares them.

ISC maths in Classes 11 and 12

For students who stay with CISCE, ISC maths is a large step up. Class 12 is assessed through an 80-mark theory paper and 20 marks of project work. From the 2027 examination, all candidates cover the same seven compulsory units, without the earlier choice between Sections B and C, taking in relations and functions, algebra, calculus, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability. Commerce-minded students can take ISC Applied Mathematics, a separate subject.

Class 11 lays down functions, limits and the start of calculus, and gaps left there resurface in Class 12. ISC students preparing for JEE can plan both with one tutor; see JEE home tutors in Ahmedabad, the national ISC maths tutor page and our ICSE and ISC maths guide.

Our East Ahmedabad tuition guide and the Ahmedabad home tutors page list the remaining localities, including the Shahibaug, Asarwa and Meghaninagar zone.

Home or online for ICSE maths

ICSE geometry constructions and step-by-step working are easiest to correct at the table, which favours home lessons, especially in Classes 9 and 10. Online lessons suit Section A drills, commercial-maths practice and reviewing past papers, and they widen the choice when an experienced ICSE tutor is not within easy reach of your locality. For ISC calculus, a mix is common. See our guide to home versus online tutoring.

A short checklist for the ICSE maths demo

  1. ICSE experience. Ask which ICSE classes the tutor has taught recently, and which textbook series they know.
  2. Commercial maths. Ask for a quick shares-and-dividends question and listen for how face value and market value are explained.
  3. Working. See whether the tutor insists on each step and on reasons in geometry.
  4. Section B strategy. Ask how they teach choosing four questions under time pressure.
  5. ISC readiness. For Class 11 and 12, ask about the seven-unit syllabus and the project.
  6. The route. Which road or station, and what changes in Uttarayan week.

The demo class checklist adds general questions for any subject.

Fees and getting started

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Middle-school ICSE maths usually sits lower in that band than ISC Class 12, and the travel involved matters too. The pricing guide and home tuition fees in Ahmedabad explain more.

ICSE Maths Tutor in Ahmedabad (Classes 6–10 & ISC): common questions

How much does an ICSE maths home tutor charge in Ahmedabad?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. In Ahmedabad, middle-school ICSE maths usually sits lower in that band than ISC Class 12, and travel matters too.

How do I book an ICSE maths tutor in Ahmedabad, and is the first class free?

How is the ICSE Class 10 maths board paper set out for Ahmedabad students?

The ICSE Class 10 maths paper Ahmedabad students sit is worth 80 marks, with 20 more from internal assessment. On the CISCE 2026 specimen, Section A is compulsory and worth 40 marks, including multiple-choice items from across the syllabus. In Section B, also 40 marks, the student answers any four longer questions, and essential working must be shown.

Which ICSE Class 10 maths chapters cost Ahmedabad students the most marks?

Commercial maths, especially shares and dividends, plus matrices, loci and constructions cost Ahmedabad ICSE students the most marks. Typical slips are using market value where face value is needed, multiplying matrices in the wrong order, and geometry statements without reasons. Commercial maths becomes reliable marks once its patterns are clear, so start it early.

Can a GSEB or CBSE maths tutor in Ahmedabad teach ICSE maths?

Some GSEB or CBSE maths tutors in Ahmedabad can teach ICSE maths, but ICSE adds GST, recurring deposits, shares and dividends, matrices, reflection and loci. CISCE also has no single textbook, so chapter order varies by publisher. In the demo, ask for a shares-and-dividends question and watch how the tutor lays out the working.

How does ICSE maths compare with GSEB Standard 10 maths in Ahmedabad?

ICSE and GSEB Standard 10 maths papers in Ahmedabad differ mainly in where choice sits. GSEB opens its 80-mark paper with 24 compulsory one-mark items and offers choice in every later section, with Standard and Basic versions. ICSE puts 40 marks in one compulsory section and gives choice only in Section B.

Why does showing working matter so much in ICSE maths for Ahmedabad students?

Showing working matters in ICSE maths because CISCE examiners give credit step by step, so an Ahmedabad student who writes only the answer can lose most of a question. Write the formula, substitute and simplify on separate lines, give a reason for each geometry step, keep rough work on the sheet, and finish with units.

When should an Ahmedabad child start ICSE maths tuition?

Class 9 is the most common time for an Ahmedabad child to start ICSE maths tuition, because algebra gets heavier, geometry proofs appear and Class 10 chapters begin. Starting in Classes 6 to 8 helps if layout or basics are weak. One or two sessions a week suits Class 9; the board year often needs two.

What changes in ISC maths from 2027 for Ahmedabad students?

From the 2027 examination, every ISC maths candidate in Ahmedabad covers the same seven compulsory units, with no choice between Sections B and C. The units take in relations and functions, algebra, calculus, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability. Class 12 has an 80-mark theory paper plus 20 marks of project work.

Is home or online ICSE maths tuition more useful in Ahmedabad?

Home ICSE maths tuition in Ahmedabad is usually more useful in Classes 9 and 10, because constructions and step-by-step working are easiest to correct at the table. Online suits Section A drills, commercial-maths practice and past-paper review, and widens choice when an experienced ICSE tutor is far from your locality. ISC calculus often mixes both.
