What home tuition costs in Ahmedabad

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

IGCSE tutors in Ahmedabad: command words, tiers and past papers, at home or online

A GSEB Class 10 student taught in Gujarati and a Cambridge IGCSE student in the same society need very different tutors, even when both are "doing maths". The IGCSE student is graded subject by subject, on papers that reward reading command words closely, entering the right tier and practising past papers against the official mark scheme. This page explains how Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE courses are examined, what command words and tiers mean for your child, how IGCSE compares with GSEB and CBSE, and how home and online tutoring work across Ahmedabad's zones, on both sides of the Sabarmati. It is written by Ajay Vatsyayan, who teaches IB, IGCSE and ISC maths on NXTutors.

Cambridge, Edexcel and the syllabus code

IGCSE is usually taught over Grades 9 and 10. The school enters each subject with an awarding body, Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, and some schools use both. Every subject is its own qualification, with a code, papers and a grade; Cambridge designs a syllabus for roughly 130 guided learning hours. The code is the single most useful thing to tell a tutor.

Common IGCSE codes and how they are examined
SubjectCambridgeEdexcel International GCSE
Maths0580: Core or Extended; one non-calculator and one calculator paper; A* to G4MA1: Foundation or Higher; calculator on both papers; 9 to 1
Physics, Chemistry, Biology0625, 0620, 0610: Core or Extended; multiple choice, theory and a practical component4PH1, 4CH1, 4BI1: untiered; two written papers

Our Cambridge vs Edexcel comparison sets the two side by side, paper by paper.

Command words: where IGCSE marks are won and lost

IGCSE questions open with a command word, and the mark scheme rewards an answer that does exactly what that word asks. Students from board schools often know the science and still lose marks here.

Three command words that are often confused
WordWhat the examiner wantsCommon slip
DescribeWhat happens or what the data shows, stated clearlyGiving reasons nobody asked for and missing the pattern
ExplainWhy it happens, linking cause and effectRestating the observation in different words
SuggestA reasoned idea applied to an unfamiliar situationSearching for a memorised answer that does not exist

A good tutor builds this into every session: each practice question is marked against the published scheme, and the student learns to read the command word before the content.

Choosing and earning the right tier

Cambridge maths is entered at Core, which sits Papers 1 and 3 and caps the grade at C, or Extended, which sits Papers 2 and 4 and runs from A* to E. Cambridge sciences add Supplement content at Extended, giving access to A*, while Core ends at C. Edexcel maths offers Foundation, aimed at grades 5 to 1, and Higher, aimed at 9 to 4.

The school usually settles the tier during Grade 10 on the evidence of tests. That makes Grade 9 the important year for a student near the boundary: the tutor's job is to get them reliably working at the higher tier's level before the decision. Ask the school how and when it decides.

Cambridge science, component by component

A Cambridge physics, chemistry or biology candidate sits three components. The multiple-choice paper has 40 questions in 45 minutes and carries 30% of the grade. The theory paper is worth 80 marks over an hour and a quarter and carries 50%. The practical component, chosen by the school, is either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper, 40 marks and 20%. Each needs its own practice: timed multiple-choice sets with a reason for every wrong option, theory answers checked against mark-scheme key words, and practical skills such as planning, tables with units, graphs and comments on reliability. Edexcel's sciences have no separate practical exam; the two written papers test practical understanding along with longer answers.

IGCSE beside GSEB and CBSE

A large share of Ahmedabad's students study under GSEB, in Gujarati, English or another medium, and many others under CBSE. Broadly, both boards lead to one public exam per stage built on prescribed textbooks, while IGCSE awards separate grades written to published syllabuses and mark schemes. Content overlaps substantially; answer style, calculator rules and practical assessment differ. A student switching into IGCSE from Gujarati-medium study also has to learn scientific vocabulary in English, which a patient tutor can build alongside the subject.

Looking ahead, a student moving after Grade 10 to the IB Diploma benefits from Extended maths and graphic-calculator habits; one moving to GSEB or CBSE for Class 11 needs fast hand calculation and textbook-style working. Our switching guide covers both directions, and IB tutors in Ahmedabad explains the Diploma.

