Home Tuition in South Delhi: A Colony-by-Colony Guide
In South Delhi most families live in builder floors on plotted blocks or in DDA and cooperative flats behind a pocket gate, so a home tutor's visit usually starts with a guard's register or a floor bell. Four metro lines cross this part of the city, Yellow, Violet, Magenta and Pink, and a tutor who comes by metro and finishes by e-rickshaw can skip the evening rush on the Ring Road and the Outer Ring Road.
This guide covers five zones: GK, Defence Colony and Lajpat Nagar; Saket, Malviya Nagar and Hauz Khas; Kalkaji, CR Park and Sarita Vihar; Vasant Kunj, Vasant Vihar and Palam; and Lodhi Colony, Jangpura and Nizamuddin. It shows which station serves which colony, the gate and doorstep routine in each, and when to time a class.
How do the five zones fit together?
Defence Colony was established in 1960 to resettle military officers displaced by Partition, on land formerly of Kotla Mubarakpur village. Greater Kailash was developed from the early 1960s on agricultural land from Zamrudpur and Devli villages, acquired by the government in 1955. Chittaranjan Park was set up in the early 1960s as the East Pakistan Displaced Persons (EPDP) Colony and renamed in the 1980s.

GK, Defence Colony and Lajpat Nagar
The Violet Line's first section, Central Secretariat to Sarita Vihar, opened on 3 October 2010 and runs through Jangpura, Lajpat Nagar, Moolchand, Kailash Colony and Nehru Place. Lajpat Nagar is an interchange: Violet Line platforms from that day, Pink Line platforms from 6 August 2018. Greater Kailash station on the Magenta Line opened on 29 May 2018.
- Greater Kailash 1 and Greater Kailash 2: lettered blocks with RWA guards. Floors often have separate entrances, so share the floor number with the block.
- Defence Colony and South Extension: Defence Colony's five blocks, A to E, have guards who keep registers. If the tutor drives along the Ring Road, morning and weekend slots are easiest.
- Lajpat Nagar: Parts I, II and III lie north of the Ring Road and Part IV south of it. Near the Central Market, a tutor who comes by metro keeps better time in the evening.
- East of Kailash and Pamposh Enclave: private floors beside gated DDA and cooperative pockets. Roads near Nehru Place are busiest on weekday evenings, so set the slot around them.
Saket, Malviya Nagar and Hauz Khas
The Yellow Line section from Qutab Minar to Central Secretariat opened on 3 September 2010, with stations at Green Park, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar and Saket. Chhatarpur station opened on 26 August 2010 and is the only Delhi Metro station built entirely of steel. Hauz Khas, the deepest station in the network, became a Yellow and Magenta interchange on 29 May 2018, and the Magenta Line section including Panchsheel Park and Chirag Delhi opened in May 2018.
- Saket: developed by the DDA on land of the Khirki, Said-ul-Ajaib and Hauz Rani villages, with row houses, DDA flats and apartments in lettered blocks. Weekday or morning slots avoid the weekend-evening rush near the district centre.
- Malviya Nagar, Shivalik and Sarvodaya Enclave: houses and builder floors with RWA guards. Malviya Nagar station and an e-rickshaw is the usual route.
- Hauz Khas, Green Park and Safdarjung Enclave: most floors have their own entrance. Hauz Khas Village fills up in the evenings and at weekends, so a tutor who drives should avoid its approach roads then.
- Sheikh Sarai and Panchsheel Park: Chirag Delhi and Panchsheel Park stations serve them. The Outer Ring Road runs past both, so an evening class holds better with a tutor who comes by metro.
- Sainik Farm, Chhatarpur and Mehrauli: large houses in Sainik Farm, builder floors in the other two. Share the exact lane and a landmark, and prefer weekdays to festival days near the Chhatarpur temple complex.
Kalkaji, CR Park and Sarita Vihar
Kalkaji Mandir is an interchange: Violet Line from 3 October 2010 and Magenta Line from 25 December 2017, when the first Magenta Line section, Botanical Garden to Kalkaji Mandir, opened along with Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh station. Sarita Vihar station, in Pocket C of the colony, opened with the first Violet Line section, and the line was extended from Sarita Vihar to Badarpur Border on 14 January 2011.