A two-year IGCSE plan

Grade 9 and Grade 10, stage by stage
StageMain workWhat you should see
Grade 9, opening monthsCommand words; calculator and non-calculator habits; past questions by topicAn error log in your child's own hand
Grade 9, laterHigher-tier topics for students near the boundarySchool tests pitched at the higher tier
Grade 10, before mocksFinishing content; practical skills in scienceTopic tests marked with the official scheme
Grade 10, after mocksFull papers under time; every lost mark loggedRepeat errors falling week by week

Plan back from the series your child is entered for, since a March entry leaves a shorter run after the mocks than June.

How to tell whether an hour of tuition was well spent

After any session, your child should be able to answer three questions: what went wrong last week and why, what was learnt today, and which past-paper questions were attempted and how many marks they earned against the official scheme. If those answers are vague, the session probably drifted. A good IGCSE tutor keeps a running list of topics covered and errors that recur, sets a small, specific piece of homework, and sends you a line after each session. In the sciences, the practical component deserves a regular slot of its own, since its skills repeat from paper to paper and are easy to neglect while theory feels more urgent.

Fitting IGCSE into an Ahmedabad year

International schools keep their own terms, so build the plan from your school's calendar and the exam series rather than from the GSEB or CBSE board season. Local festivals still shape the evenings: Navratri and the Diwali break in the autumn, and Uttarayan in January, which for a March or June candidate falls in the busiest stretch of revision. Agree lesson times for those weeks at the start, and keep an online fallback ready so a festival week does not become a lost week.

Online lessons open up IGCSE specialists from across India, and our zone notes describe families pairing a nearby home tutor with an online specialist. Travel decides how much can happen at home:

Checks for the free demo

  1. Code and tier: say "0620 Extended" and ask the tutor to describe the papers.
  2. Marking live: one past-paper answer, marked against the official scheme.
  3. Command words: ask how "explain" differs from "describe".
  4. Practical skills: how would they prepare your child for the school's chosen practical component?
  5. Language: for a child from Gujarati-medium study, how will they build English science vocabulary?

IGCSE Tutor in Ahmedabad (Cambridge & Edexcel): common questions

How do I find an IGCSE tutor in Ahmedabad?

Tell us the awarding body, syllabus code and tier, for example Cambridge 0580 Extended, with the grade, your locality and free slots. We shortlist two or three tutors who know that course, show each fee first, and the first class is a free demo. Some may teach partly online.

Why do command words matter so much in IGCSE?

Because the mark scheme rewards answers that do exactly what the command word asks. "Describe" wants what happens, "explain" wants why, and "suggest" wants a reasoned idea applied to something unfamiliar. Students who know the content often lose marks by answering the wrong instruction, so tutors should practise this every session.

What is the difference between Core and Extended in Cambridge maths?

Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3 and can reach grade C at most. Extended candidates sit Papers 2 and 4 and can reach A*. Schools usually decide the tier during Grade 10 from test evidence, so a student near the boundary benefits most from help in Grade 9.

Can a GSEB or CBSE tutor teach IGCSE?

Some can, since much content overlaps. But IGCSE has its own papers, command words, calculator rules and, in Cambridge science, a practical component. Ask the tutor to describe your child's papers by code and to mark a past-paper answer in the demo; it quickly shows whether they know the course.

My child is switching from Gujarati-medium GSEB to IGCSE. What helps?

Most of the maths and science carries over. The new parts are English scientific vocabulary, command words and papers marked to a published scheme. A tutor who builds vocabulary alongside each topic, explains terms clearly at first and moves quickly to past-paper practice usually makes the transition much easier.

Is online IGCSE tuition common in Ahmedabad?

Yes, often alongside home sessions. Online lessons open up specialists for a particular code from across India, while a nearby tutor handles regular work. Families on the Bopal and Shela side, which has no metro, and east-bank families wanting a west-bank specialist often use this mix. The tutor must see working live.

How much does an IGCSE tutor cost in Ahmedabad?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. The subject, tier, time to the exam and the tutor's journey move the fee.