- Kalkaji and Nehru Enclave: DDA pockets keep gate registers, so pass on the tutor's name in advance. The temple area gets very crowded at festivals, so plan around those days or move online.
- Chittaranjan Park: Greater Kailash and Nehru Enclave stations serve the western and southern blocks. During Durga Puja many families move classes to mornings or online for the week.
- Alaknanda: apartment complexes with their own gates and registers, and no station inside; tutors finish by auto from Nehru Enclave, Greater Kailash or Govindpuri.
- Sarita Vihar and Jasola Vihar: Sarita Vihar was built on land of Madanpur Khadar village and first planned for the 1982 Asian Games. Jasola Vihar sits beside an office district, so a class after the office rush on Mathura Road works well.
Vasant Kunj, Vasant Vihar and Palam
The Magenta Line section from Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden opened on 29 May 2018, with stations including Dabri Mor - Janakpuri South, Dashrathpuri, Palam, Vasant Vihar, Munirka and R K Puram.
- Vasant Kunj: lettered sectors subdivided into pockets and blocks, so share all three with the flat number. Vasant Vihar is the nearest station, and many tutors come by car or scooter.
- Vasant Vihar: six blocks, A to F, with main streets such as Munirka Marg and Vasant Marg, and more than 50 diplomatic missions. Tell the house staff when a tutor is due.
- Munirka and R K Puram: the notification for Munirka's urbanisation was issued in March 1954. R K Puram was developed by the Central Public Works Department from the late 1950s, mainly for central government officers.
- Palam, Mahavir Enclave, Dabri and Sagarpur: Palam lies between Delhi Cantonment, Dwarka and Janakpuri. Homes are mostly houses and builder floors, so the tutor comes to the door; fix the class before or after the busiest market hours.
Lodhi Colony, Jangpura and Nizamuddin
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Jangpura stations opened on 3 October 2010 with the Violet Line's first section. The Pink Line was extended from Lajpat Nagar to Shree Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar on 31 December 2018, bringing it to Hazrat Nizamuddin.
- Lodhi Colony: built in the 1940s to house government employees and governed by the New Delhi Municipal Council, with murals across its walls. Blocks are open, so the tutor goes straight to the flat.
- Jangpura: grew in 1950 to 1951 with many Sikh and Hindu migrants from the Punjab province of Pakistan. A tutor on the Violet Line walks from Jangpura station and misses the evening traffic on Mathura Road.
- Nizamuddin East and Nizamuddin West: Nizamuddin East has 286 houses and 32 public parks and lies on Mathura Road. In Nizamuddin West, share the exact block and a gate landmark before the first visit.
When should a weekday class start?
- Soon after school. The Ring Road, the Outer Ring Road and Mathura Road are busiest at office hours, so an early slot is the most likely to start on time.
- After the rush, near a station. Close to Lajpat Nagar, Hauz Khas or Kalkaji Mandir, a tutor who comes by metro can manage a later evening slot.
- Weekend mornings for longer sessions.

Frequently asked questions
Which metro station is nearest to Greater Kailash?
Greater Kailash station on the Magenta Line, open since 29 May 2018, serves GK-1 and GK-2 directly, and Kailash Colony and Nehru Place on the Violet Line are the other usual stops. From any of them, a short walk or an e-rickshaw ride covers the last stretch to the block.
Do tutors need a gate pass in South Delhi colonies?
Often, yes. Many plotted colonies have RWA guards at block entrances, and DDA and cooperative pockets in Kalkaji, Alaknanda, Sarita Vihar and Vasant Kunj keep visitor registers. Give the guard the tutor's name before the free demo class, and share the floor number, since many buildings have separate entrances for each floor.
When is the easiest time for a home class in South Delhi?
A slot soon after school, before the office rush on the Ring Road, the Outer Ring Road and Mathura Road, is the most reliable. Weekend mornings suit longer sessions. Near Lajpat Nagar, Hauz Khas or Kalkaji Mandir, a tutor who comes by metro can also manage an evening slot after the rush.
Is Vasant Kunj easy for tutors to reach?
There is no metro station inside the colony; Vasant Vihar on the Magenta Line is the nearest, followed by an auto. Many tutors come by car or scooter instead. Share your sector, pocket and flat number, and pick a late-afternoon or weekend slot to avoid the office-hours rush.
How much does home tuition cost in South Delhi?
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, which you see before the free demo.
